“Who’s the groom?” Kara looks up from the onion she’s chopping with a frown. “What do you mean? No one has to be the groom; it’s a same sex marriage.”

Clark gestures to the paperwork spread out across the kitchen table. “You said you wanted to keep this as close to Kryptonian tradition as we could, and that means respecting the naming ceremony, which means I have to file paperwork with the guild, which means…”

“Oh.” Kara puffs out her cheeks for a moment while she thinks about it. “Somebody has to be the groom.”

Sam and Lena have gone out for a morning walk, ostensibly because Lena isn’t feeling well and needs some fresh air, but it hasn’t escaped Kara’s notice that the pair of them have been spending secretive moments together here and there wherever they can find them. It has been leaving Kara with a feeling of restless unease, but in this case it’s also a blessing, because Kara doesn’t want to ask Lena the Kryptonian version of ‘so who’s supposed to be the man in this relationship’ if she can help it. It’s just for paperwork, she tells herself. It doesn’t matter to Lena anyway.

“It could be Lena,” Clark suggests, “Because she has a higher status on Earth - don’t look at me like that, she could buy your apartment building with her pocket change - or it could be you because you’re the higher ranking member of Kryptonian society.”

“Uhm, also on Earth I’m literally a superhero.”

Clark waves a dismissive hand and then chuckles and ducks as she chucks a piece of onion at him across the room.

“Okay,” he says. “Okay. You can be the groom. So your hand goes on top then, and she has to-”

“Present the gift. I know. I lived on Krypton for longer than you’ve spent on Argo.”

Clark makes a face. The fact that Kara remembers Krypton and Clark doesn’t is sometimes a point of tension between them, especially when Clark’s excitement over Argo leads him to explain things to Kara that have been common knowledge to her for as long as she can remember.

“Sorry,” he says. And then, “So Lena Zor-El.”

Kara pauses again in her chopping. At this rate Sam and Lena are going to get back from their walk and this same damn onion is going to be on the cutting board. “She’s not marrying my father,” Kara says. She gestures with the knife. “You wouldn’t give Lois your father’s name.”

“I know,” Clark says, “But I’m a-”

Kara gestures with the knife again. “Be very careful how you finish that sentence.”

Clark’s jaw closes with a snap.

And it’s not his fault, really. It’s not his fault that Krypton has never recognized a same sex marriage as far as anyone knows, or that the naming convention is patriarchal, or that Kara is more stubborn than stone when she wants to be. But it is certainly his problem.

“Kara-El doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue,” he points out, echoing Kara’s knife gestures with his pen. “And it will probably reveal your identity the second any on on Earth looks carefully at your paperwork.”

Kara scrunches up her nose. “Fine. I will concede that point.”

“So Zor-El it is,” Clark says, leaning forward to fill in the form.

Kara points the knife at him and he stops with a resigned sigh, hand hovering just above the paper. “Kar-El,” she says. “Just drop the ‘a’ and it works fine.”

“Lena Kar-El,” Clark repeats. Kara ignores the hair rising on the back of her neck at the sound of it. There is something about the idea of Lena bearing her name that makes Kara feel, well, something. She’s at a rare loss for words even as Clark continues to speak. “That sounds-”

But Lena chooses that moment to push through the back door of the cabin, shedding her jacket as she goes. Sam, lingering just inside the door to kick off her shoes, studies Clark and Kara with curious eyes.

“Lena Kar-El?” Sam asks.

Lena opens her mouth a little, cocks her head to one side, fixes Kara with a thoughtful expression. “Is that what we’re going with?”

Kara fumbles for a smooth reply and comes up with anything but. “It’s- I mean we don’t- I mean if you don’t-”

“I like it,” Lena says at last. “Lena Kar-El.” She moves past Kara to wash her hands in the kitchen sink and then reaches across her for the towel tossed carelessly beside the cutting board. Half of Kara is wondering why Lena didn’t use the towel hung over the sink for precisely that purpose. The other half of her is frozen in place by Lena’s proximity, by the heat of her as her arm brushes Kara’s. And then all of Kara is frozen when Lena leans up and presses a delicate kiss to her cheek.

“I’m going to make coffee,” Lena announces. “Does anyone not want any? Kara, darling, are you planning to chop that onion or just stare it?”

It’s not the onion Kara is staring at. Perhaps it’s Kara’s imagination, but Lena doesn’t seem to mind.

“The Pact” by Jodi Picoult - (suicide tw) A tragedy hits 2 families. The novel centers on a trial and flashbacks to the event in question. 

“Someone to Run With” by David Grossman - set on the streets of Jerusalem, a boy tries to return a lost dog to its owner, a girl who has run away from home in search of her brother (this is the English translation, obviously, but if you can read novels in Hebrew I highly recommend reading the original, משהו לרוץ איתו)

Urban Fantasy/Fantasy/SciFi

“The Mediator” series by Meg Cabot - teenaged girl starts seeing ghosts / YA romance (although the fact that the MC is Jewish is not even remotely relevant to the plot, it is mentioned outright several times which is more than most books)

“The Cure” by Sonia Levitin - futuristic dystopian society tries to cure one young man’s appreciation of music by sending him to a Jewish shtetl in 13th century Poland (fair warning for dystopian fans, though, the middle 2/3rds reads like historical fiction, so.)

Children’s (Middle Grade) Books

“All of a Kind Family” by Sydney Taylor - the classic “1920s NYC Jewish family”

“Dave at Night” by Gail Carson Levine - boy sneaks out of an orphanage in early 20th century NYC

“Witness” by Karen Taylor Hesse - told in free verse, the KKK visits a small town  (I’m including it because it’s not a Holocaust book, and it’s really good, but it still might  will set off your antisemitism sensors so fair warning)

“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” by Judy Blume - Classic. (Also, takes on an interfaith family in a really interesting and nuanced way!)

“Samir and Yonatan” by Daniella Carmi - two boys (one Israeli, one Palestinian) end up in the same hospital and learn that they have more in common than they thought

“Angels in America” by Harold Kushner - I can’t even begin to describe this one just google it. (or: Jewish and Mormon gay people in NYC during the AIDS epidemic, and also angels)

“Thirteen: The Musical” by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown - Jewish boy’s parents get divorced and he moves from NYC to Appleton, Indiana right before his Bar Mitzvah

Also for children’s books: Rebecca in the American Girl historical collection is a Russian Jewish immigrant.

Also for weird epic romances, I remember Cynthia Freeman having a lot of Jewish protagonists.  One of her books (Illusions of Love) slightly discusses the Holocaust but it is from the perspective of an American Jewish character who served in World War II and it’s not presented as *the* thing that defines him.  (Most of that book is a love triangle between this character, the Nice Jewish Girl his parents want him to marry, and an Irish-Catholic woman from a poor background who works her way into an advertising career.)

I haven’t read them [yet? to-read list miles long, concentration about an inch long] but if you’re down with indie-pub check out @shiraglassman who authors a series of fantasy novels featuring f/f couples. I’ll bet she knows more novels t add to the list too!

It is definitely cool! I actually didn’t get the @ notification for some reason but I found this post just poking around Jumblr and then checked the notes to see what people were saying on it. I do have books to add to this list; not just my own–as you said, fluffy f/f-focused fantasy starring Mostly Jews–but also:

Miss Jacobson’s Journey by Carola Dunn (review) - Regency-era spy romance about escaping from France and getting back to England. Hero and heroine are both Jewish and although they’re Ashkies, it has Sephardic rep as well

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker (review) - 1900′s fantasy set in the immigrant communities of NYC. Beautiful epic drama about friendship.

…and wonderful graphic novels like The Rabbi’s Cat, the Rabbi Harvey books (our legends told as if they were set in the American Wild West), and the Mirka books (fantasy starring an Orthodox pre-teen girl.)

The YA LGBT contemporaries Gone Gone Gone by Hannah Moskowitz and My Year Zero by Rachel Gold have Jewish MC’s. And non-LGBT but YA about Orthodox teenager is Playing with Matches by Suri Rosen.

By the way, @dappercat, your concentration may have an easier time with the standalone short stories in my universe than my full-length novels: Tales from Perach. They range from 900 to 9000 words and 6 of the 7 of them have Jewish MC’s.

Gentlemen of the Road by Michael Chabon - A pair of 10th century Jewish mercenaries (who are almost certainly a couple) go on a quest to return the kidnapped prince of Khazaria to his empire.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik: MC is a Jewish moneylender in fantasy Russia. It’s a retelling of a couple of fairy tales, including a loose adaptation of Rumpelstiltskin. It was nominated for a Hugo last year and I love it so much!

Lighting the Flames by Sarah Wendell: contemporary romance novella. I haven’t read it yet, but it is a Hanukkah friends to lovers romance by the author who runs the Smart Bitches Trashy Books website.

Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz: Two teens with very different chronic illnesses—and different outlooks on dating while sick— fall in love. (Neither of them die, and that’s not a spoiler!) One of the teens is Jewish.

Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert: Contemporary mlm romance with a haters-to-lovers trope who go on a cross-country road trip for their Critical Roll-like show. One of the protagonists is Jewish.

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed: YA rom-com where one of the characters is Jewish and the other is Muslim. They meet and work on a local political campaign together.

What if It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera: YA mlm rom-com where, after a chance and brief meet-cute the two protagonist (one of whom is Jewish), have to find one another in the massive-ness that is NYC. Then the first date is No Good, so they have to try again. Will this couple make it when the universe seems to be working against them?

Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert: YA realistic fiction that focuses mainly on the blended family’s relationships, specifically between the brother and sister. Some of the characters are converted Jews. 

It’s a Whole Spiel: Love, Latkes, and Other Jewish Stories by various authors: From stories of confronting their relationships with Judaism to rom-coms with a side of bagels and lox, It’s a Whole Spiel features one story after another that says yes, we are Jewish, but we are also queer, and disabled, and creative, and political, and adventurous, and anything we want to be.

Okay I just read your Samwell slam poetry headcanon with all the team showing up and cheering, and I love the idea of all the Samwell poets getting really into it? Like, it can be scary reading out your work, and the level of positive feedback is reassuring. So it becomes a local tradition

Okay, what we really need here is like a SUPER Outsider POV fic starring a freshmen hockey player joining the Samwell team but like… 12 years after Bitty et al. have left. 

And this new player, let’s call him Penzie for reasons unknown, is trying to learn all the rules of college hockey so he can fit in and be his best (as one does) and he keeps thinking he has a handle on it and then there keep being increasingly weird traditions that just pop up as if seemingly out of nowhere.

Penzie arrives for a players-only meeting taking place at 8PM on a Thursday night only to find they are actually going to cheer loudly and aggressively at a poetry slam?? He gets a stern talking to from the captains when he doesn’t stand and do the wave after one ocean-themed poem is finished. No one can tell him why the hockey team does this??

The hockey team has an illegal intramural football team. Again, no explanation. But there is an expectation that he find a position best suited to his abilities and come to practice once a week. The whole team wears traditionally female clothes for a week in the spring “for luck”. There is a mandatory off season trip to the aquarium. Everyone buys matching t-shirts to wear to it. If possible, the t-shirts feature some kind of shark. They all insist on walking to Annies for coffee even though there is a Starbucks much closer to the Haus. And, if you wanted to buy local, Annie has a second location in the opposite direction that might be a bit closer too…

And speaking of the Haus… The Haus is particularly full of old, random traditions. There is a taped off box area on the ground that you are not allowed to step in even though it means you have to do a weird little jump right at the bottom of the stairs. Beer is only allowed in the downstairs fridge even though there is plenty of room in the one in the kitchen. The oven is called Betsy. All the dish towels have either pies or bunnies on them and when Penzie tries to buy plain blue ones, he gets yelled at and then forced to hand=stitch bunnies into them. For some reasons ducks are also acceptable??

The smallest person on the team is not allowed to sit on the couch directly, only on a blanket on the couch. There is an x-box controller that can only be used if you are left-handed. There are 14 different Nativity scenes scattered throughout the Haus year round even though no one is particularly religious. They still follow an old tub juice recipe that has been carved into the wall of the hallway. It is a yearly tradition to repaint one of the walls of the living room. No one remembers who put up the Pink Floyd poster but rumor if you take it down you break your leg the next game so no one dares. 

Even on the ice, the team is just plain weird. The only two options for stick tape are rainbow or pink.And he would think it’s just hazing except… well, everyone does the stick tape thing and, though, it is required that all members of the hockey team be able to land at least one ice dancing jump by the time they finish freshmen year, rumor also has it that the seniors have a Senior-Night in which they perform full ice dancing routines. And Penzie would say that that’s a lie except… well, he’s pretty sure he caught Yorky practicing spins the other day at practice…

Basically, let’s all pour one out for Penzie, the most confused little tadpole. He’s so lost and so confused and god bless him, he is going to be an amazing captain one day. He’s even going to win the seniors-only ice dancing competition.

Which meant he looked up other baking videos on YouTube to see how they compared to his and if he could steal any ideas. Then he started looking up hockey videos, and he saw Jack Zimmermann score some sweet goals and give some really awkward interviews.

Then again, did it matter that much what Jack Zimmermann said when he was in the locker room after a game, still sweaty and pink-faced with nothing on his top half but a skin-tight Under Armor shirt?

It probably wasn’t the same Jack Zimmermann anyway.

Set immediately after 05x10 “Mercy Shall Follow Me” – and in a universe where the events of 02x12 “The Hail Mary” more closely followed the plot of “Dragonfly in Amber”

 There hadn’t been very much conversation these past few days, traveling back home to the Ridge.

 Mama and Da knew what she and Roger had been up to, once Bonnet had been staked to drown. Da had given her a look – whether it was pride or sorrow, she couldn’t tell – and had turned away with Mama, to make stops at the glassblower’s and the blacksmith to retrieve the new components for Mama’s syringes.

 Mama and Da and Ian hadn’t said anything when she and Roger had returned in mid-afternoon. As unusual as it was for them to travel even a short distance before nightfall, all of them longed desperately to leave Wilmington behind.

 So they had, making camp two hours outside of the town that night. Communicating with each other only enough to exchange the basics for food and shelter, everyone lost in their own thoughts. Normally they would all settle close around the campfire, but that first night Ian had announced he would take watch, and as Mama and Da drifted off into the trees, so had she and Roger, in the opposite direction.

 They comforted each other that night, as best as they could beneath the stars. The simple joy of holding each other, feeling so much relief…it was indescribable.

 It was over.

 But there was still so much to be said.

 Five days into the journey home, as they made camp after another day’s long ride, she didn’t realize how lost she was in her thoughts until her Da’s gentle hand settled on her shoulder.

 Startled, she blinked up at him. He smiled, slinging the rifle over his shoulder.

 “Yer Mam has asked me to find our supper. Come wi’ me, a leannan?”

 He reached out one big, strong, capable hand. She took it, following him away from the campsite – past Roger and Ian pitching their tents, and Mama building a fire.

 “We won’t be long,” Da said, perhaps a bit too loudly.

 Roger looked up, sharing a quick smile. Handed her the rifle that hadn’t left her side since Wilmington. Then returned to his work.

 Da didn’t speak for a long while, padding quietly through the forest. But finally he did, coming to a stop and resting on a large rock.

 “Just a few weeks before Culloden, yer Mam was called to tend to a sick man. We had kent him during our time in Paris.” He sighed. “Alexander Randall. Jack Randall’s younger, more fragile younger brother.”

 Brianna wanted desperately to lay her hand on his – but something about his demeanor told her not to.

 “I went wi’ her, of course, to make sure she was safe. Neither of us expected Jack Randall to pay his brother a visit.”

 His hand – lined with the scars that she knew were the legacy of her mother’s first orthopedic surgery, done in haste after Da’s hand had been all but destroyed – clenched into a fist on his knee.

 “I was obliged to spend time wi’ him, that day and on subsequent days. I realized that the only love he ever felt in his miserable life was for his brother. He – he became soft around him. More human.”

 She swallowed. “And that confused you.”

 He nodded. “God help me, I gave him kindness, out of respect for his brother. It killed me that I could feel compassion for him, having lost my brother when I was a lad. Even though I wanted nothing more than to kill him. Avenge myself.”

 She settled the butt of the rifle on the ground between her legs. “And you hated yourself more for feeling that kindness.”

 “He didna deserve kindness. But seeing him that way – it helped me perhaps understand a wee bit, how he came to be the way he was. It – it didnae change my desire to hurt him. But it did make me think about it.”

 “Shades of gray,” she mused.

 “Aye.”

 She turned to face him. “Killing him felt good, Da.”

 He smiled sadly. “I know. It did.”

 “It doesn’t change what happened to me. But I feel like I’m in control now.”

 He sighed, eyes full of sorrow. “That’s where you’re wrong, mo chridhe. You sent him to the hell where he belongs. Ye dinna need to live in fear any longer. But even though he willnae stalk the earth no longer…” Gently, carefully he unclenched his fist and rested it over her heart. “It will be in here for the rest of your days. Ye willnae think of it all the time anymore. Ye will always ken that the story ended in the way ye wanted it to. But trust me when I say, when ye least expect it, it will come back to you again.”

 She pursed her lips. “When does it come back for you?”

 “In my dreams, usually. When I was in fever wi’ the snakebite – I was in as much pain as I was right after all that happened.” He paused. “And sometimes, I dinna ken what brings it to my mind – only, I could be wi’ the horses, or at the whisky spring, or even in bed wi’ yer Mam. It will come back. And I’ve learned to no’ question the why. Yer Mam has helped me wi’ that. Do ye ken that she has troubles of her own, from her time in the great world war?”

 Brianna frowned. “You mean – she has flashbacks?”

 “I dinna ken what to call them, but since I married her I remember at least four times when she returned to the war, in her mind, and stopped breathing.”

 Brianna brought a hand to her mouth, shocked. “Oh my God,” she whispered.

 “I only tell you this, Brianna, so that you understand that you’re no’ alone. Surely ye ken that, living wi’ Roger. But yer Mam taught me, and I reminder her of this too, that the best thing to do is to let it happen. Dinna fight it, it will stay longer wi’ ye. And then when it’s over, find a person you love and just be wi’ them.”

 She took his hand between her own. “Did one just happen to you?”

 He didn’t lower his gaze from hers, but squeezed her hand. “It doesnae ever go away. But wi’ time, ye can heal of it.”

 He pulled her to him, then, and they held each other for a long time.

 “I wish this never happened to ye, a chiusle. I only ever want ye to be happy and safe.”

 She held him tighter. “I am. Right now. Always.”

 He kissed the top of her head, and whispered “Deo gratias” into her crown.

Richard isn’t really paying attention to Jack, more invested in finding a reasonably priced necklace for Susie — but when he finally does look up from the case, he sees his son’s boyfriend fixated hard on the men’s wedding bands.

Richard watches silently as Jack moves from the top of the glass, leaning down to inspect the rings at different angles, moving away from the gaudier, thick metal rings and inlaid diamonds down to the simpler bands.

“Son?”

Jack startles as if he’s been caught doing something shameful. 

“We ready? Did you find one?” Jack asks quickly, moving away from the display case, but Richard doesn’t follow.

Richard doesn’t do anything, knowing instinctively that this is a critical moment and if he says the wrong thing he could spoil whatever big future thoughts are rolling around Jack’s head for god knows how long. He slowly edges in on the rings himself, and waits for Jack to join him. It takes about ten seconds, and Richard tries not to laugh at how skittish the boy is.

Reluctantly, Jack presses the tip of his finger against the glass, over a silver band with a thin, red stripe through the middle. Not too showy, but not simple, either. 

“What, um,” Jack swallows, loud enough Richard can hear it. “What do you think about that one? It’s Samwell red. Kinda.”

“Well,” Richard presses his lips together, buying time, desperate not to say the wrong thing. “If we’re talking about what I think we’re talking about, I think he’d wear a piece of twine proudly if you offered. That said, it’s a real good looking ring.”

“Yeah,” Jack nods. Lips thin, eyes bright as he looks anywhere but directly at Richard. “Yeah, I think so, too.”

Richard catches sight of a salesperson and leaves Jack alone to contemplate a major life decision, itching to reach for his phone, but it’s not time. Not yet.

He can keep a secret as long as he needs to.
