I've avoided logging into my Twitter because of my posting that vent comic to it, log back in and the first thing I see is bullshit.

TW: mentions of death threats, suicide, suicide-baitinf cyberbullying, child death, antis being awful people in general.

Do I even have to say anything? Do I really? "A child will learn" Antis harassed a child to the point of them ending their life. There is no "LEARNING" In being DOGPILED TO THE POINT OF COMMITING SUICIDE.

What the fuck is wrong with Antis, what the genuinely fuck, so I even have to mention the rest of their dumbass tweet? And no I won't censor them because they clearly want to be seen so badly.

Let me clarify for all context, this is on a Vent comic thread where I show explicit death threats and encouragement of suicide by Antis towards that child. Even after that kid was dead. You want to know how Antis reacted? Lucky for you I have a tweet I just came upon by an Anti about the situation.

This is the ideal Antis have been carrying since the moment it was revealed a child committed suicide due to the harassment and cyberbullying. I've YET to see a single Anti condemning this sort of behavior. There's been no big posts, there's been no "Not all Antis!" There's been nothing but support for this sort of sentiment from fellow Antis.

And that's the difference between Antis and Proshippers. Proshippers call out other proshippers AND antis for being awful people, none of us are above accountability, meanwhile Antis encourage each other to send death threats to children and see nothing wrong with it.

When a proshipper does something wrong, all Antis attack that person while proshippers simply ask for the person to own up. When LITERAL HUNDREDS of Antis are caught doing something bad, it's "it's not your fault bestie 💜" "the proshippers deserve to d1e!" "You didn't do anything wrong telling a child to kill themselves :)" from Antis, and disgust + awareness posts from Proshippers. Which antis then flip into "wah harassment" because someone caught them in 4k triple HD platinum saying "Telling kids to die isn't a sin if they're gross!".

Tbh I think fandom generally needs to get better at sitting with the uncomfortable fact that a story/fanwork/meme/whatever can hurt one person and help another

This is why I think “tag warning” culture is kinder and more constructive than cancel culture / “no problematic content” culture. One size does not fit all, but if we learn to be more aware of the fact that the same thing can be emotionally validating or cathartic to one person and upsetting to another, and pick up a general mindset of thinking before we post, “what might people need a heads up for in this content?”, we grow more compassionate, more thoughtful, and more understanding of the differences in people’s experiences.

what is it?

"project miiistq" is going to be a ship community discourse project- aimed to better understand both proship and anti communities.

I, personally ID myself as an anti. I dont think its good to ship inc*st, adult/minor ships or sexualize minors, etc.

but i thought the best way to come to a good understanding is to completely remove all bias and do some deep diving into the community. i will be hosting polls, surveys, asking questions etc on several websites such as here, instagram, ao3, twitter and more probably. I will aim them at both sides of the community and in the end compile all my research and come ro a personal conclusion. my focus will be in mostly the jjba fandom but also others.

so im asking both pro-shippers and antis to help me.

note: this is a side blog so please dont ask questions in replys, rather send an ask, message, rb etc.

this is a project that relies on honesty. lying and making shit up to make one side look better or worse will not help in any way shape or form. please do not lie in submissions. i will be taking things in as if they are true and using that research BUT i will also have to trust my gut to keep liars and trolls out, so if i think something is off about a submission i have the right to discard it.

The Myth of the ‘Spoiled Steak Argument’

I don’t even make comments on shipping anymore but this new comparison about how pro-shipping content = being served spoiled steak is just so full of holes, like they are forcing it just to combat the food comparison argument that most shippers use which is basically ‘some people like vanilla ice cream, others like chocolate. We don’t question them for that.’

Like the situational comparison by ant1s apparently is that ‘seeing shipping content = being served spoiled meat.’ Now being served spoiled steak presupposes these following steps–

1. y’all went to food service

2. y’all paid for the steak

3. what you got was spoiled steak that can give you an upset stomach

So now you will complain to the restaurant and the chef because ‘what the f is up with this steak’ And that’s valid because here you are paying for this meal for a good time and being served spoiled food.

But that is frankly a bad comparison to fanfic, fanart, or any shipping content consumption. This is because you are missing one essential step for this comparison to be valid. 2. Y’ALL PAID FOR THE STEAK.

Fan content is generally free. Your typical fan content creator makes this content OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL and IN THEIR FREE TIME. This is why this spoiled steak argument doesn’t work out as well as the ‘food preference argument’ pro-shippers use.

This argument would only hold true if say, you commissioned a writer to make you this fic that’s a soft and fluffy coffee shop AU. You paid them at their prices, didn’t try to haggle, and even asked them respectfully to set a deadline. AND THEN, you get an angsty and sad zombie apocalypse whose only semblance to coffee shop is that they were in a coffee shop when the apocalypse happened. All three elements are present here.

1. y’all commissioned a content creator

2. y’all paid for this content

3. what you got was nothing like what you commissioned at all

The thing is that fan content is free WHICH MEANS we aren’t entitled to it. We cannot dictate what others create in their free time of their own free effort. Following this spoiled steak argument and pushing it to all instances of fan content would mean we are assuming that we PAID for such content, that we are entitled to dictate what it should or should not be. 

But did you commission this fanfic you said was bad when it’s clearly tagged with warnings or said that they chose not to put warnings? 

Did you commission the artist for this picture of character A and B kissing when you said character A and C is the better ‘healthier’ pairing and they should’ve drawn that instead?

Yeah. I thought so. Fan content consumption is free. We are not entitled to dictate what can and cannot be made by content creators. If you want someone to create something you like and catered to your needs, fucking commission. And stop calling free content spoiled steak.

I’m gonna regret posting my opinion, but I never learn so here goes. My real issue with pedophilia and incest in fiction lies in how many fictional works may treat it like it is normal or even healthy. In the vast majority of cases it is not. It’s not that I literally think the characters are real people or anything.

It’s more about the message being sent about such a real topic. You can write an pedophilic story that makes every little detail romanticized poetry, like Lolita, or you could write about a CSA survivor who is struggling coping with past abuse. Both of those stories mention pedophilia, but the presentation is what’s different. I would have this same opinion with topics like abuse, drug addiction, mental illness, etc.

If you wanna write about a tricky subject and share it on the internet, (note the and denoting both of those things together) just be responsible about it! Media is a powerful thing!

No, seriously though, Humbert is what we call an unreliable narrator. You’re not supposed to buy his excuses, you’re not supposed to think what he’s doing is okay, you’re supposed to see past that and exercise your own judgement.

Just bc somebody is the narrator or POV character doesn’t mean you’re supposed to agree with them. Authors regularly expect their readers to bring their own understanding of right and wrong to the table, not have it spoonfed by characters - because characters tend to be imperfect, just like real people.

The point of viewpoint characters like Humbert is to explore the mind of an abuser, to familiarize yourself with the ways they justify their actions to themselves. The author is not expecting you to sympathize with him. You’re supposed to find his excuses horrifying and sickening.

Plus, people cope in messy ways and that’s okay. For you, a story where, idk, let’s say incest is portrayed in a positive light may be triggering, but for somebody else it may be cathartic. And neither reaction is wrong. Other people are allowed to cope in ways that don’t work for you and vice versa.

“Just be responsible about it” yeah, that’s called tagging. Glad you agree it’s vital.
