I’ve always wanted to do a… reference meme(?) even though Cyra absolutely DESPISES the idea of being with trainers but sometimes it’s fun to have a breather from your headcanon, y’know?

That and I’ve also always wondered how Cyra would look with the actual eyes raichu have… it feels kinda weird, hell I might even say it feels cursed looking at her like this after drawing her with my style of eyes for so long lol

I don’t really like how I drew Cyra in the top left corner cause odd angle and I tried fixing it but it just looks off but ah well… Concept art!

I couldn’t help but wonder what Cyra would look like mega evolved now that Nintendo has given raichu two megas and some folks are tweaking their raichu ocs cause of it so I thought I’d join. I also couldn’t help but give her my fanmade Z form I’ve designed too and honestly with that one, I don’t wanna fuck with her lol.

Designing these was a challenge cause I wanted to still keep Cyra looking like herself as my oc. Her eyes were probably one of the most difficult things to design since the megas have different eye colours for their corresponding forms and Cyra has hazel-green eyes so I guess she just loses them for this. I also wasn’t a fan of the official Y’s ears and legs so I kind of tweaked them to my own liking.

Not anything fantastic for art wise. I just wanted to get the idea out. I also referenced the pose for her Z form from the very first drawing of her ever cause I thought it’d be a nice call back and technically a “redraw”. Fits how fierce she looks in that drawing too!

Comet is an altaria that’s on her own accord. Like Cinder, she carries everyone around when needed and acts as an aerial scouter. However she has perks thanks to her soft cloud-like wings as she can blend in the azure easily; keeping a lookout for her peers and despite of her delicate vibe, she makes a great urgent ambusher in the daytime. Her other niche role is being supportive after matchups by healing her friends from status ailments by using her gentle, chiming voice that works as Heal Bell. Despite not knowing the actual attack: Sing, she is considered quite entertaining and would have nights where she’ll sing to her friends for their own enjoyment. Her and her hoppip friend, Celine, work as healers for the alliance; although the only downside for Comet sometimes is having to chase that silly living dandelion down during windy days.

Actually holy shit tho. I don’t often make that many creative-original designs or that impressed with my art style, but geez! Already looking back at my mega Z’chu and it actually goes hard despite of me rushing 🔥

So I’ve decided to turn that mega raichu X redesign into my own interpretation of a 3rd mega for raichu!

Behold, My Mega Raichu Z!

The TRUE raichu in my eyes!

Biology:

“Upon mega evolution, Raichu has adapted to handle and increase its electricity to levels it could not control before. It’s tails have split into hand-like appendages to help circulate electricity around it’s body better, amplifying it’s physical attacks, and to be able to run on all fours while dishing out some staggering Thunder Punches. It can sit on one of its tails while holding or pummeling foes with its other hand, paws and muscular legs. Besides becoming literally “handsy”, it’s tails now also act as electrical vessels; allowing it to absorb electricity from both the atomsphere and the ground without overwhelming itself. It’s speculated that it’s improved electrical organs, including its cheek sacs may allow it to handle almost a million megavolts.”

It incorporates a couple features from the mega X and Y design (the standing up fur as an obvious example). Like my “X redesign”, I wanted to lean more to the idea of reinventing Gorochu with the darker coat colour and more spikes on the ears to subtly pay tribute to Gorochu’s horns. I really liked the hand-tails of my version of raichu X so I kept them for this guy too as well as maintaining the idea of being part Fighting! Raichu having this added type makes sense with reference to boxing kangaroos and being inspired by kangaroo rats and having a fair share of fighting-type moves in its movepool. This guy would have Scrappy as his ability which would be absolutely diabolical with the 3 priority moves it learns now. Plus Reversal and paired with the all-powerful Volt Tackles’ recoils, he’d be scary to face if you don’t move first lol. 😜

Ugh even og Raichu fans preaching about it finally getting mega evolution or saying “they’ve revived Gorochu!” kinda irks me. Those things aren’t even close to Gorochu lmao.

For one, it goes against the general design philosophy for mega evolutions not regaining physical characteristics exclusive to their pre-volutions (not counting the mega they’re evolving from) in terms of design. The exception to this is Mega Ampharos who gains wool again which makes sense cause it is a sheep, but it’s played differently and doesn’t entirely look like a hybrid of all its pre-evolutions and to go along with it, it adds to the reference of Chinese dragons as it gains the dragon-type. Mega Dragonite also goes against this rule too and while I’m not inherently the biggest fan of the design like many, it still overall looks like an upgraded Dragonite with a couple exaggerated features from Dragonair with the weird “head wings” which I think makes Mega Dragonite represent a “Guardian Angel” with it’s benevolent personality and pokédex enteries regarding to saving drowning people. I can’t explain the random the return of the orb on it’s tail, but still the design itself is not enough for people to jokingly refer it to or surprisingly mistaken it as “Mega Dragonair”.

Mega Raichu on the otherhand had to be BOTH representing Pikachu rather than just having one of them designed like that for the fans. It is instead a rather clever illusion and money tactic. You think Raichu got respected, but really it’s been rebranded, technically redesigned in favour of merchandising rather than a full on powerup. They partially exist for promoting the DLC! They want Mega Pikachu so badly but they can’t cause only fully evolved pokémon can mega evolve so ofc they’re gonna implement it into poor Raichu’s mega(s). He cannot escape the mascot’s shadow either way.

Just take away some details that make it Raichu and essentially you have…

Mega Pikachu.

Most people are going to use Raichu now but they’re gonna mega evolve it right away into those Pikachu abominations that honours more of the mascot than the actual pokémon itself. Their designs erase what made Raichu cool. X with the tails and colours and Y with the legs and technically the ears. You can argue that “X looks the most raichu-like” and I could agree on that to a mere 30%. They didn’t exactly build on the fundamentals that makes evolution more superior, even if it’s a temporary transformation. Why replace the whip-like tail with the same flat lightning bolt that pikachu has—except there’s two now—instead of further building on the concept? It’s like a real-life evolution when it comes to growth; why revert back to something? Raichu’s dex enteries do suggest that it puts it’s tail in the ground to discharge excess electricity which might explain the tails but did they have to go with that Pikachu lightning design and why change it’s fur back to yellow and the cheekpouches back to red again when the orange and yellow perfectly complimented it and represents the increase of electricity in an evolutionary perspective?

And as for Y… Sure you can say “the tail practically stayed the same” but it takes more inspiration from Pikachu more imo. Why replace the big powerful jerboa legs for the small Pikachu-like ones? Why are the ears just Pikachu again but with added Raichu ears that look like it’s merging in from out of the blue (hence the detached-appearance) and why does the end of it’s tail look more like Pikachu’s tail being moulded out of it? Literally Mega X by definition is a hybrid between the two mice while Mega Y looks to represent a Pikachu in the MIDDLE of evolving into Raichu. But what truly makes a mega evolution is by making it look like the fully-evolved pokémon is becoming more powerful! Building on the many existenting fundamentals that makes the fully-evolved pokémon and very little to small from their predecessors!

It’s almost like they’re rebranding Raichu AGAIN for the new game and this isn’t the first time for Raichu either. I’ll count it for Gen 7’s Alolan Raichu because it’s a regional variant. You can only get it in the Alolan region (or events and exceptions), not for any normal reason like most regional variants. In gen 8 and 9 besides as a reward, the only way to obtain Alolan Raichu is to transfer it from SM/USUM. Gen 7 made Raichu popular by associating its so new cute surfing-tail form and unique second typing in that region to an illusionary attempt to dissociate it from Pikachu subtly. This didn’t help or make the regular form better; it’s another distraction from it which is why it got a cameo in the new Pokémon Snap and even in the Super Smash Bros series because people favoured it’s design and aesthetic over the original which is half-assed because it’s based off of a special psychic, surfing Pikachu from the old anime and it’s Pokédex entries about it smelling sweet and eating pancakes is so stupid and doesn’t explain–erm well, ELABORATE the origin or theory of why it really gains psychic powers. Regular Raichu never had a cameo in Smash like the little brother Pichu did, not even a trophy but they gave the Alolan cousin one. They want people to like Alolan Raichu more because it’s harder to obtain in a sense, looks cuter and cooler in design and is part psychic which is a unique typing paired with electric.

Gamefreak probably had to think long and hard with this decision to give Raichu a mega because why do they want to make the fully evolved form of their beloved mascot so powerful? Even with the light ball in existence. They don’t want to risk it completely so let’s just make both designs Pikachu-like so it gains more appeal. The fact Ultra Moon inexplicitly points that out-

Hence why the two megas look the way they are. Rebranding and defacing regular Raichu at it’s finest!

The idea is for casual people or former fans see mega Raichu, they’re gonna say it’s Pikachu who has gotten stronger! When those same people see regular Raichu, you’d think they would say the same thing but its more likely to range to either liking it, not liking it, maybe something about Alolan Raichu or even forgotten.

So I tried fixing Mega Raichu X!

It’s similar to the official design but with very simple and obvious changes. I wanted to lean more to the idea of reinventing Gorochu with the darker coat colour and more spikes on the ears to subtly pay tribute to Gorochu’s horns.

I also tried going through raichu’s dex entries and thought the whole stabbing tail in ground to discharge electricity so it doesn’t become feisty is a great concept but I also really like the idea of raichu just sitting on it’s tail as shown in my depiction so I reinvented the tails to be like secondary hands (which is a nice nod to people thinking Raichu “evolved” it’s fingers off 💀). I also really like the idea of raichu using it’s tail to hold their targets down like in this gif:

Annnd what’s even cooler is that I plan to make this design Electric/Fighting type!

Idc fuck Pawmott. Raichu having this added type makes sense with reference to boxing kangaroos and being inspired by kangaroo rats. It also already learns a decent amount of fighting type moves too surprisingly! It’s too bad the official Raichu isn’t part fighting type. It’d be so cool if it could get Power-Up Punch 😭 I was thinking it could have Iron Fist as it’s ability but even better… Scrappy would be absolutely diabolical with the 3 priority moves it learns now. ALSO !! they COMPLETELY changed his wing shape with NO regard for how that might affect the physics of his flight:

og toothless has high-speed wings, like falcons, swifts, swallows and ducks. they are ideal for a dragon as fast as night furies are, they are perfect for precision flight and speed, and this also means they have a high energy cost, which is called back to in the third film when grimmel says they can't fly for long distances.

la toothless, for some reason, has elliptical wings. you can see these on birds like crows, sparrows, grouse and owls. they are ideal for rapid take off and quick turns, such as through forests, but have a low aspect ratio, and regular flight is slow and requires flapping. (also wings like this SHOULD have a wider base. why did they change that. why.) the thing is, la toothless is clunky and not agile like he is in the og and like elliptical wings should allow him to be. he doesn't take off quickly when first fitted with his new tail, and he's clumsy and slow running from hiccup after he frees him in the woods.

all in all, there was zero reason to change the wing shape, and then to not even factor in how this would change the way he flies is *beyond* me. i literally detest this film with my whole being.

Yeah I’ll never understand why they’d drop his realistic design for something more cliché and clunky. I hate his eyes, yeah. His hind legs are just why…? But this? And the way his tail fin or even just the way his wings catching the wind general is sooo flimsy too. LA Toothless literally wouldn’t be able to fly as well compared to the og version of him which is ironic cause it’s LIVE ACTION and ABOUT FLIGHT! You want the dragons to feel realistic as possible, especially the main one that has an acquired disability and has a rider trying to work his prosthetic with not only a complex mechanism, but also needing to work/studying flight physics!

As an artist, I am really sick of the recent and increasingly agreed upon rhetoric that live action just “hits harder” than animation. I have been hearing this a lot from people especially in regards to the live action How to Train Your Dragon and I just???? No it doesn’t???

The thing is, when you make any piece of art, the media you use is can be integral to how the art is received. For example, I think traditional painting is often received by audiences as more professional than digital. I think the same goes for movies and audiences tend to assume that animated film is for younger audiences and live action is more mature.

Anyone can have any opinion they want about live action or animation but don’t say animation doesn’t hit as hard when hundreds of hours went into designing those characters and manipulating every aspect of the final product until it was exactly what the artists wanted it to be. Drawing and animating is difficult work and everything that is presented is intentional. It took the animators years to study light and color and shape and movement and anatomy to make something as beautiful as HTTYD just for audiences to say it had a greater impact in live action.

The reason this make me so angry is because artists are already having their work stolen by corporations using AI so people without the patience and dedication to study the craft or those who don’t feel like hiring artists can poorly and cheaply imitate in seconds mastery that is earned over years. Corporations are then remaking animated masterpieces as live action. For HTTYD, Lilo and Stitch, and the thankfully shelved live action tangled, it’s especially jarring because I am a relatively young person and still older than two of those movies and they are already being remade. It is not the same as Cinderella, Maleficent, or some of the other live action remakes where the source animation has existed for several generations (and the source material existed for centuries), these animated films were made within one lifetime and are already being remade into live action cash grabs.

The original HTTYD is one of the films that inspired me to become an artist and it’s really disheartening to see it be recreated so soon.

Also, I want to be very clear that my frustration has nothing to do with the casting of the movie, it only has to do with seeing animation and art in general be gutted and devalued more and more often for the sake of profit.

I have a neighbor with a cybertruck that not only uses the saltwater and lemon washing method but he also uses steel wool as a scrubber. The truck is always startlingly clean and he doesn’t even have a garage!

It’s important to get the saltwater all the way underneath the cybertruck to stop dust from building up and making it run less efficiently.

oh yes ive heard of the saltwater and lemon juice trick! ive heard that they clean cybertrucks very effectively!

This is absolutely a great trick for cleaning your cybertruck! Make sure you use equal amounts of saltwater and lemon juice though. I've also heard that saltwater directly from the ocean works best but I haven't tried it yet.

I heard even using leftover salted water from brining shrimp also helps too! The metal and the protein bind very well together to help prevent rusts in the paint job. Might be a residual “fishy odour” though but that’s okay, the rain will just wash it away. Any other salt water works just as good though! The lemon juice as others say actually helps too maintain it’s shine! Definitely recommend this trick!

"What the heck, Cheeks!? Are you out of your mind?!" The eevee scolded at her in a sharp whisper as he pounced through the wall of leaves, entering a smaller glade chamber. "That was a secret! Why would you tell them?!"

"Sorry! You should've told me? I thought it was just pretend!" Cyra meekly countered back with her ears pulled back against her head.

"Of course not! I can't keep lying to myself with my imagination! How could you even call this an adventure? We're bustin' out of here and we're going on a REAL one and we're getting THE REAL deal!" He said with a brow raised as he lead the way trotting along ahead of her.

Cyra tilted her head in unease. The pit of her gut was tugging her mind as she had bad urge knowing that this is wrong and should stop and turn back to Hiroshi, but at the same time, to finally get a real taste of exploring on her own, the idea of seeing new things but the greatest idea of all was the concept of transforming into something bigger and more powerful—and quite possibly a different type (in her perspective) just sounded so enigmatic! Her ears raised a little higher as she realized maybe this was what Hiroshi was talking about earlier and maybe she can finally learn that ultimate move: Strength if she evolved. She gave her little head a shake to push away the sense of wrongdoing before furrowing her brows as she was fueled with determination and scampered a little faster to follow the vulpine. "Well wait for me!"

Rhys was already ahead of her, he turned his head looking a bit disgruntled again. "What were you waiting for? To have your ears split by our angry parents? You know you have to find the evolutionary stone YOURSELF, not let it find you!" He sneered. "You better not be a tattletale! Are you trying to get us caught!?"

"No I'm not! I'm just... I'm just..." Cyra tried to come up with an explanation.

"Well whatever it is. You make one funny lookin'  slowpoke!" He chuckled to himself as he started prancing a little faster.

Cyra glowered at him. "Take that back! I'll show you who's a slowpoke!" She said as she tried to scamper a little faster behind.

"Well catch up to me if you can!" The eevee giggled mockingly before quickly cutting a corner which took him to a slightly downhill slope. He did it so cleanly and almost smooth. Cyra tried to do the same, but with her stubby paws she tumbled over as she tried to turn, but quickly caught herself back up and resumed the 'playful' pursuit without any falter from her little accident. Rhys was quite impressed that the pichu could handle that despite her size and her disadvantaging, babyish proportions. He smiled and tried to run a zig-zag fashion around other small bushes and litter, trying to create a small obstacle course to slow the murid down. Cyra's eyes widened as her small mitten-paws grappled the grass to help slow her down with every sharp curve she'd have to make. At times she could only see Rhy's tail for a second as he got a little ahead and with all the twigs and little random stones lying around. It made maneuvering a little difficult; especially as she wasn't used to doing this at all. But what's a mouse who can't scurry fast—an electric mouse of all things? She knew the eevee was trying pull to her tail, but she knows she can prove him wrong. She tried to dash a little bit, trying to follow his chase pattern which was difficult, but with enough courage she manage to gain on him.

Rhys turned around and stopped with what he was doing, switching to more of a bound. He looked very enthused and impressed. "Wow you are kind of fast! Huh?"

"So are you!" Cyra smiled as she scampered a little slower to match his speed, trying hard to hold back her laboured breathing as she's a little weary.

"Well I am bigger, and better," he paused with a glint of a fang, he smirked, "And badder! How's about you bite the dust!" He said as he sprinted off again, catching the little mouse off-guard. He lunged forward with a good pounce to get some decent distance from her before he started to use his back legs to start kicking huge amounts of dirt from the ground, using Sand Attack in a way that creates a slightly obscuring dust cloud.

"Whoa! Wha-!" Cyra quickly sat down to slow herself as she barely just careened into earthy billow. She blinked a couple times, very shocked knowing that if she ran into that, she probably would've "lost". She cringed at the idea of forcing her eyes shut from the stinging pain. But with one twitch of her angular ear, in the distant left side, she could hear him trying to hide in the thickets and immediately she rolled up back on all fours and darted around the fading pall, veered around through and pounced into the undergrowth and onto the eevee's back; tumbling through together and falling out of the bush. "Nice try!" Cyra giggled as she was trying to pin him down.

"Oh so you thought!" He chuckled as Cyra pushed his head down to the ground playfully as he was preparing for another round before he got an idea. "Hey wait a minute! That reminds me..." The eevee stood up which prompt Cyra to hop off him. He trotted around, shaking his soft pelt and approached her testingly with a smirk, leaning in towards the little pichu. "Are you even capable of handling such a challenge?"

"A challenge? I uh..." Cyra looked at him nervously but toughened herself up and tried standing up tall with her ears standing up again as well. "Well yes I am! ...What is the challenge?"

"Well, you're an electric type, aren't you?"

"Uh, yes I am?"

"Then why don't you prove it to me then!?"

Amika is a peculiar umbreon that lives with The Alliance. Due to her adapted nocturnal nature from evolving into an umbreon, she’s very rarely ever seen out during the daytime. Her role is mostly being a night guard for her friends. She is also one of the first pokémon to join the alliance and because of her friendship and loyalty for her friends (Specifically Sage and Rebs) is how she evolved in the first place.

Despite her role in The Alliance, she is super fun-loving and is pretty laid back! She likes to chat and learn about everyone’s day and will usually accompany those who are staying up or are suffering from insomnia. She’s quite knowledgeable with her surroundings as she’s pretty observant. Aside from her unique markings that aren’t typical for normal umbreon, she has an addiction to pinkan berries which has almost permanently made her markings, eyes and mouth appear… well pink! She’s pretty awkward, maybe even a little eccentric at times, but that may be part of her charm apart from her unique colouration. No one knows where she got or stores her berries from though. It’s her own special little secret.
