i think the most upsetting thing about american-flavor puritanism is how fucking patronizing it is. it's 2026 but the whole world still has to deal with a cultural hegemony grown from the gnarled vestiges of victorian-era paternalism. tax-paying adults with passports and the right to vote are treated like wayward children because of the antiquated idea that authorities must protect the weak minds of the unwashed masses from depravity and corruption. the average american can send a fellow citizen to the chair, but they can't piss in a ditch without being declared an outlaw. american entertainment media is saturated with sex, but you can't talk about it online without getting your account suspended. it's such blatant censorship at a universal scale, but because sexual content is framed as inherently dangerous, this restriction on basic adult autonomy, this blanket denial of moral and intellectual adulthood, can be reframed as protection, an expression of care, a moral duty. "won't someone think of the children!" I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN! I AM A GROWN MAN!
thank god that the video game that features slow motion animations of graphic gunshot wounds and is rated 18+ has a profanity filter in single player offline mode. thank you for protecting this 33 year old mind from the corrupting influence that is a horse named apple slut
Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.
And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.
It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.
when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.
One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".
The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."
I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.
If you want to be accepting of mental illness, you need to accept the fact that some people's everyday lives are going to be terrifying to you. That doesn't mean they don't get to talk about it. Stop forcing hurt, isolated people to become even MORE hurt and isolated because you can't fathom toughening up a bit.
they should turn that charlie kirk statue and turn it into a water fountain that shoots water out of his neck hole

kids were roleplaying with minecraft figurines and one of them had their figure go up to the other and say āiām in love with youā and the other one replied āsword slash to the chest. and youāre on fireā
Every time I see someone say āwhat is air?ā or ātrolololā on tumblr, all I think is:
get off tumblr, please.

It's important to note that Chekhov's Gun was not originally about foreshadowing, but a piece of advice to playwrights about how every element in a play should have narrative relevance. The corollary to Chekhov's Gun is that if a gun mounted on the wall in act 1 is never used at all in the entirety of the play, then it should be omitted from the play entirely.
Corollary to the corollary: this does not suggest that the only way a gun (or other prop or bit of set dressing) should be allowed to exist is if it sees active use. In the classic example of the gun, it can never be used but still be relevant. A character who keeps a gun mounted above his desk in between hunting trophies is characterized by the presence of the gun, just like a character who leaves a gun on her nightstand next to a glass of water and a crucifix. A gun as part of a huge display of weapons that takes up an entire wall can tell us a lot without ever being used, too: is it a flintlock among muskets and swords or a desert eagle next to grenade launchers and tank shells?
And that's just the ways a script might specifically call out the presence of the gun. They're all relevant without seeing use, because their presence tells you something about characters and the space.
You could equally have the gun there as an incidental part of the set dressing, not called for by the script but perfectly logical. The script tells us that the space is cluttered with a wide array of objects that seems like it should be cleaned before someone gets hurt? A gun on a table would certainly help to paint that picture. The action takes place in a cabin in the country? A rifle leaning on the wall by the door might make the scene look more remote or lend verisimilitude to a character talking about fresh venison. A character is a soldier returning from the front lines? Well, a gun would complete the look without being mentioned or used in the script.
And, a gun can be not used in a way that is just as meaningful and relevant. A character comes in at the start of the play and puts a gun up on a shelf. When difficulties come, she looks at the gun, but never touches it. A grizzled cop's gun is always visible, but never used, with negotiation and de-escalation saving the day instead of violence. A character talks seriously about suicide and casts longing glances at a gun, but it's gone in the final scene and they're still there.
