I never watched the Mission Impossible movie series other than if they happened to be on TV and even then only in the background so I didn’t expect this.

I think I’ve gotten too used to indestructible action heroes who can’t lose a fight or get more than a scratch, so I was pleasantly surprised to see Ethan Hunt fumble around and get his ass kicked repeatedly. He comes off as a slightly more realistic male power fantasy because he can do some insane shit but then slightly miscalculate a jump and bash his head into a wall, knocking himself out only to wake up later tied to torture chair in the villains lair.

He is the clear leader of his team but he repeatedly ends up in situations that he only escape because someone else helps him. Without his team or characters with gray morality he would have been dead many times over. I wasn’t even surprised when he drowned and legit died for a few minutes, only saved by Ilsa, because that’s what he does. He completes the mission (or a step of it) and then fucking dies.

An having Benji as his right hand man makes their dynamic so much more entertaining because Ethan will do something amazing, get his ass kicked, leaving Benji who is incredibly anxious to try and help him which buys Ethan enough time to recover and save them both, or Benji gets overpowered and both of them have to be saved by another agent, often Ilsa.

I can’t get over the scene where Ethan has recently been resuscitated and Benji just woke up from being unconscious and they both have to stumble around in a weakened and dazed state to get out. That’s the kind of action heroes I want to see and root for!

And Ethan is fallible and emotional enough to burn everything down, including himself, just to keep Benji safe. He was ready to destroy the relationship between USA and Britain by kidnapping the prime minister because Benji was being held captive.

When I first saw this behind the scenes photo I assumed it was from a spicy scene between Ethan and Ilsa that Pegg just crashed, but no, it’s from a drowning scene and the actors got into this pose because they know what the dynamic between the characters is.

I have to admit the movies are so fast paced and have so many scenes in different locations that they blend together for me, but I had fun marathoning them nonetheless. We need more modern action heroes like Ethan Hunt who are fallible and legit team players.

Made this post about 15 minutes after the repair guy who fixed the pump on my dishwasher packed up his tools and left, as the dishwasher was whirring along doing my dishes from that morning.

He said the exact same thing, which I did not know before that, so spreading this knowledge.

Something I see getting overlooked a lot when discussing queercoding in historical media is that in many cases it's not evidence that the writers secretly shipped it; it was aimed at straight dudes specifically to freak them out. Depicting a male villain as sexually interested in a male hero reads as horror to the cishet male audience. Like, Venom didn't spend years and years being blatantly characterised as Spider-Man's creepy stalker ex because Marvel's writers were all closeted yaoi fans. That was meant to be scary – which of course doesn't mean you can't read it differently, but don't give them credit they don't deserve!

It seems like Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg have started working on their next movie together and I’m so back on my bullshit with these guys.

First Edgar and Simon both posted this to their separate instagram accounts.

Then Simon posted this a few months later. If you don’t know the song he attached to it, look it up. It’s very clear Simon chose it intentionally.

There’s no way to predict what it’s going to be about but I’ve heard whispers that it might lean more towards drama than their other works so I wouldn’t be surprised if it deals with mental health.

Both Simon and Nick have been very open about struggling with depression and trying to slowly kill themselves, Simon with alcohol and Nick with food, due to feeling isolated (Simon’s depression is more of a hormonal disorder while Nicks’s is a reaction to trauma and PTSD) which was why Gary was a depressed and suicidal alcoholic in The World’s End.

They’ve also been very open about their queerplatonic relationship that’s far deeper and more physical than a regular friendship.

By now most people know about them sharing a one-person bed for nine months out of necessity when they were young and occasionally sleep and cuddle in the same bed for comfort even to this day, but also when Nick’s mom died he collapsed on the floor of his hotel room crying and screaming for Simon who rushed in to hold him and it didn’t even occur to them that Nick was naked the whole time until afterwards.

But also having to acknowledge that while they’re each other’s biggest comfort they haven’t always been the best for each other when it came to coping with their mental health. They had to get better separately to be happy and healthy together later.

Simon especially has talked about how being part of the Mission Impossible franchise saved him because it surrounded him with people who knew how to help him overcome his alcohol addiction.

Seeing how both Simon and Nick likes to play roles that are adjacent to their own situations and Edgar very much encourages them to normalize talking about mental health as well as be ambassadors for non-sexual male intimacy I wouldn’t be surprised if they lean into that considering the post Simon made. Everything around that is a complete mystery tho.

Or maybe Simon just crash into a fence again 🤷

Batman owed Steph his secret identity the second he told her abusive, criminal father what HER secret identity was.

Batman owed her his secret identity when he told her Tim's identity while continuing to refuse to share his own.

Batman owed her the knowledge of his undercover aliases & this was even called out in canon itself when he agreed to letting her be Robin. That's not even his secret identity.

I don't think it makes any goddamned sense to have Robin not know your identity but I digress. There are reasons he should have given her his secret identity, but knowing his secret identity wouldn't have saved her, knowing about his secret mob oc persona whose identity he stole years ago would.

Korra and Marinette Dupain Cheng are both often hated by many members of their respective fandoms.

Korra is impulsive, aggressive and poorly socialised (through no fault of her own)- at least at the start- and these traits are often lauded and coddled in many white male characters, but many fans hate them in her, a young nonwhite woman.

Marinette is neurotic and anxious (and almost certainly neurodivergent in general) and plans ahead for Literally Everything, traits that are notably lauded in male characters such as Batman, and yet are hated in her, a young nonwhite girl .

Both Korra and Marinette were thrust into a massive power and responsibility that neither technically even asked for. Even so, both demonstrate quite exemplary competence with their power, but many nitpick them nonetheless ("But Aang wouldn't do that!" "Aang would never have lost his connection to the previous Avatars!" (without considering that Korra is living in a different time and society to Aang, and faced not one but MULTIPLE high-level villains, AND SHE IS NOT AANG! The point of LoK is that she is NOT AANG and shouldn't be!) ; "Marinette made the Worst Possible Decisions and should be dragged through the mud and never forgiven for it!" (she is 14, overwhelmed, and traumatised. If you can see through Chloe Bourgeois' behaviour and correctly identify her as an abuse victim, you can give Marinette the same grace).

Both Korra and Marinette were groomed and manipulated by much older men whom they trusted/ had faith in, and were forced to make difficult decisions in impossible circumstances, and yet many in their fandoms thinks that they would Totally Make the Correct Decisions in such circumstances. Here we see an interplay of subconscious or even overt misogyny and racism where a male or even white female counterpart would likely be forgiven or even praised for the exact same personality traits and/or decision making, yet Korra and Marinette are often held to a needlessly higher standard in comparison.
