i’m currently rereading witch hat atelier from the start, and i’ve noticed something.

When depicted, Coco is generally associated to Qifrey (probably because they’re both linked to the brimcaps and their way around magic is very similar), while Agott is more associated to Olruggio as they’re both the voice of reason.

Yet, as i’m reading the story again (thou i must say, i love these depictions, they’re so precious!!), it feels to me that young Olly is more like Coco…he was (and still is) such a warm presence, always ready to lend a hand, always so positive about magic

Young Qifrey, on the contrary, reminds me more of Agott, so focused on regaining what they forcibly took from him like Agott is desperate to prove herself to her own family and regain her place.

Then, of course, Qifrey and Olruggio grew, and their personalities inevitably changed. Yet, to me, the parallels in the story feels more like it’s: Coco/Olly, Agott/Qifrey

I actually ADORE the relationship between Qifrey and Tartah because Qifrey always looks like he's barely holding back the urge to sweep Tartah up like he does with the girls and poor Tartah looks like he'd legitimately rather be ANYWHERE else.

Qifrey canonically seeing his younger self in tartah too.

He doesn't even know he's the catalyst to Tartah's loss of trust in the adults around him and the pointed hat system. Does he even know Tartah's with the brimmed hats now? Does he know how badly he wrecked this poor kids life by memory wiping his grandpa that one time?

Qifrey very clearly has no ill will towards Tartah, it makes me wonder what would become of their relationship if Tartah never asked about that light...

Knocked flat by a tree, water-vortexed, electrocuted while in the water vortex, lost all feeling in his hand due to the aforementioned electrocution which made him drop and shatter a pot of tea, then tackled by a flying child at rocket-speed all in the same episode. This may be extremely naive of me but I don’t believe orufrey is doomed I think they’re gonna kiss and hold hands and grow old together and everything will work out through the power of love and friendship and dabbling in forbidden magic

I whole heartedly believe that they aren't doomed. A bit ago, I saw someone (I cannot for the life of me remeber who 😭, it might have been DMpunk on youtube, but I'm not sure) talking about the fact that having Qifrey die at the end doesn't fit with what Shirahama has set up. She has set up a world where consequences do exist, and they always feel real and understandable to me, even if they seem unfair. These consequences serve to teach the character a lesson, teach them that the actions they take have effects that last. As such, I don't see Qifrey's consequence being his death, as what could HE learn from that? What I imagine might happen is the he loses his vision, but he lives.

It would be fitting, would it not? The thing that many people think is the reason he had the seed planted in him in the first place, what he was trying to fix, only for him to have to learn to live with this new disability. This would also fit with the discussion of disability woven throughout the story. He had a disability, someone tried to fix it, be him, his parents, or even some teachers of some kind, and in trying to fix it, it caused a worse problem. Now he has fixed the problem that would kill him, but he has to live with the disability that he tried to run away from.

Honestly, idk if this made much sense, I'm pretty tired, but I wanted to add to this since I genuinely believe that they are not doomed. I could go into how I think Shirahama is writing them to be endgame, but that is for a different time lol

willing to bet that olruggio backstory is gonna talk about how dehumanizing it is to be an ideal used both to encourage and punish others, as well as how confining it is to have no other choice because he CAN do better if he tries, so he WILL do better. because the other option is being labelled as a failure, and being a failure means he’ll never be any good again. and then he meets qifrey, and hes already ‘failed’ to befriend him from the outset. and its through meeting qifrey that he learns that failure isnt eternal, because he DOES manage to befriend qifrey despite qifreys initial disdain for his company.

i think this helps olruggio be more picky with his work and i also think it makes him more worried about failing qifrey because he can fail others and walk it off but qifreys his best friend. i think thats part of why he offers the spell to qifrey. because hes afraid of failing qifrey. i think thats also why hes so loyal to qifrey no matter what. just as he taught qifrey how to get along in the world, qifrey showed him that getting along is optional in some cases (but not all.) he can lose his reputation, but he cant lose one of few people who treats him like a normal person because no matter how many of their conversations he forgets, hes never going to get his memory of how it feels to have the room to be human, erased. well, unless a spell goes wrong, that is.

Olruggio: I specialize in fire magic due to its practical applications as a light source, a heat source, and a way to fend off predators. My signature spells are all about making people feel safe or comfortable, which I suppose could be read as symbolic of my larger character motivations.

Qifrey: I specialize in water magic because I fucking hate it.
