then there’s that 18 month gap before season 5 and i’m like okay. okay. maturation arc. therapy. growth. vitamins. we’re healing.

volume 1 season 5? HE’S BACK. HE’S BACK!! the leader energy returns. the kindness. the protectiveness. the confidence. balance is restored.

and then VOLUME 2 HITS…

Steddie where Gareth and Eddie make a bet and Eddie must make Steve Harrington fall in love with him within two months. Gareth says Eddie will never be able to manage that, while Eddie is sure that he can; that he's charming enough and can totally win King Steve's heart if he wants to.

Meanwhile, Tommy and Steve make a bet and Steve must win over the king of the freaks, Eddie Munson. Steve is sure that Munson would never fall for him because he knows his reputation and knows Munson is not very fond of guys like him, while Tommy says that Munson is a romantic and is gonna fall easily because there's no way he's gonna resist the idea of Steve Harrington having feelings for him.

That's how Eddie and Steve, after years completely ignoring each other, start spending a lot of time together.

They have lunch together in the school yard, they skip history class so they can share a joint as they hide behind the school building and play cards.

Steve tries to educate Eddie about sports while Eddie lectures Steve about Lord of the Rings and metal music.

And it's fun.

Way more fun that they thought it would be, and it feels right, somehow. As if they were always meant to be friends, but never realized it until then.

By the end of the first month, Eddie makes a move and kisses Steve for the first time, and Steve melts in his arms.

And what should feel like victory to Eddie just leaves a bad taste in his mouth because Eddie always meant for Steve to fall in love with him, but he never meant to fall in love with Steve and now he is so fucking screwed.

For his part, Steve is having pretty much the same thoughts and is totally freaking out thinking about how the hell he is gonna tell Eddie about the bet without breaking both their hearts is the process.

(They eventually tell the truth, have a fight but end up forgiving each other because they agree they are both idiots.)
