I can't help but wonder, just in case the Hail Mary failed, Earth still needed to figure out how to deal with the astrophage problem in whatever alternative solutions they could find, so someone came up with the great idea of harvesting the Petrova Line and using it to solve the energy crisis. Over the next thirty years that the crew was absent, Earth experienced both a boom in technology and a fall in climate. The earth was definitely cooling over but at the same time, the energy that they obtained from their harvester drones, allowed them to build things like massive domed structures that preserved entire species and ecosystems until Ryland successfully completed his mission.

Maybe even Ryland's old students grew to take the lead on such projects.

God, now I really, really want Andy Weir to write this book.
