so the thing is democrats need women to win. the people pushing shitty candidates in the hope they'll appeal to disaffected men (which, way more insulting than some feminist joking about, like, bald dudes btw, but wtv) desperately wish this was not so. but it is. women have to be on your guy's side. you can't say 'but trump' or 'but paxton' bc republicans do not rely on female voters to the same extent and are generally horribler, and no, you will not make up the gap with guys who usually vote republican bc they're not even paying attention to your guy except to mock him. so you do need the women.

A small additional detail about Platner’s waffen ss totenkopf tattoo is that he replaced it with a celtic knot in the shape of a dog or wolf.

which… is certainly less inherently problematic—if it weren’t covering a totenkopf I wouldn’t think twice about it—but knowing how Celtic culture is fetishized by White Supremacists, it doesn’t really detract from the original problem as much as one would hope.

Let me tell you something about young, angry, military men. They are in a culture of violence, and many of us got tattoo's, especially of skulls. The cooler the better.

I'm not attributing a good reason for a bad tattoo, but not everyone knows the meaning behind every tattoo. I would suggest looking at the Russian mob tattoo's or the Yakuza. I knew a ton about the Nazi's and fascism when I was in the service, but I had no idea what this particular tattoo meant until I was twenty years older.

I know a lot of people are complaining about it and now complaining about how he covered it with another tattoo from another culture. He could have covered it with flowers and you'd be mad about that too, especially if those flowers were done in the Japanese style. Some people would likely associate that with war era Japan.

Have you never been young? Have you never made a mistake? Are you serious? Or are you someone who simply wants Collins to win because you didn't get your favored candidate? Or maybe you're a republican operative trying to piss off all the young people into skipping the vote? I am not sure which many people are anymore, but if I had the choice between Platner and Collins, I'd choose Platner for the time being. There is another election in six years. Which of these two people isn't part of a political party trying to destroy the nation?

The thing about trying to discredit (one of) Platner's latest accusers by talking about her politics and the fact that she works for the Heritage Foundation is you then have to square that with the fact that Graham Platner, multi-time Susan Collins voter and noted violent bigot, was in a long-term relationship with her and apparently had no issues with her political opinions. Almost as if... he agreed with them...

Joking over I do think that it is worth addressing that 90% of “queerbaiting” is just jokes where queerness (especially between men) is the punchline. JD and Turk weren’t like that on Scrubs to draw in queer viewership, they were like that because the joke was that they were abnormally close for male friendship at the time and haha that’s gay. A lot of examples of “queerbait” are just homophobic jokes from that era of “comedy” that were designed to enforce the idea that men shouldn’t care about each other on anything deeper than a surface level lest they be subject to ridicule. Some people have tried to reclaim these jokes as hints of queerness but that was never their intended purpose. One of the most frequently cited examples of “queerbait” that falls under this brand of jokes is Sherlock’s “one for you, and for your date.” The punchline is them being mistaken for being on a date, and you can reclaim that moment by saying “actually they are <3” but analysis of baiting has to first acknowledge that the intent was always a punchline, not a hint.

You don't have to laugh at "girl math" or "girl dinner" or "I'm just a girl" jokes. You don't have to laugh at misogynistic humor that demeans women. You don't have to go along with it. You don't even have to sit there awkwardly pretending you didn't hear anything. You are allowed to speak up and say something.

You don't have to be a jerk about it. The most effective yet civil way of dealing with harmful "humor" is just pretending you don't get the joke and asking them to explain. "I don't get it, what's girl math? What's a girl dinner? What do you mean by you're just a girl? Can you explain the joke to me?"

And if you're feeling bold, you can just say (or follow up with) "I think that's misogynistic". That's allowed. You don't have to quietly endure misogynistic "jokes", you can call a spade a spade.

It really does feel like we've done a massive backsliding in gender stereotyping over the past few years and it's honestly alarming.

Not just the "girl x / boy x" like "girl math" to mean being stupid and bad at math, or these "lol girl dinner" posts where it's a can of energy drink and half a jar of olives.

But it's also this "pink this" and "blue that", like girls and women posting tiktoks like "being well behaved in the blue store in the hopes he'll take me to the pink store 😇" and 'blue store' meaning, like, a hardware store or a sporting goods store, and 'pink store' meaning a makeup or clothing store, and uh, hello?? Why is this so prolific right now?? Why aren't more people questioning or calling out how grossly sexist this all is??

You know human sexism is out of hand when we have to project "boys are silly lovable goofballs, but girls are cold and mean" onto animals who have no concept of and absolutely do not adhere to human gender roles and stereotypes.

The sad thing is that this has real world consequences for these animals. On average, male cats and kittens have shorter stays at shelters due to being adopted quicker than female cats and kittens. I have no concrete proof that this is due to stereotypes of boy cats as lovable goofballs but girl cats as cold and mean, but my own lived experience is that I know several people who have prioritized adopting male cats and kittens due to this (incorrect and sexist) assumption.

Of course cats all have different personalities, if you've ever had cats you know this. But it has no basis in gender roles or stereotypes. I've had boy cats who were aloof and unfriendly, and I've had girl cats who were sweet little cuddlebugs with everyone they met.

Again, animals are animals, they really have absolutely no concept of human gender roles and stereotypes.
