This is part of my webcomic Postcards in Braille, which you can read on ComicFury or Tapastic. Updates on Mondays!
This comic/guide works well enough on its own, so I thought it’d be nice to post it here as well :D Braille is really cool and you don’t need to be blind or visually impaired to learn it - and spreading the use of Braille can help us build a more inclusive society! everyone wins!
Bonus fun fact: Braille is originally based on Night writing (or sonography), a tactile reading/writing system created for soldiers to communicate silently at night. Louis Braille adapted it into easier to read cells, creating the Braille system. Good to know it evolved into something so useful!
I’m guessing that W being an exception in Braille may have been because Louis Braille was French, and French doesn’t really use the W except in loanwords (for example, French pangrams virtually always contain a loanword to get the W in).
That’s exactly correct! When Braille was first created W was not part of the alphabet, it being French, and had to be added later for the English alphabet
Here’s the thing about shows like South Park and Family Guy that make their money off of being edgy and offensive. They fundamentally reduce their viewers’ capacity for empathy. If I found a joke funny, and you found it offensive, you’re just too sensitive. This is directly related to the ride of the alt right and the election of trump. In this essay I will
OP WHERE’S THE FUCKING ESSAY
So instead of writing the essay this is exactly what I’m talking about. This shit reduces your capacity for empathy. If you can’t understand why people are hurt by a simple joke, nay, think that’s the whole point… How the hell are you supposed to feel for someone when they come to you complaining of ACTUAL oppression? It’s the foot in the door phenomenon. A little oppression isn’t too bad, cuz it’s funny, right? It hardens your heart against others
Somebody actually wrote this essay already. It’s a Twitter thread about how the alt right recruits teenage boys by getting them to post slightly offensive memes… And then when they get called out and don’t understand why the alt right channels their anger at feminists and women and people of color and liberals. According to this thread, boys are being “set up”
Read the whole thread at the link above this is just a snip
“offensive” shows like Family Guy are a precursor to the alt right and you can’t change my mind
Y'all this shit so basic even Spongebob one it. It’s not about being too sensitive. It’s normalizing abuse through comedy that’s a foot in the door to greater oppression.
this put into words what makes me so uncomfortable about these shows

@vampdcon and @fanotastic new favorite scene from our viewing of three or so episodes friday night.
I think these two are their new favorite duo next to demolisher and cyclonus/snowcat.

"lola bunny space jam this, lola bunny feminist icon that" everyone shut up lola bunny space jam will never amount to whatever the hell was going on with her in the looney tunes show
my dad just exploded into laughter out of nowhere and told me ‘imagine the lion king but with sea lions’ he has been chuckling about it for 5 straight minutes now
apparently it doesn’t matter that i’ve told him 10 times it’s the monkey who raises the newborn and not the lion himself, this is the scene he has been imagining
“he can’t raise his kid over his head”
I want it

I have to show people this post when I try to explain why I love tumblr
you know usually i don’t bring up once upon a time as a positive comparison to something but remember how they had an episode of cruella backstory and we thought for the entire runtime they were trying to redeem and explain her actions and then at the end they pulled the carpet out from under us and said “PSYCH, ALL OF THIS WAS A LIE FROM AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR, SHE’S JUST A BITCH WHO DOES WHAT SHE WANTS” because they somehow understood that some villains don’t need tragic pasts sometimes they’re just rich people?
cruella 2021: she’s just a repressed girlboss we swear :(
once upon a time in like. idr 2014?:
[x]
Cruella does not exist in a grey area of morality. She’s literally designed in black and white. She’s a straight up villain and I think that’s just neat.
Also, Twisted had an entire musical number about how all Disney villains were misunderstood heroes of their own story…
…except they’re still all appalled at Cruella.

Evelyn Berezin built the first word processor.
Her patents include:
Information Transfer Apparatus
Electronic Data File Processor
Information Transfer System
On-Line Data Transfer Apparatus
Electrical Assemblage
Data Processing System
Arithmetic Device
Electronic Calculator with Dynamic Recirculating Storage Register
Control means with Record Sensing for an Electronic Calculator
Not only did she build the first word processor..
Among them was a system for the US Army for range calculations, a system for controlling the distribution of magazines, and what is now considered the first office computer.
..Which was entirely designed by herself. The first office computer.

This is the link from the video. It’s important that we try to take action. Don’t buy chocolate that may be connected with slavery. In the link there’s also information about slavery free chocolate.

End child labor in the cobalt and cocoa industries.
On chocolate, coffee, tea, other products coming from the global south: if you can afford it, buy only products with some kind of a certificate that demonstrates the product has been ethically produced (and this has been verified by an outside agency), such as the Fairtrade, UTZ or Rainforest Alliance certificate.
But also beware that some producers have made up their own certificates, with no outside oversight. These essentially fake certificates include Cocoa Life, the certificate invented by Mondelez – one of the companies listed behind the link for using slave labour, who stopped using Rainforest Alliance certified cocoa and switched to their own certificate instead.
