Governments around the world are censoring—and criminalizing—the currents in which fanworks flow.
Our latest is live! ⚖️ @bookshop reports on the increasing criminalization of creativity around the world—especially queer and/or erotic works, and including fanworks. Recent rulings against an Australian erotica writer and a Russian fic writer, the confirmation that danmei writer Mo Xiang Tong Xiu was imprisoned for her work, and growing repression in the U.S., where many global platforms for creative works are based, are all signals of just how worrying the current climate is:
With a barrage of new and expanded laws plus harsher enforcement of existing ones, governments around the globe are criminalizing more and more forms of creative expression. It’s no longer far-fetched or hyperbolic to say that at any given moment, depending on what country you’re in and what government you’re up against, individual works of fiction—including fanworks—could be criminalized for being queer, or pornographic, or generally deviant. How far the law typically extends seems to be entirely arbitrary, but in recent years, we’ve seen regressive censorship and punishment nipping at the heels of fanworks. Online platforms and payment processors then often comply with these laws by instituting sweeping content bans, further marginalizing women, queer and trans people, and sex-positive communities—the currents in which fandom flows.

I’m convinced if ppl on this site knew how crappy gifs look before you color them properly, they would appreciate editors more
for context reasons, this is how a gif I used in a recent gifset looks like without any adjustments/coloring whatsoever:
and here it is afterwards:
I truly don’t think people realize how dingy and dark most movies and tv shows actually are so they can’t appreciate the work and skill it takes to make gifs look the way your brain “remembers” it looking.
Another before and after example:
This gif needed 6 different adjustment layers, not including the sharpening process, which is its own separate challenge. The blue window was also changed to green to keep the palette more consistent and to reduce the range of colors needed, because a wider range of colors generally results in worse gif quality since gifs only support a max of 256 (compared to the millions your monitor can display).
yeah…
I was already going to reblog this because gifmakers need all the love, but the little lambie made sure that I was definitely going to do it.
dark scenes are truly the bane of every gifmaker’s soul
The ecosystem of tumblr fandom relies on gif makers - put some respect on their names!!
Longtime readers may be aware of how much I relish an excuse to bully a company, so I'm sharing the wealth;
Clothing company Patagonia is currently sueing drag queen Pattie Gonia for "irreparable” harm to their brand.
To be clear; Pattie named herself after the region in South America.
So Pattie is asking people to politely ask Patagonia to drop the lawsuit.
I'm extending the invitation to all of you, because sueing a drag queen for 'infringement' in the current political cultural landscape is vile. Especially a drag queen who has raised millions of dollars for non-profits, uses her platform to raise awareness for climate activism, and fully aligns with Patagonia's apparent climate-conscious mission statement.
They're claiming they're sueing for $1. They're actually asking her to stop using her name, and pay over $1 million in legal fees. They're straight up harassing her.
In contrast, drag queen Jan Sport has a Jansport bag line. It's that easy to just... work with a queen.
Anyway. Be respectful(ish), but feel free to be annoying on Patagnoia's socials, asking them to 'DROP THE LAWSUIT'
I think they have a twitter and tiktok too!
This post keeps making me cry laughingg
For fans in Kenya, Nigeria, and Burundi, “uncringing” non-English fanfiction is an endeavor in decolonialism.
Our latest piece is live! The brilliant Soila Kenya writes about the dominance of English in fandom and especially fanfiction spaces, and why for her and the fellow fans she interviewed from Kenya, Nigeria, and Burundi, this is partly about the global dominance of English-language pop culture, but especially about the legacies of colonialism:
The deep psychological imprints of this language disparity remain. And therefore, when I encountered fanfiction, it didn’t even occur to me that there were fanfics written in any language but English, let alone Swahili or any of the 42 indigenous languages in Kenya.
