How about (fanon?) Endgame steve realizing just how much Steve's words had affected tony, just how MUCH tony had NEEDED him and just how much he had failed to fulfill his promise of 'together' TONY RIPPED HIS HEART OUT, GRABBED STEVE'S HAND AND PLACED IT INTO HIS WARM PALM Sorry, I just have a lot of emotions
oh, there’s nothing fanon about that. that’s all canon, pal. i hope you were aiming for a full-on analysis because that’s what you’re about to get. put y’all seatbelts on!
right off the bat you can see the hesitation on steve’s face. sure, they had spoken when tony first landed – and everything had seemed fine and dandy then – but in that moment, it had been literally a life or death situation. it had been about being glad the other was still alive. now, though, it’s time for a real conversation and steve knows things are most likely about to get ugly. he’s trying to thread through this as carefully as possible.
you can see steve’s uneasiness in the way it takes him just a second longer than usual to meet tony’s eyes. you can argue that he’s being mindful because of what tony had just been through, but i believe it’s both. as much as i love cap, i think we call all agree that he’s not the most tactful person. the mission always comes first.
tony goes on a rant about how thanos wiped his face with a planet and we can see exactly that, steve worried about the mission. he’s clearly, gradually losing his patience.
(i just realized this is gonna feature way too many gifs and i’m sorry, but i really wanted to include tony’s [fart noise] scene because he’s so beyond caring. it’s hilarious (and by that i mean heartbreaking)).
i don’t think steve doesn’t care about what happened on titan. he cares, but there’s nothing he can do about that now. what he can do, however, is find out everything he can about the fucker and kill him – which would be so much easier if tony would just, yk, focus and give him the information he needs. so that’s what steve does. he asks tony to focus. and that’s when the scene does a complete 180º.
tony answers steve’s request with a flying kick to the face.
and steve is reminded of why he should be threading through this carefully.
(again, including this just so we can all appreciate RDJ’s oscar-worthy performance)
i wish i could include the sound of steve’s voice here, because he sounds wrecked. he’s grasping at straws here. yes, ultron had been a disaster, no one can argue that, but that’s not the point tony is making and steve is well aware of that.
i don’t need to say anything about this. just watch steve swallowing that hard pill (and his jaw doing the Thing™️)
steve is so taken aback by tony’s aggressiveness (believe me, i know how ridiculous this sounds when he was the one that literally rammed his shield into tony’s arc reactor).
anyways, so that’s the face a man makes when he feels the weight of all his mistakes finally setting upon his shoulders.
