Submitter comment: I'd like to submit this '[s]tudy of defensive behavior of a venomous snake as a new approach to understand snakebite' not for it's topic (worth studying!) but for it's insane methodology, which... well, I'll just let the researcher speak for himself:

[Q: Why did you decide to do this experiment?

A: Snake behavior has been generally neglected as a field of research, especially in Brazil. And most studies don’t examine what factors make them want to bite. If you study malaria, you can research the parasite that causes the disease—but if you don’t study the mosquito that carries it, you will never solve the problem. Up until now, the popular wisdom was that the jararaca would only attack if you touched it or stepped on it. But that was not what we found.

Q: Why did you need to be the victim?

A: The best way to do this research is to put snakes and a human together. In this case, the human was me. We put the snakes inside a ring on the floor of our lab until they got used to it, then I stepped in wearing special protective boots. I stepped close to the snake and also lightly on top of it. I didn’t put my whole weight on my foot, so I did not hurt the snakes. I tested 116 animals and stepped 30 times on every animal, totaling 40,480 steps.]

Expanding on this, that post i reblogged just now made me think about how piracy is like a library for video games. The library buys and stocks books (person buys and cracks the game), patrons come in and borrow them (torrents the games), doesn't matter why they do it (broke, don't like spending money on books, want to test the waters of a series before committing to spending, etc) no one says libraries are killing book sales, they're just making it so people who wouldn't otherwise have books get to read. Much like torrenting gets people to play games they otherwise wouldn't. Maybe they can't afford every game they buy, maybe they end up not liking it, maybe they do and end up buying it to support the dev. Either way it's just more people playing games.

And that ended with me thinking it would be sick to have communal gaming computers. It might be hard with some games, but with account-dependent save files or arcade games it could be possible. Not everyone can afford to buy beefy PCs, much like not everyone can afford to buy every book they want to read.

the difference between yugioh and magic the gathering (as someone who plays neither) is that a yugioh card says like "if you own a Blorbionicus the King of Red Eyes in your pendulum summon zone (but NOT your left pendulum summon zone) you can special summon (NOT ritual or zexal or pendulum summon) sixteen cards named Blorbimini (excluding Maid Blorbimini) to any zone EXCEPT the super double defense zone" and no one can explain this to me but meanwhile a magic the gathering card says "flying. after the end of your turn draw a card" and people are like oh those fools bc the action only goes on the stack after the end of your turn and because of the use of 'your' instead of 'the owner's' and because mercury is in gatorade, technically it only resolves during the opponents third upkeep when explicitly you cant draw cards or else a sniper will shoot you

my honest to God answer in my defense is that I am fascinated to an unhealthy degree with glitches, system failures, weird rules interactions, etc and so spend unreasonable amounts of time in threads dedicated to discussing weird rules in games i don't play. did you know in the tabletop rpg pathfinder no one can see the moon

@loth-catgirl it's honestly fairly simple. perception checks gain bonuses based off the size of the thing you're trying to see, but gain penalties based on how far away it is. the math lines up such that the very large size of the moon in No way compensates for the negative-over-a-hundred-million penalty imposed by the moon being really far away. this also goes for the sun (larger, but even further away) and, obviously, all stars. no one has ever seen any celestial body
