I know the TikTok ban is getting people in their feels and I get it. There are so many reasons to be upset. Censorship, economic impacts, community impact, serotonin hits, education...the lost goes on.

But I want to be real fucking clear about something. If the orange meance "saves" tiktok, that's so incredibly fucking bad.

It means he's been bribed to do so. It means our government is completely pay to play (which...it probably already is. All those companies donating $1m exactly to the inauguration wasn't a coincidence).

So yeah. Let's hope it stays dark because that means the rule of law still has a teeny tiny chance of surviving this man child's administration. For better or worse, the ban was signed into law. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously to uphold it. If the executive branch just....turns it over, we are completely without checks and balances. Which, fair, we already are, but Jesus.

Maybe none of this actually matters and I'm just screaming into the void. Trump is going to take a giant shit on the constitution and expect to be praised for it, and his sycophant man children billionaires are going to gold plate his turd so yeah.

It is almost heartbreaking the way the toxic buddie stans are completely disregarding how 911 is trying to engage with discourse surrounding homophobia & LGBTQIA+ hate in workplaces in the show, and are crucifying one of the queer characters who is explicitly gay, just because their faves aren't a couple.

Like, this 👆 scene was devastating as much as it was badass because of Chimney. Tommy didn't fight back, and instead shifted his stance a little. He looks visibly uncomfortable and hurt but doesn't respond, alluding to the fact that he doesn't want to cause a scene, and/or doesn't feel empowered enough to stand up for himself and his boyfriend.

The scene could've been such a catalyst for deeper discussions about queer representation in service jobs like firefighting. It could've even led to discourse about intersectionality and how Hen faced her own struggles in the LAFD because in addition to being queer, she is black and a woman.

But no.

Instead, y'all are raving on and on about how Tommy is ugly, Lou is d*sgusting, how the cast and Oliver hate him and his character & how Buck and Eddie should be together and anything other than buddie = queerbaiting.

If you only want Buck to be bisexual with Eddie, then you NEVER cared about bisexual/queer representation in the first place.

Equally, do we think it means anything that of all the group it's Giles who makes the argument in favor of sacrificing Dawn (Buffy's girlhood/innocence) if it means saving the world? (And we know, from Season 1's Nightmares, that this is something Giles feels guilty about doing as early as the first season but, crucially, something he can never really stop doing either. "I should have taken more time to train you, but....")

Compare Buffy's threat to Giles in Season 3's Helpless after finding out he conspired to take away her powers and reduce her to, as she puts it, "just a person" -- "if you touch me, I'll kill you" -- with Season 5's The Gift's twin lines of "[Dawn's] more than that, she's me" and her promise at the start of the final fight to "kill anyone who comes near Dawn".

Dawn is the part of Buffy that Giles is willing to let die (because "you were so gifted", per Nightmares; and "death is your gift" per Season 5) and Dawn is also the part of Buffy who won't forgive him for that. Dawn doesn't die, but the part of Buffy who got to be Dawn -- a "normal kid" who got to have a normal high school life -- does die, because she has to "save the world, again". And even though that's not exactly Giles's fault, it's not exactly not his fault either.

EQUALLY EQUALLY if we’re thinking in this lens, it’s fascinating to look at how the other characters treat Dawn (as the embodiment of Buffy’s innocence and girlhood):

Xander dotes on her, is gentle with her. Dawn is what he wishes Buffy could have had.

Anya is Anya, all the same, steady and unchanged, as she is with anyone. Innocence and girlhood or power and darkness: these are the same to her.

Willow is unsure, and shy with Dawn. Willow doesn’t know what to do with a version of Buffy that doesn’t have the power that Willow herself strives for.

Tara takes time to pay special attention to Dawn, to nurture and listen. She understands that Buffy isn’t devoid of these things, they are simply never given any proper attention.

Spike promises to protect Dawn with his life, while simultaneously telling her stories that hint at the darker aspects of life. He understands that Buffy cannot exist without Dawn, but he ALSO understands that Dawn is doomed. He understands that this is an ouroboros situation of fate sacrificing girlhood and innocence for power, but power needing girlhood and innocence to sustain itself.

In this way, Giles is a bit like Spike, understanding that Dawn is doomed, however, unlike Spike, he does not fight the inevitability of her fate. It’s rather chilling, because it’s distant love, it’s clairvoyance into inaction. Giles is the trolley problem and he will not break the switch. He will pull the lever.
