it’s times like these, sat on a wooden bench at the park overlooking the river in the breeze, you wonder if you were wrong.
wrong to leave him like that, laying there in that hospital bed, god knows what pumping in and out of him. keeping him alive.
you’d fallen in love with zhong chenle some 5 years prior, his bubbly personality drawing you in. Whenever you heard that laugh from the back of the class, your mood instantly brightened. even if that laugh wasn’t reserved for you. what you hadn’t known at the time, was that chenle watched you, waiting for the perfect time to manoeuvre his way into your life. after a group project for your statistics class, you two became inseparable, until one day he finally asked at dusk.
‘y/n. you know what i’m going to say.’ and you did. when he leaned in to kiss you, you’d anticipated it. you had a bond, a bond which allowed you to know eachother deeply.
but chenle didn’t tell you he was sick. chenle, despite 49 months of friendship and blooming love, didn’t care to tell you that he was dying. looking back, you should’ve seen it, the shake in his hand he couldn’t quite control, the days in which he could barely stand. but you chalked it up to his active lifestyle, not to a chronic illness.
when jeno called you that day, his voice was pitiful. he knew. they all knew. you rushed to the hospital nonetheless, and there he was. your beautiful chenle, frail and lifeless. you could barely recognise him with his skin that grey, not even the orange hue from the window brightened him up. he begged you to stay, to be with him in his last days, but you couldn’t stand it. you couldn’t watch him deteriorate before your eyes and then be expected to carry on with life, not when your love had just died.
so you left. left the hospital, left chenle. if you didn’t see it happen, maybe it wouldn’t be real. but it was real, and it left you now, sat at a park bench at dusk, wishing you could go back in time and change your own mind.
