you can only hope that this roland garros finally retires the “weak era” discourse after seeing the level of tennis and the fights these players are putting themselves through every round. there’s this sentiment now that some of it comes from the fact that carlos and jannik might be missing, and that players are playing out of their minds because this feels like their best chance at a grand slam title. but that just shows what the field is actually capable of and this level didn’t suddenly appear overnight.
and this “weak era” take only makes sense if you’re not actually watching the tour week to week. the field is deep and dangerous and there’s real upset potential everywhere: there were 35 different singles atp title winners in 2025, 14 champions outside the top 50, and nine “match point saved” champions. sorry, but that’s not what a weak era looks like. that’s what a high-floor era looks like.
the gap at the top isn’t because everyone is weak; it’s because carlos and jannik are accelerating in a coevolution loop, stacking improvements across multiple parts of the game at once and validating them in the latest rounds over and over. this makes the whole tour level up because everyone is training with “how do i beat them?” in mind, which pushes the rest of the field to improve rapidly too. players aren’t just trying to become top 10 anymore, they’re trying to solve the specific problem that carlos and jannik represent. but they’re all chasing a moving ceiling that keeps rising in real time.
obsessed with the difference between them

matteo surviving a 5+ hour match with that glass body of his might actually be the most impressive result of the tournament.
