As summer is approaching, I’d like to remind everyone that you are not entitled to ask someone to cover up their scars, self inflicted or not. I don’t care if they’re big, I don’t care if they’re noticeable, or purple, or all over their body, or what. You can’t police people’s bodies.
This also goes for my friends with feeding tubes, ostomy bags, central lines and urinary catheters. People are allowed exist in bodies that stray from the expected norm.
Love the scar positivity ❤️ This summer I am debuting my brand new 4 inch scar from skin cancer removal on my left shoulder. It makes me self conscious but I’m growing to feel it’s me now.
So let me add, if I may: go out dress however you feel best and if you’ve got exposed skin outdoors, use sunscreen…I promise you won’t regret wearing sunscreen. You may regret NOT.
My big scar is a part of me and will join the others as things I grow into loving but if I could go back in time and properly prevent it, I WOULD.
Does anyone have picture books which include scars? My child has a skin graft from his foot to the top of his thigh and gets comments at school because of it. We’ve read a lot of inclusive books with top surgery scars and prosthetics and body types, but no one has scars like him…. Except Zuko from Avatar, whom he is currently obsessed with.
