@feministofthewatertribe
sorry i’m having some narnia thoughts idk
because ok. most tepid take of the year: narnia isn’t a “world” in the way that, for example, middle-earth is a world. it’s more like an ad hoc playground with different pieces that keep getting added to it.
and like. the “character journeys,” as we’d call them now, are pretty thin by our current standards? like, the shit that the kids go thru just on-page (not even counting the implied backdrop of WW2 and post WW2 England) is pretty traumatic if u think about it for a second, but it doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on them. like, you as the reader can logically guess that it’s there, but there’s almost nothing in the text that actually demonstrates that emotionally.
and none of this is a dig, btw, but i think jack lewis just wasn’t the kind of author who, like, thought about what he was writing all that much?? which is an energy i respect, honestly, because who would throw bacchus & maenads, santa claus, and werewolves all into the same story if they Thought About It?
anyway all of that is just to say: i don’t wanna invalidate ppl who get emotional catharsis out of Wrestling With The Problem Of Susan, or What It Says About Jack Lewis. i guess i’m just saying that i don’t think he Thought About It when he decided to pull something on her that is objectively Super Fucking Traumatic.
because this is the same world in which a kid can come within an inch of being fucking murdered by a witch and can still sleep at night afterwards. this is a same world where two teenage boys can end up in a life threatening battle with no real preparation and then just kinda shake it off later. this is the same world where two teenage girls can watch a person they know get ritualistically murdered and be completely devastated by it … and then there’s never a peep about nightmares afterward. (i mean for crying out loud, lucy encounters the actual knife that killed aslan and her reaction is basically “oh look, a relic from that thing i was present for!”)
this is a world where a kid can grow up under fairly extreme emotional neglect, not to mention having to run for his life because the people who were supposed to be his guardians intended to kill him, not to mention finding out that those “guardians” are the reason he’s an orphan … and then he just kinda rolls into adulthood like it’s all well n good.
like okay. yeah susan got the worst of it, but it does kinda fit with the way lewis treats these characters generally. like what do you mean these characters would be Super Mega Affected by things that happen to them??
Howl truly is the man of all time. He’s a playboy. He’s a malewife. He fell in love with a ninety year old woman. He’s a rugby player. He smells like hyacinths. He’s not a natural blond. When dying his hair went slightly wrong, he filled his home with slime. He has a PhD. He’s a wizard. He found a way to another universe and he told absolutely nobody about it. He makes video games about the magical universe for his nephews. He can’t play the guitar. He always takes a guitar with him when he’s trying to seduce a woman. He’s a self-proclaimed coward. He got drunk to trick himself into doing something dangerous. He overcharges for his services to rich people. He undercharges for his services to poor people. A woman invaded his home and declared herself his cleaning lady and he just let her stay. He loves spiders. He lies about his surname to everyone, including royalty. The true spelling of his first name is Howell, but we don’t find out until halfway through the book because the POV character thinks it’s spelled Howl. He’s even Welsh.
There should be a shop where they have a boob scanner which 3D prints the perfect bra for you.

nobody warns you this but addiction happens without you noticing and one of the first things that it attacks is your ability to care. if you find yourself using recreational drugs every day, stop and take one day a week sober. if you struggle with this or if you don't see the point of the exercise, you are likely already addicted and you need help.
nobody ever taught me the warning signs for drug addiction, only that "it costs lots of money and destroys your life!!!1" which is not helpful if you can't recognize a developing addiction in yourself.
so here's some things to watch out for with recreational drug use:
planning your day around drugs e.g "i'll give myself an extra half hour before heading out so i can get high first"
rapidly switching emotions around drugs. you love them but you hate that you love them so much. you hate the way you feel on them but you hate being sober. feeling guilty after using even when you didn't give a crap beforehand.
caring less about spending money. if you are budgeting for drugs like they are food, you are likely prioritizing them more than is healthy.
getting high to do household chores and other unpleasant things because it would suck less and be more bearable on drugs
feeling anxious or restless while sober, not knowing what to do with oneself, feeling lost or ungrounded.
thinking about doing drugs constantly even while sober. maybe it's the first thing you think of when you wake up. maybe when you're bored or otherwise have free time, drugs are one of the first things you can think of to occupy yourself with.
going to work or school while under the influence, especially if it happens regularly and if you're seeing your performance suffer as a result.
the idea of taking a 'tolerance break' sounds good to you until it's actually break time, at which point you can come up with 20 very reasonable sounding points to explain why it wouldn't benefit you actually and you should just keep doing drugs regardless.
even if you succeed at quitting the drug, you keep your dealer's number on your phone "just in case"
you pretend to be sober when you aren't. you worry about other people noticing how much time you spend high. you make efforts to hide your drug use or minimize how much other people think you're using. you're scared of other people's judgement if they were to find out.
you have mood swings laced with self-hatred, regret, financial worries, and guilt. these mood swings are then very quickly wiped away by feelings of "but it doesn't matter, i can do what i want, and clearly i'm doing just fine while using drugs frequently". news flash, if you are rapidly switching between feeling numb-ok and hating yourself more than anything because of your drug use, you are mentally ill.
yes this applies to weed. weed is a drug and you can get addicted to it like any other substance. addiction is not the same as physical dependence; it is psychological and it can happen to anyone. you are not immune to addiction.
reject booktok culture. go to the library and get a weird little novel you’ve never heard of in your life and read it all in 2 days like god intended.
this too tbh
this is my favorite tweet of all time
Brooklyn Nine Nine (2013-2021) Det. Dave Majors (S02E21)
“Omg Jenna Ortega is so dedicated and talented she learned German, the cello, stayed up for two nights in a row to choreograph a dance, and filmed all while she had Covid!”
No. All of that doesn’t make her dedicated and talented, it makes her a victim of abuse and poor working conditions. Is she talented and dedicated? Yes. But it’s not because she pushed her body beyond what it was meant to do while also suffering from a potentially deadly virus.
It’s Millie Bobby Brown passing out mid-scene all over again, and it’s continuing to be praised instead of looking at Netflix and holding them accountable for abusing their employees. Not to mention, if this is happening to the stars of their respective shows, what do you think is happening to the rest of the cast and crew who don’t have the star power to address what’s happening to them?
getting really invested in a netflix show is like reading a book but every time you turn the page to a new chapter there’s a fifty percent chance that the entire rest of the book is blank. this goes up to ninety-five percent if the last chapter had two women kissing
Guys, we’re saved! I see… a cactus…
here’s the thing, gentiles. there is pretty much no “critique” of judaism you can make that a jew hasn’t already made.
“circumcision is bad!!!!!!!!”
plenty of jews agree and have been wrestling with this practice for decades.
“the bible says being queer is bad!!!!!!!!!”
these verses have been torn to shreds by jews for decades if not centuries. i know dozens of queer rabbis, and most of my friends are queer jews. my rabbi has a trans kid and frequently goes to our state capitol to yell at the government for being transphobic.
“what even is the point of keeping kosher!!!!!!!!!!”
we have entire books written about this and discuss it frequently.
“but israel!!!!!!”
congrats! ur just antisemitic.
in conclusion, there is no Hot Take you as a non jew can have abt judaism and jews that hasn’t already been discussed to death by jews. your dumb one liner has already been pondered for 200 years by a bunch of nerds in kippot on a tuesday afternoon. your revolutionary opinion is old news. you are boring. make some jewish friends and learn something.
So my Jewish friend showed me the Talmud, and, not even kidding, it's like the old Tumblr nested reblogs, but in print.
Gentiles discovering Talmud like this because of the ways it’s like the internet is unironically and wholeheartedly one of my favorite intercultural things. <3

“The knowledge that they might never see each other again, that some of them—maybe all of them—might not survive this night hung heavy in the air.” SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo
People died. Innocent people died Granda. And they were someone’s mother, father, daughter, son. Nothing can ever make that ok. And the people who took those lives, they’re just gonna walk free.
