I love how from the beginning, Castiel is doing things that he hasn't been told to do. He questions why Dean thinks he doesn't deserve to be saved. In fact, Castiel is often asking about Dean's emotional state and seems genuinely curious how he is feeling. He lets Dean know what the real mission was in "It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester" and confesses to him that he has doubts sometimes. He accepts Sam's handshake even though he literally calls him "the boy with the demon blood." He defends humanity to Uriel.

Castiel isn't in every episode of Season 4, but every episode that he is in, you can see both how he evolves as a character, but also the inherent curiosity and rebelliousness that has been in him from the beginning.

and those things are all true about cas btw!

but dean is obsessed with him and thinks other people should also be obsessed with him so he tailors his descriptions accordingly.
