I’ve said it once but I’ll say it again, one of the most special things about U.S. Agent is that he looks out for the little guy.
This is so prevalent during Avengers West Coast, and it’s so wholesome and just endears me more to his character.
I feel like it’s no secret that people like heroes who are down to earth, literally. While the most focus goes into galactic, other worldly battles, people truly appreciate just a person who goes out to help the people. The little guy.
My favorite instances of this:
While John is visiting his hometown, there’s a group of teenage boys who not only just terrorize the town, but almost hit a little girl while speeding down the road. Someone says, “boys will be boys” and John’s replies “and we let them?” He tracks them down wreaking havoc in the cemetery his parents are buried in and teaches them a little lesson about not being little a-holes.
When a gang is trying to burn down a a small shop owned by a Korean family, John shows up and puts a stop to it.
John goes to the border to stop a rogue border patrol agent who is killing illegal immigrates with an AR as soon as they pass over the border. He saves the children from the first attack, and eventually gets down to who was doing it and stops him.
He stops to help a priest who was broken down on the side of the road with a flat tire.
He adamantly refused to remove civilians from the beach where they were protesting, and desperately tried to defuse the situation and keep the civilians safe.
You see it a lot in the moments where all the other WCAs go off and fail to include him, he just wanders off to be of help to random civilians. He was doing this same thing before he got attacked by the Lethal Legion in issue 98, “Agony of the Agent”
So, if you need another reason to like U.S. Agent, here you are. I like to call this the spider-man effect. The “super” hero who cares more about saving the worlds of people over the world itself.
