Godzilla-Reads Monster Book Recs
One type of book that I absolutely love, especially in the fall, is a book with monsters in it. I’m also a huge creature feature movie fan. In the spirit of monster books, here’s a rec list!
“Cycle of the Werewolf” by Stephen King- Fantastic book that follows the year-long exploits of the rise and fall of a local werewolf in a small town.
“Blood and Chocolate” by Annette Curtis Klause- After a terrible accident, a pack of werewolves moves to a new town and Vivien has to deal with teenage life, boyfriends, and werewolf hierarchy. YA book.
“The Last Werewolf” by Glen Duncan- You meet Jacob Marlowe who is the last werewolf and he’s about to give up on life when a bloody mystery pulls him back from the depths of his self despair.
“Dracula” by Bram Stoker- One of my FAVORITE books, this is a classic and one of the most famous vampire stories. Jonathan Harker is in Transylvania settling the account of Count Dracula as he moves to England, but finds something very sinister and horrifying about his stay at his castle.
“Bunnicula” by James and Deborah Howe- A funny and fantastic children’s book about a rabbit who is “sucking the life” out of vegetables. Today vegetable, tomorrow the world! Who will stop him?
“Dead Until Dark” by Charlaine Harris- This is the first book in The Southern Vampire Mysteries series, which inspired the TV show True Blood. I, personally, really like these books. Is having a vampire boyfriend all it stacks out to be? Ask our narrator, Sookie Stackhouse.
“Loch” by Paul Zindel- A teenager with the fitting nickname, Loch, is sent out with his father and sister to track down a dangerous lake monster. But sometimes the real monsters aren’t always living in the water.
“Beast” by Peter Benchley- From the author of Jaws, comes another heartless, killing sea creature. This time, it’s a giant squid! Who will stop the reign of terror this creature has unleashed?
“Mrs. Caliban” by Rachel Ingalls- Ignoring my current list of horror sea monsters, how about a married woman who finds romantic companionship in a seven-foot tall frog-like man who escapes a marine science lab? Wonderful book!
“The Enemy” by Charlie Higson- The first book in a series, this post-apocalyptic world is infested with a virus that turns adults into zombies. A group of kids have to make a perilous journey into the heart of London in hopes of finding a safe space.
“World War Z” by Max Brooks- This book is a collection of oral history that shows us the progress of the great zombie war. Much, much better than the movie adaptation!
“Cell” by Stephen King- After a mysterious broadcast over global cell towers turns people into violent creatures, a father is trying to reunite with his son.
