This is so terrible through? The man wrote a message to thank his audience for supporting him and you all just straight up bullied him? Why? Because you didn’t like his books? He was just trying to be approachable and express his gratitude. And after all these years people still think this is funny? This is borderline sexual harassment.

Also he had a large audience of mainly children and minors. Anyone searching for his posts could see this. It’s really gross for him and harmful to tons of children.

Thank you! This is not borderline sexual harassment. It IS sexual harassment with homophobic overtones, and it didn’t just hurt him. It hurt every child who read it. And then people got mad at him for defending himself, because it was “just a joke”. I’ve literally never read any of his work or watched any of his videos, but I’m absolutey repulsed by anyone who thinks this shit is funny.

If you think this was or is “funny” or was “worth it” to get post editing removed when it was a bad idea in the first place, stupid at best, please unfollow me. It is not funny to sexually harass a man, one who has a following made up of mostly children and minors, by doing this shit. I’ve never read anything he’s done personally, but this is plain wrong, especially when he’s so outspoken on mental illness, especially his own. Y'all accusing him of being a pedophile was just as fucked up. DO BETTER!

I could see people who weren’t on Tumblr for this (like I was) or young children when it occurred might think this is funny, but this isn’t the whole story. So shame on the person who made this viral again. Because of this post, which many people thought was real, John Green was not only bullied off Tumblr - but was suddenly and baselessly accused of child molestation. And even some of his own fans leaned into this edit and thought it was really funny. As someone who was a fan of his books as a teen and an ADULT when this occurred, I found this horrifying and basically left the nerd fighting community over it, which I was already outgrowing at 21. 

On top of that, he has severe OCD and has had a horrible time on social media and in public life since. He keeps a low profile now and really is only socially active on his YouTube channels in fear of further harassment. Hank carries all the other social media platforms and this was absolutely not the case before this incident. This is clearly a source of anxiety for him and I think he really took it personally what happened to him - and even if the original editor saw it as a joke, it wasn’t one to him, and it is sexual harassment. Doesn’t matter if the person was a minor, male or female. John isn’t without his faults and admittedly at times so pretentious he could be easily made fun of online, but no one deserves treatment like this on the internet this is a step too far. And he really is a truly interesting guy, his WNYC podcasts are some of the most creative public radio programing I’ve ever listened to and Turtles All The Way Down was a poignant portrayal of mental illness I really related to as someone who deals with intrusive and obsessive thoughts as part of bipolar depression on a daily basis. And why I support laws to prevent cyberbullying and libel and defamation of character (which this would also have qualified as) that are much stronger in other countries than in the US.

 Honestly aside from Tumblr being partially at fault at the start for allowing this, something I hate about the internet *the most* is it encourages being socially and politically informed but includes the hypocrisy of at the same time committing performative actions like this for likes and social media engagement at the expense of others at the same time. Often the people who do this stuff to people are keyboard warriors who argue with people over the internet about social and political issues with the nuance of SNL’s Drunk Girl sketches while bullying people online. Be a better human than this guys.
