growing up with a psychologist for a mother was so funny because my sister and i would be like “mo-om why do we have to go to bed now” and she would respond with a long explanation of the research on the effects of sleep on the brain and body followed by another explanation on permissive vs. authoritarian vs. authoritative parenting styles, with citations
this was actually really good in some instances though because i started having insomnia and intrusive thoughts very young and when little me was like “mom i don’t like the thoughts in my head but i can’t make them go away and i can’t sleep” she replied with “oh honey. active thought suppression never works. in fact, wegner et al. (1987) tested this when they told a bunch of people to talk about whatever they wanted, and they told half of them to try not to think about a white bear. people thought more about the white bear when they were trying not to think about it! but when they told the people to think about a red car whenever thoughts of the white bear came to mind, the people had a much easier time not thinking about the white bear. so you see, you can’t force the thoughts out of your mind. you just have to let them pass through, and pick something else that you want to focus on”
and so ever since i was a very little kid i knew how to deal with intrusive thoughts, I’ve had them my whole life but never developed ocd or senses of shame about them cause my mom did her phd on thought suppression and she knows what’s up

Hey, if anyone’s curious, this IS making a serious impact — this handbook was taught as standard practice for my EMT license course, as well as several other programs. A lot of new providers are being taught this as a matter of course.
[id: tweet by Black Britain (@theblkbrit) from 2020-07-02: “Medical Student - Malone Mukwende, creates a medical handbook for Black and Brown people. “The Second year student identified racial gaps during his studies. He explains that many resources refer to symptoms on white skin. “The handbook displays signs and symptoms on darker skin.” Underneath is a picture of the book: “Mind the Gap: a handbook of clinical signs on black and brown skin” by Mukwende M, Tamony P, and Turner M, with cover art that shows various skintones displayed in stripes next to each other like paint swatches. There is also a picture of Mukwende, a smiling young Black student with a pink button down and a stethoscope around his neck.]/end id.
Yep I finished residency in 2023 and we used this resource!! Making a real difference.

aggressive self hatred really is just as boring and self centred as aggressive ego. does anyone know how to make this realisation change anything
Hate that the term "post-nut clarity" gets applied to guilt and shame people feel after watching porn or having sex. These feelings aren't any more real or reasonable that the horniness was. You don't have clarity, you're just not horny anymore and grew up in a culture that told you to be ashamed of sex and masturbation.
It's also wild how often I see people talking about "post-nut clarity" when what they're describing is a drop.
It's more commonly talked about in bdsm spaces as subdrop, but you can drop as a dom or even just after vanilla sex or masturbation, especially if it was more intense than you normally experience.
A drop happens when you've been building up a lot of those feel-good chemicals in your brain during sex, then suddenly the sex is over and your brain overcompensates in trying to rebalance. You might feel depressed, anxious, regretful, ashamed. It can happen immediately after or even a few days after. This can happen even if you're normally a very sex-positive person.
It isn't post-nut clarity! You're either dealing with internalized shame towards sex in general or you're having a temporary chemical imbalance. Maybe even both! Pamper yourself after. Forgive yourself. The thoughts you're having in that moment aren't necessarily rational ones.
Be generous with yourself, do something comforting after sex - it's like a workout cooldown. Take it easy on yourself and give your brain something positive to focus on to ease into the loss of the chemical rush.
call me australian but i just think that everyone should be required to vote and every municipality should have the obligation to make it as easy for everyone to vote as possible
