…you show your work in math not so the teacher can give partial credit, but so that the teacher can see how you reasoned it out and pinpoint where errors occurred. 

You don’t do different methods of solving because teachers are following some latest fad but because mental flexibility and number sense are important and you build those by solving problems in different ways and growing an intuitive understanding of how numbers work together. That way when you encounter math in the wild, you don’t have to recognize the sort of problem and recall a half-forgotten formula. Instead you can see the numbers and what you’re hoping to learn and put them together until the answer makes sense. 

Like. There’s reasons schools do this shit and it isn’t because liberals are taking over or the school is getting paid or teachers like busy work or anything like that.

Only learning one way of doing something and having to remember a dozen formulae does not work. I wish people would stop trouncing on anything that varies from that just because it is different or they don’t understand why it is being done that way.

The problem I had with this is that when I was little I could often do complex calculations in my head but writing was very hard and often hurt, so “show your work” meant switching brain modes from intuitive math to holding a pencil and I often couldn’t do them at the same time. The answer should not have been forcing me to show work on paper, but having me explain out loud, because I absolutely could explain my work, but writing long winded anything hurt so much that I failed second grade English for refusing to copy out sentences and just dropping the punctuation into the example.

I stopped having this trouble when computers became an option.

If a kid has the right answer and can explain how they got there but fails at writing it down, what you have is not a stubborn kid with bitchy parents but a kiss who may need adaptive supports to focus on the subject at hand.

This sounds like you were dealing with a disability that the school should have diagnosed and accommodated? Whether physical or something like dysgraphia.

Obviously, if a student has a specific problem with writing things out, that should be taken into account. They should have accommodations that help them get around that.

But in general the OP is 100% right. For 90+% of students, learning to write out the steps and learning several ways of getting to the answer will lead to deeper understanding and better number sense, which will benefit them in the long run.

Also, note that gifted students and students who are specifically really good at math often find it super annoying to have to write things out like this, and to learn multiple ways of doing it. Because they can make those intuitive jumps in their head easily. But research - on gifted students specifically - shows that if you let them go along like that, eventually when they get to something that they can’t do intuitively they crash and burn real fast because they never stopped to figure out what it was they were doing “intuitively” in their head, and never developed the skills needed to work things out step-by-step. They will find it to be a huge pain in the ass, because why won’t you let them just do it, but in the long run it’s building skills that they’re eventually gonna need.
