the fallen
Luke says âI have to save youâ and Anakin says âyou already haveâ and I think itâs more than just a metaphor for how the return of his conscience mattered more than his life
Anakin remembers holding his mother as she died, and he remembers thinking âI have to save youâ and not being able to because it was too late. He remembers what came after. He remembers kneeling at her grave and saying, âI wasnât strong enough to save you. But I promise. I will not fail again.â He remembers what that determination not to fail turned into.
He knows Luke cares strongly about his family bonds, just like Anakin did. He knows this because Luke was determined to reach out to him, to see the good in him, to talk to the person whose name is Anakin rather than the slave to the emperor.
He knows he is going to die and he doesnât want Luke to walk away feeling guilt and failure because of that loss. He doesnât want Luke to feel as though he should have been strong enough to save him. Maybe it would have been a problem, maybe it wouldnât have, but Anakin isnât taking any chances. If his last act is to save his son, it wonât just be from death at the hands of the emperor, but from the horrible sense that he should have been able to do more to save his father, and the fear and need for control that Anakin knows can follow.
So Luke says âI have to save you.â And Anakin knows those words, heâs said them just as earnestly, and Luke is too pure of heart for what Anakin remembers that belief turning into inside of him, and he says, âyou already have.â Not that he needs to let him go or that life isnât what matters or that he needs to focus on saving himself or his friends, but that he has succeeded and therefore should feel no guilt in this loss.
And regardless of whether Luke becoming obsessive over saving those he cared about was actually in danger of becoming an issue, I think all of that is resting behind Anakinâs eyes as he says those words to his son before his death.
#INCREDIBLE?????#friendly reminder what a terrible thing this relationship is in canon i mean DAMN HE DOESNâT EVEN LOOK ANAKIN IN THE EYE#BEFORE HE SLAPS HIM LIKE THAT sooooo let me tell you iâve always been beside myself over this scene because it shows obi wanâs#loyalty that never changes not even throughout mustafar maybe never??? being to the jedi order#(he still guides luke to BECOME THE JEDI to bring the order back to glory itâs lukeâs decision LUKE ALONE#to use his training in bringing back his father maybe it was obi wanâs purpose all along#become what i could not and guide him home but when it mattered when it truly mattered#HE WAS THIS #HE CHOSE THE ORDER AND HE WAS NOT THERE FOR HIM TO THE POINT OF ANAKIN#NOT BEING ABLE TO TRUST AND OPEN UP AND TALK TO HIM ABOUT THINGS THAT DESTROYED HIM IN THE END#and i donât give a frick about OBI WANâS CONDITIONING and ppl defending him with the arguments#how he was drilled into this kind of obedienceâŠ.#no time for obi wanâs apologists yapping about this poor sad soul to be quite honest with you OBI WAN WAS A PERFECT JEDI#AND THERE IS NOTHING MORE DEMEANING BUT BEING THIS SLAVE OF CONDITIONING TBH#but what i want to rant about is WHAT THIS SCENE SAYS ABOUT ANAKIN :-(((( after deception this happens#heâs denied the status and then heâs being made into a spy TO PROVE HIMSELF STILL PROVE HIMSELF#TO BE WORTHY OF THE STATUS OF THEIR RESPECT like he didnât do it by being most efficient general in this war AT THE AGE OF 22??#and obi wan is the one who tells him this#i had to make you think iâm dead FOR THE SCHEME TO WORK i have to ask you to commit treason TO BE THE MASTER IN OUR EYES???#anakin still does it anakin still forgives him HARDEEN anakin still says yes here#(BECAUSE ITâS OBI WAN WHOâS ASKING BECAUSE ITâS OBI WAN WHO TRUSTS THIS PLOT TO WORK#BECAUSE ITâS OBI WAN PERIOD itâs anakin he loses temper over meaningless things#THE IDEAL SCENARIO WOULD BE HIM PUNCHING OBI WAN HERE AND NOT TALKING TO HIM EVER AGAIN until obi wan comes back crawling#begging for forgiveness how much it hurts anakin how much it enrages him how much it makes him want to JUST LEAVE DO YOU THINK????)#(HE DIDNâT AFTER AHSOKA HE WONâT NOW because itâs obi wan ASKING HIM in the name of the council BUT ITâS HIM#AND ANAKIN WILL DO EVERYTHING FOR OBI WAN ;-////// which cannot be said about obi wan at all)#this is literally the worst relationship crap ever i donât have time for this toxicity cloud (@miliesposito)
#the truth hurts#but it has to be said#people focus only on Anakinâs betrayal#(because it is so dramatic and forms the heart of the climactic moments of the film)#and forget about what lead up to it#(the many QUIET betrayals and coerced compromises)#the point isnât to absolve Anakin of his choices#but to show that Obi-Wan is not to be absolved either#he played his part in this tragedy and he played it all too well (via @the-far-bright-center)
#we see over and over how Anakin loves with his whole heart and soul and is loyal to PEOPLE not principles#and how obi-wan even recognises it#takes it for GRANTED#but cannot reciprocate that level of PERSONAL loyalty above all#whether that is right or wrong of Obi-Wan is not the point#the point is that itâs part of the unfolding tragedy#a HUGE part of it (via @the-far-bright-center)
I agree but I always tought it was false that phrase from Obi-Wan about Anakin being âloyal to people not to principlesâ itÂŽs just another way in which Obi-Wan demeaned Anakin in the eyes of the Council.
Anakin wanted freedom for the slaves because they SHOULD be free.
Anakin helped Qui-Gon and Padme because it was the RIGHT thing to do.
Anakin decided to stay with the Jedi Order after marrying Padme because he wanted to help them achive PEACE in the galaxy and didnÂŽt want to leave them with a war on their hands.
So no Obi-wan is completely wrong here, Anakin is loyal to people and to PRINCIPLES what he isnÂŽt fully loyal to are INSTITUTIONS that fail to achieve those principles. Like the Jedi Order and the Republic, both failed the slaves on the outer rim and both failed the galaxy letting the corruption grow to the point it did.
Being loyal to a corrupt republic isnÂŽt the same as being loyal to democracy. Especially since that democracy stopped to matter many years ago in favor of helping only those rich or powerful enough to get anything done.
Anakin and Padme saw this, ObiWan did as well but he clinged to the idea of those institutions working without any reform.
ItÂŽs Obi-Wan the one who is loyal to institutions not to principles.
Hear me out: the funniest way to read the Emperor's Hand is as Darth Sidious accidentally honoring the traditions of his homeworld.
Because obviously TTT, Mara Jade, and the Emperor's Hand as a concept predate both the PT and Palpatine being from Naboo, but they're all perfectly backwards compatible.
And the Naboo handmaiden system is objectively insane.
I love it! It rules!
It is ALSO insane.
George Lucas was, as always, operating primarily on vibes and mythic imagery rather than asking uncomfortable sociological questions, but if you stop and think about the institution for more than a solid minute, it immediately starts raising eyebrows.
What kind of society elects a teenage queen and then surrounds her with a cadre of teenage noblewomen trained to impersonate her, carry weapons, participate in security operations, keep state secrets, and potentially DIE in her place?? That's not even a hypothetical, that's Cordé.
That's a state security apparatus specifically created from child soldiers wearing silk and makeup.
My favorite headcanon is that the answer lies buried in the institution itself!
Once upon a time, someone kept trying to kill the Queen.
Maybe it was rival houses. Maybe succession disputes. Maybe civil war. Doesn't really matter, the point is that Naboo's history was far uglier than its idyllic image suggests.
Eventually some desperate monarch, cornered by enemies and running out of options, came up with a brilliant solution: every major noble family would send a daughter to court. They would be honored guests publicly ... functionally they would also be hostages. They would be trained to fight, trained to serve, trained to imitate the Queen's speech and mannerisms so thoroughly that no assassin could ever be entirely certain who they were killing.
Viewed through that lens, the institution suddenly starts making a little more sense. What noble is going to sponsor a plot against the throne when the young woman wearing the crown might actually be his own daughter? Every major family now has a personal stake in the monarch's survival. The knives are still there, but now everyone has to think twice before drawing them.
Over centuries, the original purpose becomes obscured. The hostages become companions. The companions become handmaidens. The coercion gets wrapped in honor.
Which is exactly how cultural institutions survive.
And if you accept that premise, Naboo becomes a much more interesting place. Beneath the fountains and beautiful architecture is a society that normalized masks, doubles, hidden identities and carefully managed appearances.
The Queen pretends to be a handmaiden.
The handmaiden pretends to be the Queen.
Political survival depends on controlling appearances.
Which is EXACTLY THE CULTURE that should produce a Sith Lord in the exact flavor of Darth Sidious.
For most Naboo, the culture of masks and doubles becomes a defensive adaptation; for Palpatine, it becomes a worldview. The future Emperor spends decades pretending to be a kindly public servant while secretly engineering galactic catastrophe. He presents himself as a grandfatherly statesman while running the largest conspiracy in galactic history. He doesn't reject Naboo's political culture; he internalizes it and weaponizes it. Which is extremely Sith.
And then we get to the handmaidens themselves.
Because I am convinced that Senator Palpatine watched the events of TPM unfold and took notes.
Imagine him sitting there watching a bunch of fourteen-year-old girls with blasters repeatedly interfere with his plans.
Not just the Jedi or elite soldiers or master spies.
Handmaidens.
Loyal. Adaptable. Good at disguises. Comfortable with deception. Willing to risk their lives for the person they serve. Every time one of Padmé's girls successfully pulls off another switcheroo or security operation, Palpatine's reaction isn't just annoyance but professional admiration.
Somewhere in the back of his mind there has to be a moment of: I want one.
Not a handmaiden, exactly. That's too obviously Naboo. But the concept? The concept is excellent.
Fast forward a few decades!
Palpatine is Emperor now. He takes the idea apart and rebuilds it according to Sith principles.
He keeps the loyalty. He keeps the secrecy. He keeps the personal service and the ability to operate independently. He keeps the willingness to sacrifice everything for the person at the center of the system. Then he strips away the humanity and replaces it with possession. He adds espionage, assassination, manipulation, and dark side conditioning.
Hmm, needs less sisterhood and more murder.
The result of course is Mara Jade.
At some point he absolutely had to workshop the title.
"Emperor's Handmaiden?"
No. Too obvious.
"Emperor's Hand."
Perfect, print it.
Everything gets scaled up, militarized, stripped of its humanity, and rebuilt in obsidian.
Which feels phenomenally appropriate for the dark side. Sith don't invent things from whole cloth. They corrupt, distort, and take something that already exists and twist it into a more selfish, controlling form.
And that's exactly what Palpatine does with Naboo. For all his claims of transcending ordinary beings, for all his efforts to become something greater than human, he never really stops being a product of his homeworld.
He just takes every institution he inherited and asks himself what the most evil possible version would look like.
The final irony is Mara herself.
Because in this reading she's the dark reflection of a Naboo handmaiden. She is the culmination of Palpatine's attempt to recreate and weaponize one of the defining institutions of his youth.
She's like the cultural fusion of Naboo and Sith cultures. Culturally orange chicken.
And after all that effort, after decades of planning and conditioning and control, she eventually defects, marries Luke Skywalker, and gets absorbed into the very family that destroys everything Palpatine built.
That's Star Wars AF.
DEATCHMENT VS COMPASSION
This is a post about my own pov so take it with a grain of salt. I will involve some canon elements but itÂŽs mostly my own oppion.
So you know how fandom since the prequels and even in disney canon get out of their way to talk about how "attachment" was AnakinÂŽs downfall and he just didnÂŽt get Jedi Philosophy and while I believe some fans addresing this from the real world budist philosophy is interesting, I donÂŽt believe this really plays a big part in the narrative of star wars the way George Lucas showed in his movies.
I donÂŽt believe PTJedi practice what they preach, they seem to just exchange their family bond/attachment to the whole order, which makes sense from the natural pov, all of us need to form bonds between each other as part of our need for survival and healthy development and after being taken from their biological family is only natural for Jedi to form a similar bond to their master, padawans and the rest of the members in the Jedi Order.
My only pet peeve about this is the fact they pretend they DONÂŽT DO IT to oursiders, thay act as if they only care for the "greater good" and use it to signal Anakin as the "black sheep" because he apparently canÂŽt practice "Jedi Deatchment" because Anakin REMEMBERS life outside the Jedi order, remembers his mother, his friends and wants to help them but according to the Jedi Council, this will only lead him to "darkness" so he needs to "let go" of his mother, who is a slave with a bomb in her dody, left to the whims of their master on Tatooine. and once she is dead, they make Anakin rescue and take care of the Son of the guy who keeps slavery system on Tatooine and used to own him, because Anakin needs to show them how "detached" he has become.
Anakin canÂŽt do this easily but he tries for the sake of becoming a Jedi because he is a 9 years old child and wants to trust his heros who he believes canÂŽt do no wrong and donÂŽt make mistakes but he still loves Shmi and wants her to be safe but thatÂŽs a big no, no because his mother has the flaw of NOT BEING PART of the Jedi Order.
They see this as attachment and unconsciously, mark Anakin as a "not quite order member" giving him a feeling of isolation from the rest of the Jedi Order, with some exceptions like ObiWan and Ahsoka. He is constantly judged by other Jedi for not being "deatched enough" and my problem with this is that they donÂŽt do the same between each other inside the Jedi Order, they only expect Anakin to do it.
If you donÂŽt believe me lest see some Jedi reactions to their teachers, friends, padawans loss.
Example 1: Obi-Wan.
See Obi-Wan has just lost his master Qui-Gon, the guy who has been in charge of guiding him on his formative years, he has just being killed by Maul and according to Jedi PT philosophy he should just "let it go" have patience and capture Maul so they can discover who his master is for the greater good.
But Obi-Wan, oh right, he decides to cut darth maul in anger, ok, fine, the rest of the Jedi are ok with that. Ok.
Example 2: Count Dooku
Then we have Qui-Gon Jinns master, Count Dooku, he doesnÂŽt just feels deeply bad for losing his padawan, he believes this is a good reason as any to fall to the darkside and start a war conquering galaxy civil war that will bring death to millions and destroy whole planets but thatÂŽs ok, because itÂŽs for the greater good.
Example 3: Master Windu
Then we have Master Mace Windu, the strongest Jedi around, his control over himself is extraordinary, still he decides itÂŽs to end a duel with a bunty hunter taking his head off in front of his Son inatead of you know, using his force powers to capture him and find out about what his bosses are planning, maybe he was a little mad at seeing all the Jedi killed that day. Who knows?
Example 3: Master Yoda
Master Yoda, the heart of the Jedi Order philosophy, in this same movie, he told Anakin he should be happy for losing his loved ones and not miss them because they just joined the force. But when he feels his whole order dying all over the galaxy, his first action isnÂŽt to be happy over seeing so many Jedi join the force, his first action is to take off the heads of the soldiers sent to kill him, soldiers he knows were clones with a chip on their heads to make them more obedient to the jedi order, he doesnÂŽt wonder about this, he doensÂŽt ask them what happened, he just kills them.
All of this doesnÂŽt mean I believe the Jedi should not defend themselves or that they deserved Order 66 but it does bring the question of "why react so strongly when you are supposed to be detached anyway and only care for the greater good of all beings" when itÂŽs about fellow order members but you can pefectly practice it when itÂŽs about "outsiders" like AnakinÂŽs Mom or Anakin himself.
Imo Anakin probably would have made Obi-Wan understand how he felt about his Mom if he just told him,
"Imagine Master Qui-Gon being taken by the Sith and forced to serve them or being blown off with a bomb, they may even just blown him off when they are bored and donÂŽt have anything else to do and itÂŽs funny to see him explode. You can save him but you are told you canÂŽt do anything because you will fall to the darkside if you do it, then you decide to get back for him 10 years later and you find out he was slowly killed by torture in the space of a month just because they could get away with it and for no particular reason.
THIS is what Anakin felt for the 10 years he was with the jedi order unable to help or rescue his mother just because he needed to show them he wasnÂŽt "attached" and I donÂŽt know if itÂŽs just me but I think this is unfair and also hypocritical on the Jedi Order part, especially the Council and Obi-Wan.
I also believe this is what George Lucas was getting at when he said Anakin leaving his mother unbalanced him and seeing her death brought him near the darkside and he didnÂŽt get back his footing until ROTJ.
This is also why i feel for a fallen Anakin ROTS was hard to betray the Jedi Order, but ultimately decided to do it because he could tell himself the jedi order, while important, wasnŽt more important than stopping a war affecting the entire galaxy and it wasnŽt worth Padmé or his child death so bassically Vaderkin practiced "deatachment" with the Jedi Order, sure he knew he was was taking Obi-WanŽs family away from him, even if Obi-Wan didnŽt quite use those words but if we want to get teachnical, thatŽs exactly what they did to Anakin first and he didnŽt want it to happen again. He was also in the middle of a phycothic break but I believe thatŽs why ShmiŽs death haunts the narrative in ROTS just as much as Padmé ghost does in the OT.
So in short, this is why I believe Anakin needed to be raised outside the Jedi Order just like Leia and Luke were and like Yoda decided in TPM, not because he could not "get" Jedi Philosophy or practice the greater good, he basically sacrificed his and his Mom means of being free in favor of strangers, Anakin knew that sacrificing for others was a good act and neccesary to get a more just galaxy but after 13 years of practicing "Jedi detachment" on his mother, troops and Padmé, he just lost his mind and this actually happened to quite other jedi besides him so maybe Yoda should have tought about the way they executed this particular part of their philosophy.
This is also why it will never not be funny for me to see Vader practice perfectly "Jedi detchment" as a sith. From his pov, everybody else existence isnÂŽt more important than Order in the galaxy. I donÂŽt know, I think George Lucas was getting at something there, because the pivotal part of ROTJ that saved the galaxy wasnÂŽt Jedi detachment at all, it was love and compassion, something only Anakin in the PT talked about as part of jedi philosophy. No other PT Jedi talks about this so openly.
This is also why I canŽt buy disney version of the Jedi from their series, like sorry, no, they practice "deatchment" they were not particulary compassive and that was why the entire galaxy was so convinced they were capable of killing their chancellor to take over the goverment, in fact, thatŽs precisely what Master Windu and the Council planned, the galaxy just didnŽt know it was because Palpatine was a sith but even with this fact, most of the galaxy would ask being a sith isnŽt a crime, being a traitor to the republic is and in that case, for them to act as legit authorities, they needed to involve at least Padmé group of Senators to officially accuse Palpatine of treason.
So in short my problematic oppinion is that no one in the PT truly pratices detachment the way the Jedi say they do and thatÂŽs why, at least for me, itÂŽs a waste of time to get into the whole "attached" discussion.

âThe mechanical and bio-mechanical umbilical cords attached from under the water; Anakin is wearing what is partially Darth Vader armor & partially Jedi Knight robes; his hands are crossed representing a prisoner, Padme is wearing the headpiece that she wore in the beginning of their relationship but she also has the plants and flowers in her hair from her funeral. Anakin never saw her funeral so he has no reference to dream these specific flowers, therefore, Padmeâs presence in this dream is real and not conjured from Anakin/Vaderâs subconscious.â

Watching the clone wars as a military brat, especially as someone whoâs been on a tiger cruise (take your kid to work day but itâs like a week long and on a navy ship) is surreal because itâs so accurate to military behavior.

âdarth vader built c3poâ is just one of those sentences that will NEVER stop being funny to me, cause like, it makes a lot of sense with context, but without?? imagine saying that to someone whoâs only seen, like, ANH. the badass bad guy built the anxiety droid. like, what the fuck??
âSend out a wide-band distress signal. Indicate that the Senatorâs ship encountered an unexpected meteorite cluster it could not avoid. Readings indicate that the shift shields were overridden and the ship was hulled to the point of vacating ninety-five percent of its atmosphere. Inform her father and the Senate that all aboard were killed.â
Vader casually covering up that he illegally arrested a Senator who has a diplomatic immunity seems like the most evil thing he did in the entire ANH novel. At the same time it's so mundane. That gives it that extra dose of realism.
Now I imagine Bail and Breha learning their daughter is dead. It must have been life shattering. They had the worst day of their lives as parents who lost their child and then they were blown up with Alderaan while believing Leia is dead.
Come to think of it, it can be seen as some sort of karma or payback. A lie for a lie. Vader's worst day was when he learned that Padme and his child died and Bail was one of those who made that lie. He hid Leia from her father. Now Vader unknowingly reversed the situation, inflicting the same pain of loss on Bail with the same kind of lie.
Good points. I find it interesting that Vader ordered to inform Bail right away, when he could stick just to informing the Senate - and by doing that, cover up in a better way his part in the "tragic accident" I think? Because if I were Bail and got informed about my daughter's death by anyone from 501st / Vader's men (as transmission would come from Devastator, Vader's personal flagship at that time), I would consider it a very suspicious coincidence of circumstances for Vader being in the same place where my kid died, regardless of any distress signal and technical reading. Unless this was Vader's intentional choice?
The obedience of clones - or why I dislike TCW!idea of inhibitor chip
Yes, itâs time for my another rant Legends vs new canon no one asked for. Unfortunately, itâs something that bothers me for so long, and nothing is better than actually writting it down to organize angry thoughts on the subject.
The Clone Wars put a lot of effort into humanization of clones. Itâs easy to see them as individual people, when they are visible different. Itâs not just their tatoos, scars or marks of personal choice on armors. They behave different, from Dogma (always follow orders) to Slick (âItâs the Jedi who keep my brothers enslaved.â), they are conflicted (duty vs freedom), but above everything else, they evolved through the course of series the same as the main heroes (Anakin & Ahsoka). They are also funny and brave men, always ready to fight and die for Republic and Jedi, the good guys.
Itâs not that hard to like them, right?
Even way before TCW, seeing clone troopers executing order 66 was really shocking part of Revenge of the Sith. Now, if someone (especially the younger fans) love these men in TCW, watching RotS would be upsetting even more. How so great, brave, funny men could kill their Jedi generals without second thought? So letâs be real - the inhibitor chips are excuse: clones didnât have a choice, because of inhibitor chips! Clones were forced to kill their *beloved* Jedi! Therefore, clones are victims, and no one can blame them for Order 66.
And here comes two major reasons why I dislike TCW!version:
Firstly, with chip or no, CLONES WERE VICTIMS FROM THE START, way before they were even born. CLONES WERE VICTIMS WHEN THEY EXECUTED ORDER 66 too, even if Legends!clones felt little to no regret about killing their Jedi commanders & generals. Inhibitor chip doesnât change that in any way.
Both Sith and Jedi (Republic) used clone troopers for their own purpose without any regard for life of clones or their rights. It was master Sifo-Dyas, a Jedi, who secretly purchased clone army in the first place, because he had Force vision about upcoming dark times (a vision that was ignored by Council) and clones were supposed to keep Republic alive & protected in time of need. Of course, Sith get involved, because this is what Sith do the best. For Sidious, clones were useful weapon to keep war ongoing until he had a chance to eliminate majority, if not all Jedi at once. In both cases, clones were just useful tools to achieve someone elseâs selfish plans.
In a way, I feel cheated by the idea of chips that turn people into some âprogrammedâ machines because in such way, TCW erased Jedi part in abuse & enslavement of clone troopers (Jedi didnât know about it so it must be an evil Sithâs fault, right??) while at the same time giving some, well, unrealistic as far as Iâm concerned, idea that Jedi were so liked / respected by clone troopers that these poor men suffered from nightmares about killing Jedi way before Order 66. What really undermine the whole point of Order 66 in the first place. Jedi never excepted clones to shot them in back because they were used to their unquestioned obedience from the start of war. Clone were made that way, not because of chips in brains but by genetic manipulations and years of intensive training; an indoctrination that make clone troopers believe they have obey, no matter what cost. That they grow up loyal to Republic â or they donât grow up at all.
Clones were, as far as Jedi & citizens of Republic were concerned, âbred to war, bred to discipline, bred to obey without question the orders of the powers that paid for their services [Jedi Trial].â
Clone troopers, especially those âcommonâ soldiers, believed that too. Of course, some people were terrified by such notion and some tried to teach clones that their life matter too. Some were suspicious and even unkind for clones. Some, like Yoda, were concerned about cloneâs blind obedience⊠yet never did anything about it or even worse, took it for a sign of respect for Jedi (like Luminara did: âOur safety resides in the fact that clones do obey â and they are trained to obey the Jedi. They respect us.â). Â
It was not just known âfactâ, but it was expected(!) that clones will obey all orders, and Order 66, as part of Command Code / Contingency Orders for the Grand Army of the Republic, was a legal command coming from the Supreme Leader himself:
Order 66: In the event of Jedi officers acting against the interests of the Republic, and after receiving specific orders verified as coming directly from the Supreme Commander (Chancellor), GAR commanders will remove those officers by lethal force, and command of the GAR will revert to the Supreme Commander (Chancellor) until a new command structure is established.
So, as far as clone troopers were concerned, they simply did their job. They did not need an explanation why Jedi betrayed, the same as they never asked question nor dared to undermine decisions of their Jedi generals & commanders. Supreme Commander personally ordered clone officers to execute an order and they did what they had been taught from a child: they obeyed.
Did some regretted that? Yeah. Did some didnât execute the order? A real miniority, but yes. Most did so without any second thought or regret or heartache, because most of them werenât on friendly or close terms with Jedi.
The chip-in-brain and ânightmares about killing beloved Jedi commandersâ are unrealistic for me because most of clones didnât have any close relationships with their Jedi officers. Iâm not even talking about prejudices towards clones here, but more about military hierarchy - common troopers rarely have a chance to interact with high-ranking officers. Clone lieutenants, captains and commanders were officers themselves, so itâs understable that they spet a lot times with âtheirâ generals and that they formed all sort of relationships with Jedi. From real comradeship (like the one between Anakin, Ahsoka and Rex) to hatred (like with Krell or Legends!Vos). But Troopers of lowest rank? They rarely interacted in person with Jedi - they fought with them in battles, yes, and talked about them among themselves, so the stories were shared but large part of those stories didnât put Jedi in good light.
Jedi were supposed to be great strategists and warriors, the ideal commanders that soldiers would follow into battle without second thoughts. Yet first Battle of Geonosis proved that wrong. And next battle and the next. Jedi werenât good at leading army, werenât good at war in general. There were exceptions of course, like Anakin who was considered by captain Rex âa lot more soldierly than the othersâ but that comes down pretty much to fact that Anakin wanted to be considered by his troopers as a good officer more than be respected just for Jedi status. He put personal effort to learn what it means to be real officer in army, he took to heart all wisdom and warnings of Grudo, a professional soldier that worked as his aide when Skywalker was still just-promoted commander. The same can be said for Ahsoka, who kept learning from Anakin and Rex and Yularen everything she could.
But as much as there were Jedi who truly cared for clone troopers, there were many that didnât care at all. Who insulted (hello, Vos) and mistreated them, who would sacrificed clones for the greater good (hello, Jedi philosophy)
There is also one thing that makes TCWâs idea too unrealistic for me:
Just look at Kenobi.
A man, who despite Jedi Code deeply loved Anakin and belived him to be the Chosen One, yet still did what Yoda (the ultimate superior) ordered him - he went after Anakin to Mustafar, actually using Padme as a way to achieve the goal with little regard for her and the child(s) safety. And he didnât have any chip inside brain - only all life, worldview and morals modeled by Jedi from the moment he get into Order. So why clones - genetically modeficed, cut from outside world and trained from the birth that obedience is everything - need the chips inside their brains?
IF fucking JEDI (who has his own opinions and brain to use) CAN BE SO INDOCTRINATED TO BLINDLY FOLLOW ORDERS WITHOUT MUCH REGARD FOR MORALITY OR HIS OWN FEELING JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE WHO IS THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY ORDERED HIM, THEN I DONâT SEE ANY POINT IN THE CLONE CHIPS.
Clones followed Supreme Commnaderâs order, the same as Kenobi followed Yodaâs. No chips, only long life indoctrination, thank you very much.
