I’ve always found it to be a cruel irony when people defend self-deprecation as a “coping mechanism” and how they’re “dealing with shit.” Because those are the exact same excuses we used to hear from teenagers all the time when someone asked them about all the scars on their arms and legs.

“Coping Mechanism” has never been an inherently positive word. Therapy is a coping mechanism. Creative arts can be a coping mechanism. Sewing, drawing, dance, sports can all be coping mechanisms. But so can self-harm, self-deprecation, drug abuse, wallowing, addictive venting, and high-risk stunts.

There is nothing positive about doing damage to yourself, be it physically or emotionally. We all recognize emotional abuse to be a real, tangible thing and yet so many people will stubbornly insist that it’s healthy to emotionally abuse and gaslight yourself.

Get therapy.
