Hey remember all those posts that compared Hazbin Hotel to The Good Place? As if they're remotely similar shows in any way?

The Good Place is a comedy with a heavy focus on morality and ethics, questioning what makes someone "good" or "bad", and discussing the ways that a person is built by their circumstances and how someone can decide to change and be better.

Hazbin Hotel is a dark comedy for adults. It's meant to be dirty with heavy focus on violence and sex. Maybe it'll tackle morality later (and I hope it does, at least to make it clear that sex work doesn't make someone bad or wrong), but that will likely never be the focus.

These are not equivalent. Hazbin Hotel isn't worse than The Good Place because they are completely unrelated to each other.

They have completely different goals as entertaintment; comparing them is like comparing Adventure Time and Fallout because they have vaguely similar premises.

It’s a frustrating symptom of the lack of nuance often seen on online communities. People use those stigmatised traits and symptoms in ableist depictions of characters, so rather than go ““hey, this can be ableist if used like this, be careful and avoid doing that!”” people go ““hey, this can be ableist so never use it or you’re ableist.”” because people think in a very binary way.

as long as you can take care of yourself, as long as your traits aren't Too Weird, as long as your traits are sympathetic.

difficulty setting a routine is Relatable up until we talk about people who never learned to brush their teeth as part of a routine, people who struggle to shower every day because showering itself takes mental and emotional energy rather than being background noise.

then we'll see backlash posts with tens or hundreds of thousands of notes talking about how disgusting of a trait it is or how dangerous it is to "normalize" (read: talk about where they have to see it).

that's not even getting into traits that people deem dangerous or scary, which is it's own can of worms

The discourse originally was "mental health symptoms = dangerous and icky" and over the past decade (roughly) shifted to "specific types of mental health symptoms = dangerous and icky"

A discussion really needs to be held about how All mental health symptoms are real and valid. Mentally ill people can lash out and be assholes. Mentally ill people can struggle to take care of themselves. Mentally ill people can sleep consistently and for 8 hours. Mentally ill people can get out of bed and do their damndest to make the day good. And so on.

Its basically setting this impossible standard to especially younger teens and kids who think that if they struggle in any way deemed "gross or icky" by the internet than they should shut up and shut down. And that's not good.

absolutely absolutely. and I think on a wider scale a Lot of discourse is poisoned by people becoming invested in conversations on and activism for their own traits (their mental illness, their neurodivergency, their sexuality, etc), but setting their experiences as the standard. people viewing the existence of people in their spaces who are nevertheless different from them as either Overt threats or people that they have to fight with for the right to matter More (to not just be the center of the conversation but to be the Only conversation).

it's this mindset that says "mental illness has to look like this because I look like this."
