Flash memory essentially works by trapping charge inside a little cage, but this containment isn't perfect and the charge will leak out over time and needs to be occasionally "topped off" by the disk controller. This happens automatically whenever the drive is powered on, but unpowered flash memory actually degrades pretty quickly: there can be significant data loss within 1-3 years depending on temperature, chip quality, etc.

So if you have any flash drives, SSDs, SD cards or entire devices with important data on them, if they sit unplugged most of the time, plug 'em in now and then.
