july is disability pride month. it is also summer in the northern hemisphere, and this summer we have seen record breaking hot temperatures across the globe. it might be apt to remember that disabled people are a population vulnerable to extreme weather, and significantly more at risk of death or health issues during a heatwave. "the global mortality rate of people with disabilities in natural disasters is up to four times higher than people without disabilities." (source). disability may increase the relative risk of a heatwave more than old age, socioeconomic status, and being outdoors (source). even in the places most affected by the rising heat, disabled people are barely included in action plans for public safety, if at all (source). global warming is a an issue that affects a wide range of people, but let's not forget it is also a disability rights issue

The KIDS act (which contains KOSA) passed the US house, so I would recommend calling your senators and telling them to vote in opposition. I don't think I need to stress the importance of being able to use the internet freely and without privacy barriers being breached.

There are many scripts online you can follow, many ways to tweak your message to fit your senator (ESPECIALLY if they are up for reelection this year). Whether it's a recording you reach or a real person, be straightforward, don't argue, just let your rep know that you are a constituent and you oppose the KIDS act, etc.

Here is where you can search for your senator... call, email, fax, bring them physical letters, show up in person to their offices if you are able.

Is anyone else constantly bothered by the fact that all of a child's medical care is required to go through their parents? That they must rely on these people to decide when they do or don't need medical care?

No matter how injured. If a parent doesn't deem it necessary to see a doctor, it doesn't happen. Teachers can suggest a doctor visit, but unless it's a very acute injury (and even then), it's ultimately up to the parents.

You can be 13. Twisted, maybe broken ankle. You teacher lets you sit out in PE. She's concerned, and tells you to rest when you go home, and see a doctor. You get home, ur parents fill a bath and add some Epsom salts, and then laugh at you for using it moms old colorguard stick as a cane. Take some ibuprofen they say. It's just a little sprain, ur a kid.

You go to school the next day, go to ur office assistant time. Office calls ur mom to come get you, because you're clearly in too much pain for school. Your mom laughs when she gets you, says you just were so determined not to miss school. Scolds you for making the office ladies worry.

You never see a doctor for the injury.

Your parents come into the exam room at every visit. This does not stop with age, except for gynecologist. But your parents are on the medical release forms. They fill them out for you, with you. You do not get to take them off.

You never get to tell s doctor about the ankle. Even though it never quote healed right, and it hurts every day.

Then your 18. In college. Still on your parents insurance, and have no car. The on campus clinic only does std testing. You fall down some stairs. Same injury. You call your parents, crying from the pain. You are using a mop as a cane. They console you and say to have a bath, take some meds, and let them know how it feels in a few days. You end up borrowing your roommates rolling chair to get around for the weekend.

By Monday, you can walk again. You walk miles to class every day. You ask to see a doctor, but your parents won't drive the hour to come take you, and you don't have the insurance card. You are still at their mercy for medical care. The ankle tries to heal again. This time worse than before. The tendons click with every step.

Now you're in your twenties. Finally have your own healthcare. You see a doctor. You get to mention the ankle! They say it's been too long to really even know what was damaged. That you have arthritis now. It healed wrong but it can no longer be fixed.

I'm 32 now. My ankle tells me the weather. I wear boots to keep it stable. What could have been a funny story about a fall and a cast has become a lifetime injury. Because children do not have access to medical care without a parents approval.

A letter to the teen who can't transition yet

"An article can’t change the world, and the world feels pretty bleak at the moment. Besides, you know what’s going on: you’re taking in the news (or as much of it as you can handle at a time), and you know that it sucks and it’s sucked for a while now and it probably will suck for a while still. You don’t need someone you don’t even know to tell you that. So instead, I offer this letter against the current moment, in hope of providing some words that help, or at least make you feel less alone.

I’m writing to you as a trans person who’s seen a lot in my relatively short time on this earth. I came out⁠ to everyone in my life in 2010, a little bit after my 18th birthday, and before many people had heard of the transgender⁠ “issue.” In secret and in private, I had been trans and online for a long time before that, haunting forums and poky little bespoke websites, sharing with a few very trusted friends, and knew absolutely no other trans people IRL."

Since coming out in 2010, Liz Duck-Chong has helped build trans health services, supported LGBTQIA+ youth orgs, written resources, and connected with trans folks around the world. Today she’s sharing ways to make meaning in dark times, so we can hold onto the threads and together keep knitting the future we know is possible.

Here's a few of her words of wisdom:

1. Find your people. First off, we don’t have to go it alone.

When I was struggling to know who to trust and where to be myself, I found I had three categories of people in my life:

People I was honest with but who didn’t have enough information to harm me, such as people online who I was a girl with, but who didn’t know my name or where I lived

People I lied to so they couldn’t out or harm me, which were most of the people I knew IRL

People I was honest with and trusted them to look after me, like a best friend or a blood relative who’s a steadfast ally⁠.

Having these groups in mind helped me to make immediate decisions about where I could share information and still be safe, like how I was able to be myself online as long as I was using a different name and not sharing anything identifiable. Your people could look like friends IRL, or on Scarleteen, Discord or somewhere else online, it might be family members, the relatives of a friend you know, fellow gamers, or a pen pal.

2. Find the safe places to be yourself in. While the increasing reach of fascists can make it harder to feel safe to be ourselves in public, they can’t take away our ability to know who we are and to be that self in private. This might be in your own home, whether around trusted friends and family or in private; it could be online, talking to friends or strangers (like in the community spaces here). Maybe it’s playing a game as a character that feels closer to how you want to be, or in a written form, like in a diary or private blog. Whatever it is, having an outlet to be yourself can make the times you aren’t able to be just a bit easier to bear.

3. Find trusted information networks. Trans people have always found ways of sharing information, even in the most restrictive and risky circumstances, because there is a truth in us that will always be there. This information has been hard to access in the past—from paper copies of zines or letters, from the occasional medical publication, and by word of mouth.

If you haven’t come across a trusted source before, you’re in luck: you’re reading one right now! I really recommend looking up zines and other publications by and for trans people, which are more accessible than ever online. Some favourite topics of mine include comprehensive hormones information, sexy sex ed, trans dating and blogs or personal essays about why being trans is cool and hot.

4. Look to those who’ve come before. At my darkest moments, when it all feels at its most hopeless, I always turn to our histories. Despite everything, trans people have existed for as long as humans have (which is a really bloody long time).

I really encourage you to read things about and by the trans people that came before us, and in particular to people who lived and loved and fought in the same part of the country or world as you. If you can find copies, try Susan Stryker’s Transgender History, Leslie Feinberg’s Transgender Warriors, and Kit Heyam’s Before We Were Trans, and round it out with the beautiful I Hope We Choose Love by Kai Cheng Thom—if you’re taken with any of them in particular, hit the reference list and keep reading!

5. Make plans for the future. For me, this was the hardest part, the part that hurt the most, and also the part that allowed me to survive.

Landmark German ruling declares Google's AI Overviews are Google's own words and makes it liable for false answers

A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou

This is HUGE.

1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.

2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.

3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."

4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.

TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.

This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.

This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).

Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct

Algorhithms always replicate the biases of their creators, whether they're created by engineers or trained on mass user data. It's like crash test dummies always being shaped by men - the data put in gets extrapolated out far beyond what might be expected. The problem isn't new, it's just much much bigger now.

A book I found really helpful in learning about this (in 2023, before the glut of AI we're now drowning in) is Hello World: Being Human in the Age of Algorhithms by Hannah Fry. She looks into a world that in 2018 also had huge swaths of society - healthcare, transportation, crimes, and commerce - already being run by software.
