Deltarune is waiting
On Grace’s relationship with DuBois and Shapiro in Project Hail Mary
***book spoilers ahead***
I want to do a quick dive into the infamous scene between Grace, DuBois, and Shapiro in chapter 17 (pp. 283–285 in my copy) because an idea occurred to me and I can’t rest until I dig into it. This is the scene in which DuBois informs Grace of the sexual nature of his relationship with Shapiro.
Something about the conversation didn’t sit quite right for me. Upon reflection, I wanted to take a step back from (or perhaps, as it happens, a step further into) my aroace reading of Grace and get to the bottom of what Weir’s intention was in writing it. While I do believe that the aroace reading is strongly supported by the text, I don’t believe that it was specifically intended, which brings us to these points:
I don't even think I "ship" grace/rocky I just know that there's no way in hell that two curious people who want to learn about the biology of alien species spent four (4) years cooped up alone together on a spaceship and didn't at least once--

The current state of AO3 relationship tags for the “Project Hail Mary” tag is fucking crazy.
The top option is a platonic relationship.
The second option is a gay crossover ship.
The fifth option is a ship between two alien monogendered rocks that’s mentioned in passing with a character we never meet.
The sixth option is also a crossover situation, but it’s not a ship and instead a twin brother AU.
Said sixth option is ABOVE an actual canonical relationship (and its romantic interpretation).
The tenth option is a ship THATS FROM A WHOLE ASS DIFFERENT MOVIE!!!

rare moment of reddit being helpful. found it there and
thought its interes- wait
EDIT:
dear god
we are going insane
okay, I am a full believer that Ryland Grace is aroace, but I had a thought.
when Grace and Rocky make it to Erid and Grace meets Adrian, Adrian realizes just how obsessed and codependent Rocky and Grace are. Then Adrian has to sit down with Rocky to talk about his odd tastes, because Rocky being incredibly normal (sarcastic) about Grace would be our equivalent of finding out your husband is a monsterfucker, but he actually has access to said monster and is now constantly talking about it.
Adrian surname The Eridian deserves a goddamn break.
A Modest List of all the Evidence that Krusielle (be it the romantic or platonic version) will be Canon, Pre-Chapter 5 Edition
[OP's notes: Revised the whole thing to make it less about arguing that Kris and the girls have romantic feelings for each other and more about how all three care about each other very deeply, want to be together, and deserve to be together.]
Let's get to the point. What follows is a comprehensive list that discusses every single moment that connects to the greatest polycule in all of fiction. A list that will demonstrate to y'all that, even if Kris doesn't feel about Noelle and Susie the same way those two girls feel about each other, even if Kris's relationship with both of them is nonromantic, all three of them care about each other very deeply and want to be a part of each other's lives. And show you just how big a deal their relationship is to the narrative of Deltarune as a whole!
Let's begin! Shall we?
Exhibit A) The implications of the WeatherKaard polycule
Even though it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Krusielle at first glance, this scene was an ABSOLUTE JOY to Krusielle fans everywhere because it establishes something CRITICAL to Krusielle potentially becoming canon: that Toby Fox is aware of polycules and polyamorous relationships!!! And even though Rouxls' polycule didn't pan out, it's still a huge deal given the fact that this polyamory is part of the main quest!!!!
Read my lips: PLOT. ESSENTIAL. POLYAMORY.
Just think about it! Why would Toby Goddman Fox go out of his way to make sure that we do not miss out on Rouxls forming a polycule with the Weather Duo? Not to mention that even though Elnina and Lanina break up with them, they still end up getting with Starwalker.
And what also makes this that much bigger of a deal for Kris's potential polyamory is that this happens IN THE DARK WORLD THAT KRIS MADE!
And seeing how Dark Worlds reflect the people who created them, AND seeing how there's also plenty of love-related motifs in Kris's dark world... you see what I mean?
But you wanna know something, turns out Weatherkaard isn't the only doomed poly in Deltarune. Which brings me to...
Exhibit B) The doomed throuple of Mike, Tenna, and Spamton.
Yeah, you heard that right. Turns out Spamton and Tenna didn't just experience doomed yaoi, they also experienced doomed poly. Now, of course, there's been plenty said about Spamton and Tenna's relationship, but y'all can't forget that Spamton also had a thing with Mike as well. If you look at the image at the top right, it's clear he misses him just as much as Tenna, despite trying to convince himself that he's grown past them both. And on TOP of that, the stuff that's connected to him emphasizes motifs of love, romance, marriage, and, you guessed it, DIVORCE!!!!!!!!!
As I said before. SWEET DELICIOUS DOOMED POLY! And I HIGHLY recommend checking out the Divorce theory by @vikas-room if you wanna get more insight into all of that Mike X Tenna X Spamton angst. And you know something else, turns out polyamory is actually pretty normal in the world of Deltarune.
Exhibit C) The Prevalence of Polyamory in Deltarune
A lot has changed in the years since Chapter 1's release back in 2018, and, not surprisingly, so has our understanding and awareness of poly rep and poly relationships. One peculiar reason I used to doubt that Krusielle would be canon was that I believed Toby wouldn't be aware of polyamorous relationships or poly rep when he finished writing Deltarune. So when I see that polyamory has been present in Deltarune's narrative as far back as CHAPTER 2, I cannot help but think that polyamory is gonna manifest itself in a HUGE way down the line (hint: Krusielle).
Take this scene with the Pink Addison for example.
When they see Kris, Susie, and Ralsei together, they assume that they're a throuple and give offer them marriage shoes, implying that poly relationships are very much prevalent in Deltarune's narrative.
And if having a side character bring it up ain't enough for you, HOW ABOUT A MAIN CHARACTER (i.e. Ralsei)
Well, look at that! Not only does Ralsei hope that the one they're addressing considers them a valentine, but ALSO ASSUMES THAT THEY ALREADY HAVE MULTIPLE VALENTINES (I.E. MORE THAN ONE PERSON THEY HAVE THE HOTS FOR)!!!!!
We'll come back to Ralsei later, but for now let's move on to Kris. After all, we can't have Krusielle if Kris doesn't desire to be in a relationship with Noelle and Susie. And there just so happens to be CONCLUSIVE evidence that they do.
Exhibit D) Kris's yearning for a committed relationship
In Chapter 2, you will encounter a Darkner called a Poppup, and the neat thing about them is that the ads the characters click on reflect a defining aspect of their personalities. And one of the ads Kris clicks on is this.
Now I'm sure yall are familiar with the phrase "singles in your area" as its a phrase universally associated with romance and dating, particularly online dating. In fact, Noelle even clicks on a similar ad for "hot female santas." So, seeing how Kris clicks on a dating site for humans getting with monsters, it makes a very compelling case that Kris wants to be in a relationship. This doesn't conclusively prove that Kris is not aroace, but if you ask me, whether Kris experiences doesn't matter at all to whether Krusielle will be canon. What ultimately matters is that Kris yearns for companionship, for something deep and intimate with some person, or perhaps, some people!
Also, pay attention to how "unconsciously" is being used here (which is also what happens with the ads about turning spaghetti into knives and demon-summoning). The fact that Kris clicked on it without thinking proves that this isn't something we, the player, are imposing on Kris, BUT SOMETHING SO INTEGRAL TO THEIR IDENTITY THAT THEY WANT IT EVEN WHEN NOT THINKING ABOUT IT!
So yeah, Krusielle is something Kris very much wants deep down, and interestingly enough, SO DOES RALSEI!
Exhibit E) Krusielle's #2 Fan: Ralsei
Now, let's come back to everyone's favourite cinnamon roll. When Ralsei asks who Kris is going with to the festival if it isn't Susie, and Kris answers with Noelle, Ralsei will say this:
Oh, and you gotta love how he winks at Kris when he says that they will have a "lot of fun" with Susie and Noelle.
Additionally, if you're doing the Snowgrave Run, Ralsei's response will be this:
It's rather interesting that Ralsei strongly encourages Kris to bring Susie along should they choose to take Noelle, as he's very much aware of Noelle and Susie's feelings for each other.
And for the record, Susie has made it VERY CLEAR she wants to take Noelle AND Kris to the festival!
Guess Ralsei also thinks that "Three art Stronger than Two" just like Rouxls! And would you know SO DOES SUSIE AND NOELLE! Which brings us to...
Exhibit F) The Greatest Suselle (and Krusielle?!) scene in all of Deltarune
Now y'all remember this scene for that sweet sweet Suselle, but even though the focus is on Noelle and Susie's relationship, you'll find evidence they may also want to have something with Kris! Even though Susie and Noelle tell Kris to skidaddle, they later wish Kris were still with them.
It's a bigger deal in Noelle's case because if you remember, she was a bit taken aback when Susie told her she was bringing Kris along at the church as if she preferred to just be with her, and how SHE WENT OUT OF HER WAY TO DOWNPLAY HER CLOSENESS TO KRIS, EVEN GOING SO FAR AS TO CALL THE FERRIS WHEEL RIDE "FORCED" WHEN SHE SUSIE ASKED ABOUT IT IN DESS'S BEDROOM! And yet, despite that, she still couldn't help but wish that her childhood friend was still with her and her future girlfriend, showing that her bond with her is much deeper than she thinks!!!
You might argue this scene doesn't mean anything because they both eventually get comfortable enough without Kris and don't invite them back, but I disagree. Like, if I go somewhere and wish that a close friend of mine was with me, but then I eventually have a good time without them so that they're not on my mind anymore, that doesn't mean that I no longer don't want them to be a part of the experience, yknow? And besides, may I remind you they spend most of their time in Dess's room TALKING ABOUT KRIS. Talking about how they're doing and what they want to do with them!
And since we're on the subject of Susie and Noelle...
Exhibit G) Indirect K(r)isess
And even though Kris may not share as many intimate moments with Noelle and Susie as the girls do with each other, that's not to say there aren't any intimate moments between Kris and both girls! And if you look at the following scenes. One might even say that Kris has gotten a bit of a head start!
Well would you look at that! INDIRECT KISSING BETWEEN KRIS AND NOELLE/SUSIE! And you'll note that some of these items listed above are from items that came about in Chapter 3 and 4 and can't be used on Noelle because she wasn't in the Dark World in either chapter. In other words, this came about as the result of datamining, which demonstrates that there are going to be quite a few sweet moments between Kris and both girls.
Exhibit H) WAS THAT A BLUSH?!?!?!?
What's that? You think Kris ain't gonna be an item with the girls because they don't get all blushy blushy like Noelle and Susie do with each other? Well, about that...
While Susie and Noelle are in December's room Susie will bring up the photo of Noelle and Kris on the Ferris Wheel ride, and Noelle (and Kris's) reaction is... noteworthy to say the least.
Yes, you're seeing this right, people. Actual blushing between NOELLE AND KRIS!
Now, to be fair, blushing doesn't always indicate romantic attraction. May I remind you that Noelle also has a moment where she blushes when FRIGGIN' BERDLY calls her a friend.
And maybe Noelle was blushing because she was thinking about her Ferris Wheel ride with Susie back in Chapter 2. I mean, it's not like this isn't the only time she blushes about something related to Kris. And it's not like there is a moment where she blushes over something like, idk, Kris's flirting abilities, right???????
Ooooooohhhhh...
Well, if there's any evidence out there that the romantic version of Krusielle will become canon, this most certainly is it. And of course, the reason why her blushing about Kris's flirting skills is much more meaningful than her blushing about Berdly calling her a friend is because, unlike with Berdly, she has a very deep and intimate emotional bond/connection with Kris and had a very close relationship with them. And on top of that she's made it pretty clear that she deerly misses Kris (pun intended) and wants to be at the very least, just as close as they used to be.
And on top of that, what makes this scene that much more noteworthy is that this is the first time that her OVERWORLD sprite has made a blushing face about someone OTHER THAN SUSIE (as I may point out, there are plenty of moments in which she makes this same blushing sprite with Susie)!!!
And it just so happens to be about a person whom, as I said, she has a deep, intimate, and emotional bond with and someone that she badly wants to be close to again.
I gotta say, even as Tumblr's (Queer)Platonic Krusielle Truther-In-Chief, it does make a very compelling case that the romantic version will become canon (though if you have a critique or a response, I'm happy to hear it.)
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know that big scene between Kris and Noelle in Chapter 2, which many people point to as evidence that Kris and Noelle just want to stay friends (especially since it's where Snowgrave kicks off). Well, if you look at the finer details, you'll realize that's not quite the case. Which brings us to this scene from Snowgrave...
If you pay close attention to the scene on the right, after she says there's not enough money, but she thinks to herself that it was nice that Kris wanted to get her one. And not only that, she feels that WHILE BLUSHING! BLUSHING!!!!!!!!!!
JUST LIKE SHE DID WHEN SHE THOUGHT OF SUSIE BUYING HER A RING IN THE SCENE ON THE LEFT!
And even though this happens during the Weird Route, we, the player, are not forcing Noelle to feel this way! This is something that she feels spontaneously, of her own accord! It makes for compelling evidence that even if her feelings for Kris aren't as strong as they are for Susie, she still has feelings, nonetheless. Feelings that she's unsure if Kris would reciprocate, or thinks that she should act upon.
And even if Noelle isn't romantically invested in Kris, it does make a good case that she wants not just her friendship back, but something perhaps deeper and more intimate (i.e. a QPR relationship).
Also, you can make the case that her being uncomfortable about Kris and them "something else" is more about her worst fears being confirmed that Kris doesn't care about her anymore as may I point out, when Kris says "We're something else" they saying we're something OTHER THAN FRIENDS AND OTHER THAN DATING. So it doesn't quite conclusively prove that she would be averse to having something other than a (very close and deep) friendship with Kris.
And would you know it, there are moments of blushing between Kris and Susie (the left scene happens when Susie asks Kris about the knife, and the right scene happens when Kris calls Susie weird when she brags about eating their apple shampoo)
So yeah, I guess the girls might actually want to be together with Kris after all! And funnily enough, SO DOES THE GAME ITSELF!
Exhibit I) Krusielle's #1 Fan: THE NARRATIVE OF DELATRUNE ITSELF!!!!!!!
Even as far back as chapter 1, we've seen Deltarune make a big deal out of Kris, Susie, and Noelle being together. When you ask Noelle to work with her in the group project, she'll say she'll ask Alphys if she can work in a group of three.
It may not seem like much on its own, but it does become rather significant as it reinforces how the narrative makes a big deal out of Kris, Susie, and Noelle being together. And we also see this later in the following Chapter!
It's rather interesting how, when Queen talks about the Lightners, it shows Kris, Susie, and Noelle! And seeing how we've only ever seen the ONLY three of them (that is to say, without Ralsei and Berdly) as a trio once in the Light World, and never in the Dark World, it's evident that these three are going to end up together much later in the coming chapters!
Hell, EVEN GASTER HIMSELF MAKES A BIG ASS DEAL ABOUT KRIS, NOELLE, AND SUSIE BEING TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!
You know how you can get specific responses if you type in specific names when making the Vessel? Well, if you use Kris, Noelle, or Susie's name as the Vessel's creator, this is the response you will get! And this happens with ONLY THOSE THREE! As in no other lightner or darkner will get this response. ONLY KRIS. ONLY SUSIE. AND ONLY NOELLE.
So if Gaster's eager to maintain the Krusielle agenda, why can't I?
__________________________
And there you have it! The end of my list of all the Krusielle evidence I can find (until my next revision lol). Now, while we can't be certain if Susie and Noelle share romantic feelings with Kris, what I've shown is that it kinda doesn't matter!
The only thing that matters to this Krusielle stan is that everything I've seen suggests that, in the end, Kris will mean to Susie and Noelle just as much as those two sapphics matter to each other!
Will it end in a triple marriage? A queerplatonic throuple? Or friendship that's deeper than most marriages?! Who knows!
But I do know this for certain: Krusielle won't just possibly be canon, IT WILL BE CANON! And one might even say it already is.
And if you'd like to contribute to the list with whatever potential evidence of a Krusielle endgame, feel free to!
Grace's bedroom on Erid – a messy GUI placeholder background for the Gracerocky/Eridian dating sim game we're currently working on (and also to test out my Eridian pattern brushes yayyy)
It's commonly accepted in this fandom that humans have extremely fragile bodies in comparison to Eridians, but I think that's actually an oversimplification.
Because while Eridians are incredibly strong and tough on the outside, on the inside they are actually quite fragile:
They have no immune system, so anything that makes it past their enclosed carapace and internal heating will pretty much kill them
They have no natural defenses to radiation of any kind
In general they have very little organic matter so anything that targets their cells directly is quickly lethal
They are partially cold-blooded and live at a very narrow temperature range (about 20 degrees C)
They rely almost entirely on one, highly developed sense and are helpless if deafened (can't even remember the layout of a room)
They are completely helpless while asleep and can't control when that happens
They will forcibly become dormant after eating AND when badly hurt enough (their equivalent of going into shock)
They require more energy to function than humans do, and have very little organic matter to burn in the case of starvation
In contrast, humans:
Have an aggressive immune system and internal mechanisms for dealing with cell damage
Have adrenaline which allows them to temporarily ignore injuries and perform abnormal feats of strength
Are persistence hunters built for economy of movement and capable of extreme levels of endurance
Exist in a very wide range of habitats and on a diverse diet
Are very hardy in general, able to survive massive injuries, lack of sleep, prolonged starvation, and intense environmental conditions if given proper care
The quintessential example of this dichotomy between strength and endurance is the Going Fishing incident in the book: Rocky is able to survive and move in G forces that are killing Grace and to physically wrestle off the chair crushing him, but he collapses from his injuries almost immediately after. Despite being injured himself Grace then carries his 400lb friend up a ladder, is badly burned returning him to his atmosphere, and then proceeds to get some basic medical care, hype himself up on pain meds and keep working (albeit rather badly, lol) while Rocky forcibly sleeps.
The TL:DR is that Eridians are harder to damage, but easier to kill. They're like an rpg character with high armor and low health. I think Rocky would consider Grace to be very delicate at first, only to be blown away by how deceptively tough his friend can be.
She’d rather die than be separated from her friends. I trust you Susie deltarune. Hopecore
