11.4.20. California
Uber and Lyft spent $205 million to buy a labor law to continue underpaying their workers. Prop 22, America’s most expensive ballot campaign, prevents Uber and Lyft workers from being reclassified as “employees” under a new California labor law. The law requires an unprecedented 7/8ths majority in the state legislature to alter, and it severely limits workers’ ability to organize and negotiate. For companies looking to maximize profit through lower labor costs, they may soon be able to reclassify employees as “independent contractors” (or gig work).
not even a week into 2021 and companies are moving towards gig workers who are more underpaid as the result of the bill Prop 22 that Uber and Lyft paid to make law
3 weeks into Prop22 and the ramifications are as bad as labor groups warned. Instacart is firing every worker who voted to unionize and is terminating an additional 2,000 jobs. This action was illegal less than a month ago.
AUGUST 21, 2021 UPDATE
A California judge ruled Friday that parts of Prop. 22 are unconstitutional, rendering the ballot measure unenforceable.
Prop 22 has been ruled unconstitutional by a California Superior Court judge.
Uber has vowed to appeal.
“Californians overwhelmingly approved the measure, which won with 58%—“
That’s not an overwhelming majority!!! That’s just over half!! And y’know what? A good lot of those votes were bought by advertising, because the “vote prop 22” signs were fucking everywhere during voting season. You couldn’t go two feet without seeing one. And the people who didn’t do any research before voting? The people who said “I’m too tired/lazy/ignorant to look things up before voting?” The people who said “oh, I recognise this from those signs” are, I would bet, a good part of that majority that voted for prop 22.
This is why our voters need to be educated about the issues they’re voting for. This is why we need to be more candid about the things that are being voted for, and the language used in the ballots, and about everything else with the voting process. Otherwise, it’s just a matter of which side can buy more posters.

Have I shared this with y’all yet? 😘
I wish rich people went back to keeping artists as pets. Like when you’re wealthy enough you pick a cool weirdo to do regular commissions for you, and if you really want to flex on your peers, you’ve got several.
And you visit them every once in a while like “hello, I’ve paid for your rent and your tools, have you worked on that commission giant oil painting of me getting sucked off by my political opponent, who is unfortunately still the mayor of this town, like I requested?”
And your favourite feral art person looks up - mouth full of gravel and completely surrounded by art-related trash like “no, but I designed a helicopter.”
And you’re like “that’s fucking lit, the mayor doesn’t have a helicopter. Please carry on as you have.”
I think about this cake every day
