I've been replacing negative words like dumb/stupid/idiot with the word silly and it's been helping me be kinder to myself
"that was a dumb thing to do" nope! Just a silly mistake
"I'm such an idiot" no! Just silly!

I'm still depressed but it's been making me feel better sometimes. I'm smart, and sometimes I am silly.

After years of estrangement, Colt decides to get back in contact with his twin. As they start talking again, Colt realizes that he knows nothing about Ryland anymore. He aims to fix that.

Colt’s though process/The Garden
General Warnings
Flicker deals with complex relationship dynamics between family members, romantic partners, and platonic attachments. Do not take all of my depictions of these relationships as healthy, a lot of them aren't.
Flicker also deals with references to patricide, childhood trauma, and child abuse. Partially due to the fact that this is a ColtLand Gentry au and thus deals with Court's backstory through the eyes of his little brother.
Manipulation is a major theme in the main conflict! Learning that the image one has of past events is the wrong image is incredibly destabilizing and Flicker will deal with the aftermath.
Several characters struggle with their mental health and Flicker will include depictions of c-ptsd, passive suicidal ideation, discussion of past suicidal behavior, hallucinations, and intrusive thoughts. There is currently one panic attack depicted in somewhat of a dangerous environment. Nothing will be graphicly described and support for the struggling characters is present.
While I didn’t initially want to include flashbacks, I am trying my best to provide an accurate representation of the trauma faced by these characters. As such, some flashbacks will be depicted.
If I ever sensationalize or misrepresent something in a way that is harmful, please feel free to yell at me.
That being said, I will never hurt the dog. <3

Do you think Ryland ever visited one of Colt's sets once or twice, and each time every five minutes he'd get mistaken for his brother to an almost comical degree?
It became less comical for Colt the one time the stunt crew were rushing and grabbed (a very flustered) Ryland and tried to hook him onto a rig, thinking it was Colt.
The way he ran up screaming, "DAN THAT'S NOT ME, THAT’S RYLAND! DO NOT DROP MY BROTHER OFF A 40-FOOT BUILDING PLEASE!"
Jody and Ryland still laugh about it. Colt still gets anxiety thinking about it

I love that since Project Hail Mary, everyone is just going around collecting Ryan Goslings like they’re Pokemon.

Except, critically, at bedtime.
Ravings and urges get miscoded over time. Let’s say you’re thirsty, and you live in a strawberry field. Strawberries contain some water and a bunch of sugar so, over time, you may start to crave strawberries when you are thirsty because you get a reward and some relief in shorter time from the need starting than the trek to the stream. This can happen for every need: sleep, food, whatever.
Trevor Noah has a great tip, that when he craves ice cream at night he breaks it down into parts: I want something cold, I want something sweet. He drinks a glass of cold water then waits to see if he still has the ice cream craving. Usually he doesn’t.
So listening to your body isn’t “follow every urge” but “decompose the urge to discover the underlying need.”
If you always feel like getting cozy in bed you may be: cold, dehydrated, and/or malnourished (maybe a need for high calories that are bioaccessible…not processed).
If you do not feel tired at bedtime you may: need to eat dinner earlier because your body is still digesting, need to exercise or go outside more during the day, get the fuck off your screen for an hour so your brain can enter sleep mode.

P.S. notice i said nothing about neurodivergence. Not that it’s not a likelihood but the over-pathologization of behaviors prevents us from taking simple actions to improve our wellbeing. Also, these tips are pretty accessible and applicable to most brain variations.

I understand that most normal functioning brains need regular engagement to maintain a bond. Absence doesn’t diminish my affection. My silence isn’t neglect or disinterest. It’s time blindness and object impermanence. The contact gap is purely neurological, not emotional. Thank you for being patient with my inconsistency and holding a seat in your heart for me.
