Not paying bills
I need to order this card in bulk, and then have someone else mail them out to my friends, because mailing things is currently part of why I am having a nervous breakdown.
WE need to start a support group for people who can’t handle mail or phone calls and are just one off of losing their mind.
I can’t handle phone calls but I’ll mail all your stuff
I have two bills I have to pay and I”m like OMG I HAVE TO DO THAT OMG HOW DO BILLS AND MAIL AND STUFF. I know how bills and mail and stuff. I just can’t bills and mail and stuff.
Oh hell no.
I have been playing video games since 1980. I have been making them since 1997. To anyone telling me the games I enjoy (on nearly every genre/platform out there) and the games I make (and I have made many, across nearly every genre/platform out there) are not “real games” , I have only this to say:
GET OFF MY FUCKING LAWN.
(Also absolutely applies to the variant of “women don’t belong in/play games”, with added orbital strikes for flavor.)
Reposting as a blog so this can be reblogged.
Question from anonymous:
Have you ever heard about the word “style”? Honestly, while I do agree that artists like Liefield are complete hacks, drawing bodies in “unrealistic ways” isn’t wrong by default. Or are you just going to completely dismiss...
Nice redraws on these comic covers. I have issues, though. I agree that looking like you have no internal organs, or that your back bone is made of rubber is pretty bad, but comic book artists have to ensure that covers are as appealing as possible to entice new readers to pickup their issues. The problem I have with some of your redraws is that, for some of them, everything looks too static and undynamic. Sure, they're anatomically correct, but sometimes, you have to skew bodies to sell.
Yes, but.
An enticing cover doesn’t have to be sexualised to be enticing. There are plenty of artists that make kickass covers with great women looking awesome. This blog is a repository of the ones that are twisting for the sake of T&A, and I do agree some of my redraws are much weaker than they could have been, and that’s because 1- I’m not perfect, 2- I’m always learning and 3- redrawing over another existing drawing stiffens up everything. I’m trying to keep roughly the same pose as what was originally drawn and showing you don’t have to thrust out her ass or arch her chest out to make something appealing.
Listen, I do this blog partly as an educational thing. I want people to develop a critical eye, question what they see, shift the status quo, and if they are artists, pick up a few tips along the way. There’s a reason I keep these sketches loose and unfinished. I’m not trying to comment on people’s style, I’m commenting on their posing choices, and urging people to rethink how they approach art of female characters. I’m not saying “my way or the highway”, I’m saying “it could be better and here’s a suggestion”.
In the recent redraw I did, I fixed Greg Land’s cover because the art wasn’t well composed, but it wasn’t a sexualised cover. As soon as I fixed the legs on SW, I realised the composition would now be crap because the legs would be in front of Silk. I still plodded on. The Manara cover I fixed because the posing WAS sexualised, the pose made me feel uncomfortable, and I wasn’t the only one who felt that way about it. I have nothing against the man as an artist or against his skills. I have nothing against erotic art. The rendering was very nice (if the costume was meant as body paint). I just argued that his posing choice was inappropriate for this cover.
I’ll lead you to my post about style for more discussion on the matter. Look in particular at my comments on Joe Mad to get what I’m saying.
Because why aren’t there more tough, older, intelligent, weathered female characters designed nowadays? Finished the portrait of a new concept! #art #painting #badass #warrior
Loop
How much you wanna bet that a good majority of those 47%, spend most of their time playing Candy Crush or the latest Facebook game? They’re not the ones buying up the next Call of Duty or Halo or whatever AAA game is hot at the moment. So, I don’t see how it’s particularly relevant.
Right, but who gives a shit what you think?
Damn, gailsimone, damn.

The Real Women of Steel
Fantastic images of real soldiers from different parts of the world.

In case any of you wondered how actual modern warrior women (who are not amused by their portrayal in media) actually look!
~Ozzie
My boyfriend called me while I was at work to tell me about it. He sent me an email with pictures of this new “soldier” and I had to show the women I work with (also Marines, current or former). We couldn’t believe it wasn’t some sort of joke. One of my coworkers even said, “Oh, yeah; she’ll definitely last in combat so long as she isn’t worried about a tit popping out.
Women in the military interviewed about the portrayal of women in games. Specifically for the quote, Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain. Recommending reading the whole thing, as there’s some great stuff in there. (via kierongillen)
For those of you who live under a rock, the female soldier character in question is Quiet from new MGS game.
Hope it’s self-explanatory why actual women in military aren’t amused by her costume design.

A reminder that early in the Metal Gear franchise, female soldiers looked like this:

My new mail + scalemail creation which I wore to the Chronicles of Kandorya mass LARP this weekend. Had a great time despite the rain! It was really awesome!!!
My favorite scalemail (and chainmail!) creation so far, hands down! Fashionable and functional at the same time, LOVE IT!

Why, yes. Yes, I am a character designer that works in the game industry. How could you tell???
THIS SO MUCH THIS I pointed this out in

and it’s so very true. And wrong.
So yesterday I found out that Randy Queen (artist of DarkChylde) filed a bunch of DMCA takedown notices to Tumblr to remove posts of his covers on this blog (the entire posts, not just the images). I’ve also gotten messages from other users that he’s had their stuff removed too (redraws, etc that have been featured here). Non-critical Tumblr posts of his art/covers and those praising his work appear to be unaffected.
I’m writing this to let other people who run sites that might have criticized his work ( thehawkeyeinitiative, bikiniarmorbattledamage, boobsdontworkthatway, repair-her-armor, comicartcorrections etc) know that he seems to use DMCA takedowns to remove pages that are critical of his work. And, to be prepared that he might have Tumblr remove your posts without warning (there was no prior communication of any kind, or conventional requests for removal).
Also, if you’ve submitted redraws of his stuff to these sites, you might want to ask them to put them private for now (if he complains about a submission you’ve made, Tumblr will count it as a complaint against your account).
To date, Mr. Queen is the only artist who has taken this kind of action - other artists and publishers seem to understand Escher Girls & other similar sites are fair use and criticism, and that fan discussion, positive or negative, is important and helpful to their business. (In fact, the creators I’ve interacted with are either fans of EG, or expressed disagreement but know that it’s fan criticism.)
If anybody is curious about what his DarkChylde art looked like and why they were featured on this blog you can find them here.
(Don’t harass him on his Facebook or Tumblr by the way. I’m not interested in having a feud with him, just letting people know what’s going on.)
Update: He has now filed a DMCA takedown with Tumblr to remove this post. This post is still up on Escher Girls, but every single reblog of it has been removed.
CW: Graphic abuse, domestic violence
comicpanels submitted:
Not too sure if this is exactly Escher Girls material, but I found it extremely unsettling. These are on consecutive pages from Jennifer Blood #31, and is the reveal that a newly introduced character is in a physically abusive relationship. Which seems like a really, really bad time to sexualize the character in question.
(if you publish this, I’m sure it needs content warning tags, it looks like “domestic violence” and “abuse” are commonly used for this kind of thing)
(picture and additional commentary under the cut, CW: graphic abuse, domestic violence)
