it's mandatory i fear. sorry i don't make the rules :/
omg if i was an oracle i would be LYYYYYINGGGG
today I found out my mother doesnât know what dandelions are and now Iâm wondering what other strange secrets sheâs been quietly harboring
Where do you live that you donât have dandelions?
we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation
So after extensive interrogation I have an update:
my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.
the truth is actually weirder
sheâs aware dandelions look like this
she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions
she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?
she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.
gosh I enjoy this website
For comparison, this is a daffodil
See, folks in the southern US will tell you up and down those are buttercups, actually.
i donât think so? iâm southern and buttercups are what we call these things (much tinier)
Wait I thought those bigger cup ones were Easter Lillies???
This is an Easter Lily. It is an actual lily and therefore deadly to cats.
Theyâre marigolds and I know a bitch when I see one!
This is a marigold:
âŠ.we need to start taking the phrase âgo touch grassâ more literally. go outside and examine a flower i beg u
It just keeps going. Thereâs always more.
Studies show that approaching youth with a bystander-intervention model is actually a lot more effective for reducing sexual assault, and it is also more enthusiastically received than programs that bill themselves as anti-rape.
We can tell youth that they are basically ârapists waiting to happenâ (anti-rape initiative), or we can tell them that we know they would intervene if they saw harm happening to someone and we want to help empower them to do that (bystander intervention). The kids jump in with both feet for the latter! It was amazing to see children (and young boys in particular) excited to do this work and engage their creativity with it. Also, studies show that not only do they go on to intervene, but they also do not go on to sexually assault people themselves. Bystander intervention also takes the onus off the person being targeted to deter rape and empowers the collective to do something about it. It answers the question in the room when giggling boys are carrying an unconscious young woman up the stairs at a house party, and people are not sure how to respond and are waiting for âsomeoneâ to say or do something.

This is also, btw, how the US drastically reduced drunk driving in the US. Telling people they shouldnât drive when intoxicated made absolutely zero difference. A slogan-and-ad-campaign for âFriends donât let friends drive drunk!â changed drinking culture. Going after the bystanders is quite often the most effective thing to do in any social change.
I genuinely wonder if people realize how many projects get abandoned because the readership "wasn't there", when in reality, the readership just stayed silent. It's a big thing in trad pub that book series get discontinued because readers pirate the books or wait until the series is finished to buy a copy, leading the publisher to think that nobody actually wants the book enough to continue the series, but it happens with indie creators too.
I've discontinued a lot of free, online series because it's not worth putting 3-5 hours a week into posting a project for no readers. Sometimes I finish the series for me but just never post it again, other times I don't finish it at all because it feels more worthwhile to put my time into other things. Sometimes I hear from readers who are sad or upset that I didn't finish something they were liking, but the *reason* it never got finished is because I didn't know anyone liked it. If you like something, tell the creator, tell your friends, make some noise about it. If you would be sad if a story never finished, make that interest known because one of my biggest considerations before discontinuing a series is "will people miss this? Will I be letting people down" and 9/10 times, I come to the conclusion of "no, it doesn't even seem like anyone's reading this" only to learn after I've moved on that apparently someone was.
I've said this before in a different way, and this post said it so well. With real examples. If you like something, tell people.
If you want more content from an artist or author, if you like their stuff, tell them. It will give them creative fuel to keep going. And often it gives them other resources as well. Recommend a work to other people. Leave a comment or a review. It doesn't have to be long, just genuine, a sentence or two. Not many people know that a book's success is judged by book reviews as well as sales. Review the book on Amazon or another site to help it pass the metric of success and be recognized by publishers and retailers.

Im going to hold your hand when I say this. It is not realistic to expect yourself or your family to be able to survive solely off of food you have foraged or grown in a garden. People with more knowledge and experience have tried and failed. What do you think happened to all of those communes in the 60s? Most of them failed. Famine and malnutrition have been constant companions to humanity until industrialized farming and food supply lines came along.
It feels like a uniquely American capitalist take to assume these traditions will make you completely self sufficient. You need a lot of people, a lot of time, a lot of knowledge across a lot of subjects, and a lot of luck to provide for everyone's nutritional needs.
So should you even bother trying to be more self sufficient with your food? I argue yes. Foraging and gardening are fun and will teach you so much about many things. They are deeply rewarding activities that can supplement your diet. There are herbs I haven't bought in years because I grow my own. There are dishes I can only make with foraged ingredients because I can't get them in stores.
You may not have the power to do everything, but that doesn't mean your efforts are wasted. Getting 5% of your nutritional needs from food you have grown or foraged, even for a season, is a massive accomplishment.

Pro tip: when you see a brand new slang term, your first question should be how that term has been used in AAVE for the past 20-30 years.
This, too. This is a big one as well.
girls cant even say âim really proud of myself because ive been working to improve my dental hygiene latelyâ anymore. theyve gotta say some shit like âive been breaking into flossing culture â
Girls cant even say âim haunted by the way some combination of being chronically online, the constant bleed together of online and physical spaces, and autistic echolalia result in a roundabout language which turns everything into a joke or an anecdote rather than just. a statement.â anymore. theyve gotta say some shit like âgirls dont even abc anymore, theyve gotta xyzâ
Sorry if this has already been asked, but if you join the IWW and get promoted or things about your job change so that you have real hiring and during power, do you stay in or do you get out?
If you gain the ability to hire or fire, you are no longer eligible for membership. It's the IWW's way of helping prevent power imbalances or sabotage by bosses.
This does not mean you have to stop being supportive of union activity! It just means you aren't going to be a voting member welcome to meetings.
However, especially during negotiations, having a manager on the inside who is an ally to workers is CRAZY valuable. Likewise, you can still encourage your subordinates to join the union, and you can still provide other forms of non-voting, non-meeting support to the organization.
Just because you've moved up in the business hierarchy does not mean you have to shut up an walk away, or go back to being uninvolved with union work. Rather, it means that instead of the union fighting for you, you get to fight for the union.
Dude our Amazing Digital Circus sonas were dating each other. I know we never interacted and youâre a really swag gay bartender and Iâm a himejoshi shut-in but you have to believe me
Youâre completely correct. Out of my way, able-bodied losers. Fuck you.
