#it's just 'what the author intended for their work doesn't automatically supercede the result of the work itself.' that's it. #it means 'the author said the characters have a healthy relationship but what they actually wrote was ipv so what they said doesn't matter' #it means 'the director said they wanted to make a Strong Female Character #then always framed her so her tits were the most visible thing on screen so in reality she's just treated as a sex object' #it means 'it can reasonably be argued that the answer to the mystery is x and not y even though the author said they didn't mean for that' #it Does Not mean 'the author is dead to me because I don't like them' #nor does it mean 'death of the text' #it means that the work already exists for me to analyse and no amount of commentary after the fact will change what's actually in it #fwiw I tend to view author commentary as expert insight rather than definitive insight #it's extremely likely that they know their work best and will have unique thoughts about it that are worth hearing #but if they're wrong they're not automatically less wrong just bc they're the author #it means I don't have to bother with thinking 'am I onto something with this symbolic analysis or was the author not thinking this deep' #because whether or not the author did it on purpose is immaterial to whether or not it exists #if you trip over a paint can and accidentally splash your canvas in red #then the figures still look like they're covered in blood even if you didn't mean to do it
