what are you waiting for? someone to grant you permission? the perfect and permanent emotion? a shooting star to magic away every problem you have or ever have had? alright, wait away then. but no one is going to live your life for you while you wait to become someone else
Let people do drugs let people transition let people have weird freaky sex let people get stupid tattoos let people get cosmetic surgery let people eat junk food let people get their tubes tied let people jerk off let people wear ugly clothes and have outdated hairstyles let people do whatever the hell they want with their own bodies why tf do you care so much????
it actually feels good as fuck to tilt your head at a slight angle when you don't understand something. the animals were right
the persecution of lefthandedness is insane to think about because it was so intense for so long, in some places still is, without any clear profit motivation. sheer love of the game. as late as the 70s at least they were smacking my stepdad's hands for it with a wooden ruler at school, to this day he's in weird ambidexterity situation where he's not great with either side and notably clumsy due to poor hand-eye coordination. just wtf
It is fascinating to me that people also think of handedness as an example of bigotry that just...went away. As you note, it...hasn't in some places. I know people who grew up in the mid-late 90s who still had this problem.
But also, and this is really important to keep in mind regarding bigotry that still causes in many ways larger problems, that the structural problems are not actually fixed.
If you go to any computer lab or public library, the mice will be on the right side of the computer. Sometimes they can be moved. Sometimes they can't. Many computer mice are curved to only fit in right hands.
It is impossible to find lefthanded scissors without going to a specialty store, because most scissor makers don't even make them. And it's not just a matter of grip; the slicing side of the blades is obscured if you use righty scissors in your left hand, so your cut is off.
All those signing pads with the little chained styluses? Almost always on the right side, often not even long enough to stretch to the left. Makes signing for lefties extremely difficult.
I caused actual muscular problems in college having to twist around in order to write at right-handed desks in college when there weren't enough lefty desks--and there never were. Some classrooms didn't even have a single one.
I could go on.
But the point is, bigotry isn't just a mindset shift. People can't just decide they're not bothered by that particular difference anymore and everything's fine, because society is still structured and designed to cause problems for marginalized people. And they're never even going to notice all the little ways their life is bent to convenience them that inconveniences others.
as an archivist I am begging you
put dates on everything
don’t believe digital stuff is preserved forever - if it’s really important (documents, photos, etc) print it out
name your files accurately I know it sucks but please
don’t destroy the original just bc you scanned it
rubber cement is the devil’s adhesive use photo corners and quit gluing shit
you will NOT remember write it down
if you staple things to the inside of a folder I will find you
your public library probably has equipment to digitize old media for free or can at least get you connected with somewhere that does!
begin again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and
hate to break this to you but if you call yourself self aware but you are only aware of your faults and never acknowledge your strengths you are not self aware. you just repackaged your self hatred
also while i'm frankensteinposting i would like to take the opportunity to complain about how the universal movies have left the general public with the impression that the creature is basically just a very large toddler when the original novel has a line where victor warns walton about how the creature is so eloquent that it's dangerous to listen to him because he's so persuasive. the creature learned fluent french from listening to secondhand lessons through a crack in the wall. he taught himself to read and immediately started kinning SATAN from PARADISE LOST. he's so so so smart!
also he became intensely cruel and violent because literally every single human interaction he had was cruel and violent. either people would scream and run away/faint or physically attack him. he saved a little girl from a rising river and her dad shot him for it. violence begets violence. i think if he wasn't met with violence at every turn, he wouldn't have become violent, but he did, and so he was. it was a choice. it was a decision. it was a moment where he decided, fuck this, they treat me like the villain, so i'm the villain and i'm going to burn your fucking house down.
i feel like that robs the story of so much of its potency. not a child, not an animal, not something innocent and unknowing of its own strength. an intelligent, destitute, abused person, choosing to turn that anger and misery outward. that's so much more compelling in my opinion.
Oh and I want to fight all the Gen Z kids who are like ‘teehee, we’ll just do lavender marriages instead!’ Some of us are adults who want equal rights and protections under the law of our land.
Yeah, we wanted legal marriages because your spouse's horrid family could show up, get you kicked out of the hospital, steal all of their stuff, and there was nothing you could do about it.
When my wife went in for surgery before we got married, it was me and her horrifically homophobic mother in the surgery center waiting room and I knew without a doubt that if anything went wrong, I would be expected to leave without any access to her belongings, the pictures of us on her phone, or the funeral itself, and the obituary would not mention me or our relationship at all.
And that was after almost a decade of marriage equality! The fear and anxiety leading up to that surgery and the recovery process after reinforced for me just how important marriage can be. It’s a form of self-determination.
Lest we forget

Not an invitation to cocoon yourself in a self-care bubble for four years, but a reminder to the 24/7 worriers that you can literally write "To Do on Monday: Worry about ________" on a post-it note and stop worrying about it for one day while you recharge.
Another point: Both your mental health and your ability to resist will be improved by finding a community. A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved. And apes together strong.
And again, not an invitation to cocoon yourself in a 'self care' bubble. Self care is important, cus it keeps you able to resist, but then you have to use it TO resist.
Self care and survival is NOT 'the best resistance' it's the first step TO resistance.

pisses me off that gender is just pattern recognition thats been drilled into us since birth. why didnt they teach us something important instead like which snakes are venomous
the fact that im supposedly wble to tell if someones a girl or boy by one glance but i have to google is a spider can kill me is so incredibly shortsighted
