The reason why The Secret History is so good is because it isn't trying to be anything. Sure, when reading we can feel Tartt's inspirations; we can see the influence of Dickens and the writers and philosophers of Ancient Greece, but that is natural as everyone gets inspiration from somewhere.

I think a lot of people forget that "dark academia", while visually appealing, to be sure, is not a formally define literary genre - it is an internet aesthetic that I believe started on this platform. 19 year old Donna Tartt did not sit down in like 1983 to write a "dark academia" novel, people online gave it that label many years later. The novel is concerned with aesthetics, but Tartt had no concept of "dark academia" when writing it. I've seen people on BookTok talk about how they felt disappointed that the novel isn't dark academia enough, and I just think, but it isn't dark academia because "dark academia" was created around The Secret History, The Secret History was not created around "dark academia".

I think that's why I dislike it when novels that are published today are marketed using internet aesthetics and tropes, because it creates the impression that the writer is trying too hard to fit into a certain box, that they are ticking off boxes, rather than writing something that feels natural.

Hey do you know what rumination is?

Rumination is probably the most common type of OCD compulsion, but I rarely see anyone talking about it. I've talked to multiple people diagnosed with OCD who didn't even recognize it as a compulsion.

Basically, if you have OCD you have terrible intrusive thoughts. They can be about anything, but common themes are fear of being a bad person, fear of hurting someone, fear of contamination. etc.

Rumination is when you get stuck in a spiral. Rumination is when you spend hours catastrophizing, overthinking, analyzing, telling yourself it's going to be okay.

I'll say it again:

Rumination is a compulsion.

Rumination is a compulsion, and that means you have to stop doing it.

I did ERP (exposure response prevention) for my OCD with a therapist! For 9 months! And it did help, but the idea didn't really click until I found this website a couple years later.

And Oh My God. It made things make so much more sense, and I was able to pull myself out of an episode even though I wasn't in therapy or on meds at the time.

Genuinely if you have OCD, or even if you suspect you have OCD, I'm begging you to read some of these articles.

the whole point of girls doing the not like other girls thing is basically them believing that the girls around them lack an interior life. they were raised on depictions of women as shallow caricatures and they recognize themselves to be actual people with thoughts and feelings, but instead of drawing the conclusion that these depictions of women are incorrect, they draw the conclusion that those depictions of women are correct and that must mean they're smarter and have more substance than the "average" woman. to exit the not like other girls phase means recognizing that all real life women have the same level of interiority as you do, and that depictions of women in the media as consistently empty headed and frivolous are misogynistic stereotypes not grounded in reality.

i say all this to say that to exit a not like other girls phase does not necessitate taking an interest in "traditionally feminine" ways of dress and makeup, nor does it mean never saying anything negative about the beauty industry

I really want to girlify and whimsify this instagram account I’m running about philosophy that I’m trying to get to promote meaningful discussions but idk if doing that and marketing it to conform to an instagram aesthetic will defeat its purpose and/or make me lose valuable perspectives from a diverse audience, especially those of men and maybe feminists or other women who think girlish whimsy = childishness (like my mom🙄) and women who are more right wing (I know that femininity is typically embraced and encouraged by the right but I feel like this specific brand and trend of femininity is more often coopted by people on the left who are specifically using it to ward off men, be loud, unapolegetic, and proud of their unique personality.

Also philosophy as a field in general tends to be male dominated so for some reason I’m afraid that if I target directly towards women I’ll get less engagement. Currently, my audience is mostly male and they’re the ones liking and commenting.

Does anyone have any advice?

While memes like these are funny, they have some assumption that the sexism baked into it will be well received by everyone. It’s not just the generalization of body dysmorphia in different ways among the man and woman. Why can’t the “me” be female? It is relatable to me as a woman as well. For Pete’s sake, even Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath are depicted here, and they were highly influential female writers and thinkers who are role models for many women. But since most of the people in the post are men, I’ll take a guess and say that the target audience and the audience the post reached are mostly “nerdy loser” “nice guys”.
