[very clearly indulging the urge] im fighting the urge
One of my favorite tricks for designing alien species/cultures is to take a real animal with an interesting lifecycle and think about what that biology would translate to if they had human intelligence
Example: silk moths as a base species
Because the moths themselves don’t eat and only live long enough to mate and then starve to death, the entire culture is made up of children and adolescents. The older children raise the younger ones, with families being made up of hatchmates from different years.
Because molts and eventual transformation into a short lived adult happen on a set schedule, families have a cycle— when your oldest set of siblings cocoon to become adults, you wait at the mating grounds and try to adopt their newborns after they pass. If that fails, you take any ‘orphans’ you can find.
Because death and birth are nearly simultaneous, they have a religion based around reincarnation, and infants with markings similar to a parent are often given their name. Claiming the offspring of a beloved family member is vitally important, because you want to be able to protect their soul and keep them close.
Because it’s hard to track the offspring of your male family members, there are sometimes major fights when a family sees an infant with familiar markings in another family’s clutch.
Between mating seasons, their culture is extremely food-oriented, because everyone is growing and silkworms eat nigh constantly. They spend most of their lives outdoors but sleep and shelter from bad weather in large family dwellings made from wood and the remains of the silk cocoons of prior generations.
everyone is really vibing with the silkworm aliens I see
Do Eridians know they are different colours. I bet Grace's alien kids love finding out what colour they are. It means absolutely nothing to them but they're like :O :O
Some of them think he's making this whole 'colour' thing up to mess with them and try to catch him out by asking again on a different day to prove he's just saying random noises but he's like you are still blue buddy and they're like :O :O
Like if we met an alien species who had extra senses & they said that some humans felt spingly and some humans felt spoingly I bet we'd all want to know if we were spingly or spoingly humans

Culturally significant forbidden candy
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
i present to you. the ultimate blorbo chart. you will need to zoom in for every section to be visible. you may reblog this and accept asks for it. have fun.

melshi and kleya and bix and luthen having scary dog privilege with lw!cassian is very important to me. like im trying not to get tropey with it but the idea of lw!cassian ferociously protective of his loved ones while also being filled to the brim with anxiety is so tasty to me. he perceives everything as a threat until proven otherwise which means he has a lot of to protect everyone from.
So unless I'm misremembering, Rocky's textural display translates smaller wavelengths of light as smoother/finer and broader/larger wavelengths as rougher? Wouldn't that mean that it still can't translate saturation, contrast, and extra-spectral colors? Like it couldn't display reddish purples, because it couldn't meaningfully display a smooth and rough texture on the same spot concurrently? Unless it has more than one kind of pixel—made from different materials so sound bounces off it differently—to mimic rgb??? But wouldn't that solution also descrease its resolution????? I need detailed descriptions of how the fuck this fictional display works. I NEED TO KNOW.
Anyways I started thinking about this initially for like. A hypothetical exchange where Grace refers to something as being a color Rocky's display cannot display.
Rocky: "Friend Grace. What color this, question?"
Grace: "That's a reddish purple... kind of wine-colored I guess?"
Rocky: "Red is rough... Purple is smooth. Is red OR purple, question?"
Grace: "No, it's reddish purple. It's reflecting red and purple wavelengths at the same time. I guess your display can't show that, huh?"
Rocky: "... Rocky think Grace make shit up."
pros of having a favorite character youve liked for over a decade: character brings you joy and excitement
cons of having a favorite character youve liked for over a decade: they have become a permanent part of your internal monologue and you cant get them to go away
not even funny how true this is for me
"what is this BABY doing in space!???"

god i hate how normalized diet culture and shit like bmi and calories are. bmi is based on eugenics. calories are a measurement of how much energy something gives u and not at all of how much weight or fat ull gain. diets have been proven to be harmful and ultimately unhelpful in actually losing weight. fatness has been largely proven to not be inherently unhealthy and doesnt inherently cause health issues.
if anyone has more good links to add on then please do and if anyone knows more on this stuff than me then dont hesitate to correct me!
FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS GOOD!! if you’re eating, ever, and even/especially if it’s hard, know that i am personally SO SO proud of you
The BMI was invented by Adolphe Quetelet, the 19th century statistician who invented phrenologist anthropometry. He wasn’t just a eugenicist, he was one of the founding fathers of racist pseudoscience. Please do not listen to anything he has to say about your body.
“And get this: While epidemiologists use BMI to calculate national obesity rates (nearly 35 percent for adults and 18 percent for kids), the distinctions can be arbitrary. In 1998, the National Institutes of Health lowered the overweight threshold from 27.8 to 25—branding roughly 29 million Americans as fat overnight—to match international guidelines. But critics noted that those guidelines were drafted in part by the International Obesity Task Force, whose two principal funders were companies making weight loss drugs.”

Body mass index is used to sell weight loss drugs, set insurance premiums, and counsel patients. There's just one little problem.
I always thought everyone knew this by like the early 2000s but instead I see more people than ever believing this stuff is real medical science
Man if y'all folks up thread thought this situation was bad back in 2021 (as I did too) you won’t BELIEVE what the 2026 cultural convo on these topics is like.
There’s a post going around now that includes the line “our worst case scenario as trans men is being seen as ugly weird women” and it’s driving me nuts. Actually I think the worst case scenario for trans men is what happened to Sam Nordquist and countless others but alright.
i love the extremely feminist argument of "people perceived as ugly weird women suffer no real serious consequences for that perception" (/s).
once again people continue to say things that would be recognized as blatantly obviously misogynistic if not anti-feminist if they weren't being said about trans men.
Happy pride month with finally become your true self 🫂🏳️⚧️💕
Endlessly diabolical how you can't say words like rape and suicide uncensored without either being criticised by idiots or punished by conglomerates.
It's not r*pe, it's rape. It's not su*cide, it's suicide. Not unalive, dead. The backbone needs to be reintroduced en masse because softening the blow of these concepts with advertising language does absolutely nothing but allow people unaffected by them to feel not even a sting of what they can do, prompting inaction.
And it's been proven that on certain websites, you don't even face a repercussion for using the words as they are. People just started censoring themselves because they feared the potential lack of views and likes and followers which is so nasty itself.
I attended an anti-suicide seminar in college. One of the big takeaways from it was that stigmatizing suicide increases the rate of suicide, because people who are feeling suicidal feel like they can't ask for help. Every time I see babytalk garbage like 'unalive', I think of that.
Use the real words. Words have power, and they matter.
i have a suggestion
Do not obey afterwards either. Do not obey.
