When You Least Expect It. Probably Late March
reblog for happiness to come for you in late march!
I reblogged this last year and I hung out with blink-182 backstage on March 30. Reblogging again because it worked the first time.
honestly, last year one of the best days of my life happened in late March
Can't remember what happened in march last year but i have exams soon
Bitches love to be like "science sucks where are the eldritch horrors where is the knowledge thats maddening to know" that's thermodynamics motherfucker. The first two world experts in thermodynamics (Ludwig Boltzmann and Paul Ehrenfest) both killed themselves because they had to do fucking thermodynamics
Oh you want to use abstract methodology poorly-understood by most to study something so alien to human existence it cannot be intuitively understood, then in doing so uncover a terrible truth that implies the unavoidable doom of all humanity? Nice going dingdong you just found out about entropy
I dont know if entropy is necessarily alien to our existence the methods used to study it are definitely abstract enough that its difficult to comprehend what theyre telling you since theyre trying to be universally applicable. But the basic idea that the disorder of the universe is always increase is not foreign its an integral part of our everday existence if a not directly obvious one but we see examples of entropy everywhere such as whenever you make a cup of tea.
I wouldn't necessarily agree. Consider the Kelvin-Planck statement: “It is impossible to construct a device which operates on a cycle and produces no other effect than the production of work and the transfer of heat from a single body”. Can you intuitively explain why entropy leads to this restriction, recalling that quasistatic reversible closed cycles, without entropy increase by definition, are readily permitted by thermodynamics?
A perfectly reversible cycle happens through the sum of an infinite number of steps if each step takes a finite amount of time then it would take a literal eternity. Only moments of infinitesimal duration could be added infinitely within the confines of a finite time but time is not made of instants it has a discrete minumum duration and consists only in change so anyone who thinks about zeno's paradox could get an intuitive feeling for why this shouldn't work.
If you think specifically about a piston being pushed by the thermal expansion of a combusting air fuel mixture theres nothing mysterious about the piston only being able to recapture a fraction of the energy and so if that work was somehow diverted to restoring the original conditions there'd always be loss due to friction and random heating most people can get that without trouble. That's not formulated as a rigorous proof in the abstract that this fact applies under all conceivable circumstances but I was never really objecting to the abstract being hard to conceptualize.
Since the former statement is equivalent to the following "It is impossible to construct a device which operates on a cycle and whose sole effect is the transfer of heat from a cooler body to a hotter body." Rephrased like that it's now really intuitive why it wouldn't work heat doesn't spontaneously flow "uphill" since the average motion of particles is inherently chaotic unless some external force directed it how could that result in an ordered energy transfer from cold to hot?
You've missed the point. Entropy leads to this conclusion even with quasistatic reversible processes. That's why I specified their presence.
If entropy was nothing more than dissipative forces and chaos, it wouldn't be too hard to understand, but even quasistatic heat engines work at or below the Carnot efficiency. There's something more to the concept that's not addressable in these terms. In the case of the quasistatic engine (working below the Carnot efficiency), entropy increase in the universe occurs over the heat transfer between reservoirs, with negative entropy change as heat is removed from the hot reservoir being eclipsed by a larger positive change as heat is deposited in the cold reservoir.
That being said, we're both missing a more important point - whether it's intuitive in general. You understand entropy, as do I. But can a layperson intuit that there is an increase in entropy in the surroundings of a quasistatic heat engine from the heat flow between reservoirs? Does this make much sense to anyone else reading this?
wasn’t economics the one that makes you go mad? like in a different way.
What for? There's no knowledge substantial enough taught over the course of an economics degree to be worth going insane over, and there's no way in hell their workload is more than ours either

I think it would be very funny for like characters in a fantasy setting to walk into a pub and try to order and the bartender sighs and goes "species and age?" While pulling out a massive book holding the drinking age for every type of species capable of purchasing alcohol

No, I am not kidding, Cosmo and Wanda canonically started WWI.
Can someone explain exactly how MaryAnn caused the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand? Like what did she wish for.
Mary Ann, bored at school: "Cosmo, I wish European politics were more interesting."
