It's really tiring to see people blaming ONLY Merlin for Morgana turning evil... If the main excuse is the poisoning moment, let's explain it.
1. Merlin didn't have time to explain to Morgana what he was up to, because he would sort of expose himself. The whole castle was asleep and Merlin was also feeling sleepy, so he had to act between two options: Kill one person and save the whole city or let Camelot be seiged.
2. When Merlin and Morgana were being chased by that Black Knight, we notice that the Knight eventually doesn't strike Morgana. Which proves that Morgana is involved in the sleep curse and what Morgause has done.
3. So, according to point 2, Merlin could rightfully suspect that Morgana willingly (or not) started working with Morgause against the Crown. Which is something she tried to do in s1 as well (Alvarr).
Apart from the poisoning scene, Merlin DIDN'T owe ANYONE (not just Morgana) a secret that could get him killed (if we put the status and the origin from another kingdom). Especially when he constantly gets told by the lizard and Gaius (someone his own mother trusts) that he needs to keep it to himself. Also, most of the people (not sure about the number) who knew found out accidentally. And even those that Merlin told himself were not very likely to rat him out (Freya) and he did it because they were as unprotected as himself (Arthur was a special case). If he couldn't tell his secret to GWEN, the most trustworthy person on this Earth, how was he supposed to tell Morgana, an extremely bold person?
Additionally, let's not forget that there were other factors that played their roles in Morgana's change of character:
1. Uther with his laws, authority, abuse and lies about her parentage
2. Gaius with his method of sedating her and making her feel like crazy
3. Morgause with her manipulation and their blood relation
4. And eventually, MORGANA HERSELF! Yes, she went through a lot, but in the end, SHE CHOSE! She made up her mind and did things only because of hatred and because she felt entitled to a throne that WASN'T rightfully hers (mind you, she was biologically illegitimate, legally she was daughter of Gorlois) just so that a commoner (Gwen) wouldn't be Queen (She said something about it to Agravaine).
To summarise, Merlin WASN'T at fault for something that would have happened sooner or later. All that Merlin did was SPEED UP the events. Morgana would have turned evil, even if Merlin didn't exist at all.
