i completely agree, especially when it comes to tumblr. sylus is characterized so wrongly in fanfics. and the excuse is always, ‘this is my fanfic, my sylus’ okay fine then why don’t you write about a different character because sylus isn’t like that. i once saw a fanfic where sylus cheated on the mc, seriously? many writers see no problem in mischaracterizing a character for the sake of their own fantasies. if you read fanfics on tumblr, you know this is true. im not lumping all writers together ofc im just speaking generally. don’t get me wrong there’s certainly no harm in writing your own fantasies with a character you love but you can do that without mischaracterizing them

To be completely honest, I feel it is much ruder, and frankly, entitled to complain in the main tags about how the fandom is interacting with a character for their own fun.

If you do not like the way an author is writing a character it is your own responsibility to curate your experience.

Complaining about vague mischaracterization in the main tags is not a viable solution to the problems you are having.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

LaVonte’s response to being called gay definitely feels like a man from the 80s, especially from the toxic American Psycho business world. The homophobia of the era, the lack of social acceptance, the HIV/AIDS epidemic being referred to publicly as “the gay plague” — it would have been social suicide especially in the conservative environment of Reagan/Bush 1-era America. His denial seems like a snap reaction out of fear of being discovered. Because it’s not that LaVonte is outright homophobic; he expresses no issue with Madelaine’s sexuality or Maya and Amelia’s. And it goes without saying Lou has no issue playing a queer character. Remember when Squak’s bisexual ass seduced Theodore and Jeremy Renner and couldn’t stop talking about how hot Andhera was? So, by process of elimination, we can conclude it’s internalized homophobia. Whether he and HJ are together romantically isn’t the point; it’s the insinuation that they have an intimate relationship beyond business partners being spoken about openly, even though their behaviour and words make it clear their relationship does go deeper than that.

I do hope this is a characterization Lou continues to explore. I think it’s interesting seeing someone who should be in his sixties/seventies deal with the trauma afflicted on him from the era in which he was embraced as a vampire. There’s something compelling there.

Simply cannot stop thinking about the fact that HJ and LaVonte are Sire and Childe and yet seem to have no hierarchy between them at all. HJ unquestionably treats LaVonte as his equal and LaVonte feels perfectly comfortable yelling at and physically assaulting HJ, both of which are kind of unthinkable under the social rules of the Camarilla. It’s LaVonte’s name first in Worthy and Wingstreet Industries. They are Sire and Childe but more importantly they are partners.

A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.
