field study rant
Towards the end of the month long field study I recently finished I inevitably started my period. Since I get severe periods, I got permission to rest from the instructors. They insisted on taking me to the clinic to "get a professional's opinion" where the doctor pushed on my ovaries and informed me that in fact, I was having a bad period...
The proposed treatment was an injection of ibuprofen, so I said "no way wtf, that's completely unnecessary. I'm taking a prescribed dose of oral ibuprofen anyway." But I was told since I'd refused treatment I'd be sent back to the states 5 days away from completing the course (this violates the policy I signed btw). After working my ass off for almost the full month, they told me "you can get the shot and stay, or not and go home." So, I was coerced into agreeing to receive "treatment" for a benign, non-emergency situation with what actually turned out to be a couple shots- not only only ibuprofen, but additionally an opiate and a steroid which I was initially unaware of until I sought out the doctor’s note. A month later my body is clearly still detoxing and I'm seeking treatment for how that shit is continuing to fuck me up (physically and emotionally)!!
people maybe considering studying with The Organization of Tropical Studies- consider the fact that you may be given an ultimatum when it comes to your choice to receive healthcare.
