Mike Wheelers wasn't or isn't ever a gay character. Just because someone who is queer has a crush on you, doesn't mean they have to be gay too. I don't know why so many fans are trying to make a straight character like Mike Wheeler to be gay or bi just because Will liked him.

nerdy mike wheeler gets paired with popular girl el hopper for an auto shop project restoring an old bmw, and he spends the first week convinced she only signed up because it would look fun on her transcript. then she correctly diagnoses an engine problem before he does, gets grease on her cheek without caring, and insists on blasting music while they work. somewhere between arguing over paint colors, laughing in the school parking lot after hours, and watching her take shameless selfies with their project car, mike realizes two things: she’s way smarter than he gave her credit for… and he has a massive crush on her. meanwhile, el has known he was cute since day one.

Will needed an independence arc. He never fully developed an identity separate from Mike. His need for support is understandable given his trauma and isolation, but his emotional wellbeing often became too dependent on mike’s attention and validation instead of his own sense of self.

Will’s season 5 independence arc was much needed, because it finally allowed him to start separating his sense of self from his infatuation with Mike and focus on who he is outside of that relationship.

No but do people realize the reason that Mike and El's romance was so intense was because the party was so tight knit and all loved each other that much?

Like, all of them (El included) went all in to find Will. Lucas got insanely jealous of El but set aside his pride to help her and made peace with her and Mike. Dustin bound the group together despite believing he was the least liked of the entire party. Mike talked with Lucas over walkie talkies every night and planned hours long campaigns and spearheaded the plan to save Will and dispelled all of Dustin's intense self-doubt . El revisited a place that traumatized her to help save a boy because it was important to her friends.

Mike and El are 1000X more intense than other people in romantic love because they are like 1000X more intense in their other relationships. Just fucking look at their friendships.
