I saw this post and idk it made me feel some type of way. I may get flack for this but idc I feel it must be said. Poaching is a lot more nuanced than âbad people kill animals.â
Poaching, especially in Africa, is a byproduct of colonization and poverty. Although poaching existed prior to European colonizers, it was not done at a scale and frequency that would threaten wildlife populations. Poaching exploded under colonial rule where things like ivory, pelts, hunting trophies, and in some cases, land were prized and sought after by European settlers. This led to an initially boom that devastated local animal populations and cause some tribes to become very reliant on poaching as a means of subsistence.
Additionally, due to poverty, people are still being driven to poach animals, even endangered animals because itâs a more profitable way to support oneself and community, and predatory animals can be poached because they threaten and devastate local livestock. Anti-poaching measures rarely take into account the human and economic drive behind poaching. Youâre shooting and killing poachers but what about their families and communities that they support? Are those animals in a better place when there more people waiting to hunt them? Anti poaching measures donât actually care about eliminating poaching, if they did theyâd come from the angle of human and economic development and community improvement. Because letâs be real, if those people living in their poor, rural, undeveloped, undereducated*, regions with not many opportunities turn to poaching, itâs not from a moral standpoint, theyâre chasing survival.
African governments be corrupt af, keeping all the money for themselves and leaving masses in poverty then erect some anti-poaching laws to please smug westerners as if they arenât driving people into desperation. And then poaching rings take advantage of this desperation, much like a gang would, and supply them with guns and a promise of a better life. And bam, you have a poaching problem. So long as you have people in desperation, poaching will still be a problem.
Like many social issues; drugs, violence, crime; a closer look and youâll find that poverty and lack of opportunity are at the bottom of it...
Heroes of our times: this woman who stopped shaving, plucking, moisturizing, fixing her hair and applying make-up because her douche boyfriend kept complaining she spent too much time in the bathroom and YOU WONâT BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.
[Spoiler: he learned women donât actually âlook like thatâ and tried to force her to âtake care of herselfâ again, while she realized she was wasting so. much. time. and is now living her best hairy, unplucked, unmoisturized, unblow-dried and unlipsticked life. Truly a blessĂšd day.]
For once the you wonât believe what happened next line was actually correct. Kinda nice to see people willing to learn and grow.

Meanwhile, in Spain:
Spring happens and it's not photoshopped!
Actually it's this: a carpet of poplar fluff burns to reveal the grass below at the Parque del Cidacos de Calahorra, Spain.
According to geographyrealm.com:The seed fluff produced by poplars is also highly flammable. The combustible seeds can quickly catch fire and burn off, leaving underlying grass and other vegetation untouched.
Magical
Iâm watching that documentary âBefore Stonewallâ about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one âknown homosexualâ. The âknown homosexualâ is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that thereâs nothing wrong with him mentally and heâs never been arrested. When asked whether heâd take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows heâs gay, he says that they didnât up until tonight, but he guesses theyâre going to find out, and heâll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like âŠwhy are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says âI think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.â
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Daleâs boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudsonâs disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought Iâd make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.
dude had guts, someone needs to update his Wikipedia page
Because I keep getting messages from people who didnât google it.

Me, reading this without grapheme-color synesthesia:
they really gave us a female lead in a star wars movie & made her kind and good and angry and powerful and complex & then spent the next 2 movies revolving almost her entire storyline around a white male war criminal who abused her, abused her friends, abused her family. all the while validating all the people who romanticized gaslighting and torture. for fan service lmaoÂ
they also gave us a strong black male lead who was kind and rebelled against his entire way of life when he saw the atrocities he was expected to take part in. He risked his life to save others and was shown to love and care deeply for his friends and willing to sacrifice himself to save him. Then the next two movies infantilize him to be this weak self preserving side character with literally no agency beyond yelling other characterâs names.
They also gave us a Latino sci-fi hero who was an ace fighter pilot with a heart of gold and a wealth of courage who showed an incredible amount of support and kindness and trust towards a man who he had just met. Then the next two movies relegated him to being a chronic fuck-up and then ret-conned his ace pilot backstory in service of a racist drug dealer backstory to make him more like Han Solo
wow i cant believe adhd doof is canon

Love isnât patient and kind and humble. Love is messy. And horrible and selfish and bold. Itâs not finding your perfect half. Itâs the trying and reaching and failing. Love is being willing to ruin your good painting for the chance at a great one.

Do non-americans realize that the United States is literally just a bunch of countries in a trench coat that agreed to be semi-nice to each other in order to sneak into the Big Boy Club? Because letâs be honest thatâs just what the USA is
The rest of the world: So⊠youâre a big country?
The states, standing on each otherâs shoulders: Y- yes,,,
I love how everyone whoâs reblogged this hasnât added anything on or tagged anything on it. Theyâre all just like âYeah. Thatâs it. Thatâs the entire United States summed up in one post-â
#oh my god is THAT why you guys are so weird
Yeah 100%
Donât let these tags die omfg
10/10 can confirm
absolutely bonkers that my own tags have crossed my dash like this more than fifteen reblogs after i wrote them
I moved to another state. 30 minutes away. My family acts like I betrayed them and canât understand my life choices. Itâs completely different way of life, especially during covid. Completely different country.
every single fucking time one of those articles of âthings europeans find weird about americaâ complains that sales tax isnât included
states set the sales tax!!! itâs literally different across state lines!!! american retailers canât add it bc theyâd have to account for 50 different prices!!!!!!!
It gets even more insane! Californiaâs clean air standards for cars and other such things are so much higher than everyone elseâs! So if a car manufacturer in Detroit wants to sell their damn cars in California, they need to build their cars to California clean air standards. But retooling an assembly line and car design to have some cars meet California clean air standards, while building others to other clean air standards is a lot of work, so car manufacturers all over the country have to build all their cars to California clean air standards.
Which is why California went into an uproar earlier this year when the Federal Government tried to argue that states canât set their own environmental guidelines! âFuck you!â says California, âwe remember Los Angeles in the 80s, how bad the smog gets, go pollute your own damn air over in your own damn state where there isnât a thermal inversion layer to trap all the smog down near ground level!â
âBut youâre making it soooo haaaaaard to sell our cars everywhere else!â they whine.
âFuck you!â California shouts. âAnd while weâre at it, we donât give a shit what you say, Mister President, weâre gonna open our damn states when weâre good and ready, and our friends Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, and Washington State agree! Also, weâve decided to legalize weed!â
âBut the Federal Government says itâs illegal!â shouts the other states.
âFuck you, we make the drug laws in our state, and we say toke up!â
âNow, hang on!â shouts the Federal government. âYou can legalize weed in your state, but all banks are federal agencies, so if your weed dispensaries set up bank accounts, those accounts have money from illegal practices in it and are subject to seizure by the federal government!â
âFINE!â shouts California. âHey, weed guys, you can keep selling weed, but you can only deal in cash!â
âHow the fuck is that supposed to work!?â
âI DONâT FUCKING KNOW, TAKE IT UP WITH DC!â
âBy the way, if youâre gay married elsewhere, we wonât recognize it,â mutters Texas.
âOH FUCK YOUUUUUUU!âÂ
And so it goes and so it goesâŠ
âWhatâs sales tax?â says Montana. âWhatâs road maintainence?â âalso whatâs a speed limit?â
Seriously driving in Wisconsin is a PAIN because winter-summer cycle DESTROYS our roads but we use DUI and speeding ticket money to repair them. Itâs never enough and roads take forever to fix so itâs always a disaster.
Meanwhile, in Illinois, our NEIGHBOR, they have tolls so their normal driving tickets are lower AND they have nicer roads!
Not just that, but Illinois has a HUGE sales tax while Wisconsinâs tax is a lot lower. Right now with COVID itâs like Georgia is Sweden just throwing open the gates and California is hesitant to crack a window and DC is just waving itâs hands in the air because it doesnât know what to support but DEF doesnât want to support the âwrongâ team because then theyâll end up crucified by the other.
Itâs a madhouse that I unfortunately live in.
One of my favorite things about ur terrible katamari-ball of countries disguised as a single country is that every state has different traffic laws, but you can drive anywhere once you get a license in your state. So you can just like⊠drive out of state and get arrested for something you were never even taught was illegal. Itâs magical.
