Happy Juneteenth! Here’s some info about Juneteenth becoming a national holiday & what that means for us.
Give us a history lesson
This is so empowering to see proving that despite how hard the churches and Canadian government tried. They failed to "kill the Indian in the child" and that we will continue to flourish in our beautiful culture ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽 and we will never give up
i love straight people because i’ll be doubting my sexuality then talk to straight people for 2 seconds and get struck by a bolt of queerness so strong it powers me for the rest of the semester. god bless
why do black people use you in the wrong context? such is "you ugly" instead of "you're ugly" I know u guys can differentiate, it's a nuisance
you a bitch
It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.
So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.
What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.
In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.
This is the most intellectual drag I’ve ever read.
I liveeeee for this
Put some respect on AAVE!
Side note on this: all those college conservatives saying liberal professors are shutting them down because of their conservative ideas and refusing to hear otherwise? In my experience the “shut down” is just being asked to DEFEND their position for the first time and not accepting shitty half thought out “proofs” that fall apart on their own.
Derek Black, son of a Grand Wizad of the KKK, broke free of White Nationalism because of this very effect.
This right here is why it’s so important that college education not be locked behind a giant shitty paywall. The fact that only kids who come from money are given access to spaces that teach and encourage critical thinking isn’t a fucking coincidence
Yeah or you have to go into crushing debt just to have the opportunity of it.
In 1951, an African-American woman named Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer. She was treated at Johns Hopkins University, where a doctor named George Gey snipped cells from her cervix without telling her. Gey discovered that Lacks’ cells could not only be kept alive, but would also grow indefinitely.
For the past 60 years Lacks’ cells have been cultured and used in experiments ranging from determining the long-term effects of radiation to testing the live polio vaccine. Her cells were commercialized and have generated millions of dollars in profit for the medical researchers who patented her tissue.
Lacks’ family, however, didn’t know the cell cultures existed until more than 20 years after her death.
In 2010 we spoke to Medical writer Rebecca Skloot who examines the legacy of Lacks’ contribution to science — and effect that has had on her family — in her bestselling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,
Now, 62 years later the Lacks family has given consent to this controversial medical contribution. Researchers who wish to use “HeLa” cells now have to submit a request and proposal that will be reviewed by the Lacks family. This new agreement is in the interest of respecting the family’s privacy, though, they still will not profit financially from any medical study.
This is a remarkable story, both medically and ethically, about the rights we have to our bodies, even beyond the grave.

News- 0:52Interview w/ Zoie Nagelhout - 21:02Interview w/ Adepero Oduye - 38:18Community - 54:22 SPOILER TALK: 0:52-9:5255:36-59:01Question of the Week: What was your reaction when you saw Sam Wilson put on the Captain America costume for the first time?
I don’t feel like figuring out how to download this to snip the relevant part, but you can hear Adepero talk about the flirting with Sarah and Bucky at 48:56, which includes a cute story about a take where she did something that caught Sebastian by surprise (which is probably part of the cut scenes that Marvel is hording).
This interview is so cute!!! I loved when Adepero mentioned people “speculating” about Bucky’s time in Wakanda. He opened up his mind ❤️
Was looking for pics for a moodboard and saw this in the comments of an article written THREE YEARS AGO about fans being divided over shipping WP. These comments were made in in 2020 and 2021. Shuri is still the only MCU character alive for which aging is a completely nonexistent phenomenon, apparently. Why am I not surprised 🙄
Fun comment in another picture said Shuri “DON’T NEED NO MAN!”, and a couple of people were saying they hope she will turn out to be aro/ace. Which, that’s valid, there’s absolutely no aro/ace representation in the MCU and barely any in other media. But why is it the genius, black princess that has to bear that representation? And why demonize people that want to ship her? She’s a whole adult in the current MCU timeline. And in comic canon, she and Eden Fesi are very much a thing, so… I’m confused. I know I’m preaching to the choir. Apparently, I just wanted to find something to be irritated about lol. Oh well.
Back to writing fanfiction lol
Someone literally in the comments of this post saying, and I quote, “she died in Infinity War so she is still canonically 16.” 🙄 What math is that? So if Shuri was 16 in BP, the timeline goes like this: BP takes place in 2015, Infinity War takes place in 2018. Everyone who was blipped returned in 2023. So Shuri just failed to age in the three years that she actually was alive between BP and IW? When are people just going to mind their business and stop policing shipping? Don’t we have more important things, real things, to get outraged about? I’m not even mad, just annoyed.
@marvel–unsolved She was always 18 in BP meaning in IW she was 20/21 anyway.
Remember when Vulture magazine saw these two adult characters as being a bit thirsty?
@georgethecat YES THANK YOU 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Coming back to this thread.
I find it interesting still that when you tell the audience Shuri was 18 (FYI, her MCU dob is 1998) when she & Bucky meet (MEET, they are not even hooking up? WNBA star Maya Moore met her husband at 18 and a decade+ later, they got married. It happens?)
That they claim it is still not a good ship. And I agree, the age gap between 18 and 30+ is a big one. (And yes, sure he is “106” who looks like 30+; Thor is “1500+” and looks 30+ and dated a PhD student who was, what, 26? No one came after Thor for that massive age gap relationship)
Yet... she ages too? Unless Shuri is the only character in the entire MCU to not age, which is highly unlikely as her actress is now 27, will be 28 in July. There is no way she will continue playing Shuri as an 18 year old. (By the way, the actress, Miki Ishikawa, that played Leah, who Bucky went on a date with in the first episode of Falcon & Winter Soldier is only two years older than Letitia.)
What about the age gap between the actors? 11 years, which is much less than the 17 year age gap between Liz Olsen (32) and Paul Bettany (49). Wanda started out as a “teen”/kid and is now married to Vision.
So before you harass people about it, maybe consider the reasons it really makes you upset.
Drag this woman to the end of time 😈

Context: George Floyd's murderer is convicted on 3 counts. Afterwards, Nancy Pelosi makes a distraction of herself with offensively tone-deaf white-a-cism while expressing support for verdict.
