this is page 119 of the titan's curse. it's definitely a matter of wordplay, but "ill do my best" is NOTHING close to a surefire promise. he never promised.

thats not to say i don't understand where the confusion came from. this is page 290 of house of hades.

rick riordan himself says it-- but it. just. isn't. like i NEED to talk about this cause i keep seeing "percy promised" thrown around the fandom. "i'll do my best" isn't a promise. percy never promised.

also the second excerpt is from Nico’s POV. Percy promised he would do his best, and for young Nico it was equivalent to a promise to keep her safe. or maybe he remembers it wrong, which would be fair considering how young and emotional he was. already in the titan’s curse he said “you promised!” because he believed he did. and to be fair, op, Percy DID promise something, Nico may just have forgotten what.

or maybe he didn’t, and he was so impressed by Percy that he was sure that his best would be enough. but it wasn’t. which meant that either Percy wasn’t so great, or that he hadn’t tried enough. but he had promised he would. Nico was a kid, he can’t be blamed, but the fandom can’t think like him.

also she was annoying because Percy found her annoying, but the books were pretty clear that they were in fact very similar. in TTC she was also a young teen, she was also worried about Annabeth (although it definitely didn’t show as much), she was struggling with coming back after 6 years, she was dealing with Luke’s betrayal. just like Percy, she was Going Through Stuff, and just like him, she was a hot-headed powerful demigod with an uncertain future. it made sense for them to piss each other off, specially since, besides all their similarities, they would usually disagree with how to deal with stuff.

sometimes the fandom expects all characters to be morally perfect at all times but these are teens. was Thalia right for blaming Percy after Annabeth went missing? of course not. but who, at fifteen, has never lashed out wrongfully because they were upset about something? Thalia is a very interesting character and her biggest flaw is having so little scenes after TTC.

hey remember that scene in the last olympian when they are fighting the drakon and Percy watches a Ares’s kid get eaten alive? and how he immediately moves on from what must have been one the most traumatizing scenes he has ever seen until that point because he is in the middle of a battle? and how he can’t even process this later because he then watches another friend die? and then he keeps the combat mode on afterwards too and just keeps going?

and hey remember how that was one of Clarisse’s siblings? Clarisse, who had turned her back on her camp, when then joined the battle but too late to save her best friend and (at least) one of her siblings? the latter, who she probably wouldn’t even realize until later, because there was no body.

but remember how their other siblings were there? the ones who had wanted to join the fight? and also watched their sibling get eaten and just had to move on because otherwise that would be their fate as well?

so does camp half blood have a cemetery bc i was just thinking abt how absolutely horrifically horrible it would be seeing all those graves after the war decorated by (literal children) their siblings and other campers and walking by them everyday when your living your life

or having to go to the mortal parents of those kids and saying “your child died during the war but we have their body do you want it” and the parent either accepting or denying and if accepting SEEING THEIR CHILDS MUTILATED BODY before doing a funeral service that probably doesn’t involve the kids from chb

like selina for example with her dad and his chocolate or whatever having someone from chb come to his house knock on his door and say “i’m sorry but selina died a hero fighting during the great war” then giving him her body after having poison spat right in her face

that or like imagine you haven’t had contact with your kid in a long while then one day you get a knock on the door and it’s not your kid but it’s a different kid telling you their dead ???? you had no idea a war was even going on ?? and now your 10yr old is gone

like i know a lot of kids don’t really talk to their mortal parents so they have a permanent spot at chb but there’s also kids with one foot in and one foot out and that’s so CRAZY like if percy had died he probably would’ve been buried in the mortal world sally would’ve had camp there fs but he wouldn’t have been buried at camp (personally i don’t think he would’ve at least)

how many kids were buried in the mortal world and how many would’ve actually wanted that also like that’s so devastating

especially if those kids were actually close to their mortal parents like parents who are like sally in that way who ask how it happened why it happened who else was hurt how many died like the parents who actually cared :(

A kid who didn’t talk to their mortal parent is already a sad scenario but imagine a parent who doesn’t even know their kid is a demigod (like Piper’s dad). How do you even explain that they died during summer camp? Maybe make up an accident (which is so unfair to both the kid and the parent), like it happened with Jason, but how does this not bring in a lawsuit? Do they just use the Mist to make them confused?

Also, I was thinking about how, in canon, they burn their shrouds. I’d imagine that if the kid has a living and contactable parent that maybe they would burn a empty/symbolic one and return the body to the parent. But how do you do this if there are no remains? How do you explain that their kid is dead and have nothing to show for it? Do they use the Mist to cover this too? And yes I’m talking about Beckendorf, Michael, and that one Ares kid who got eaten alive by the drakon.

And just to wrap this trainwreck, although the lack of a cemetery is better for a children’s camp, there should be a memorial with their names engraved. These kids can’t just be forgotten like that.

At first, it was like the other ones. They all turn into stone. Aaravos grasps them and hold them between his fingers. They are his pawns.

But now, Claudia has embraced Aaravos and his cause. He sees her as his daughter. She is herself, and his hand is open, welcoming. But he has no reason to hold her or try to control her. It’s her own will and she won’t try to flee.

“percy would have wanted to get revenge over jason’s death” this, “this could have been a dark!percy moment” that. maybe but frank already did this. he got their revenge, he got his dark moment. percy received the news very late. people had already grieved and taken revenge. there wasn’t anything for him to do besides deal with his own grief.

we talk about how percy denying a quest for the first time could lead him to feel guilt for not being there with jason, but he wasn’t there for the “what happened right after” part either. for the first time, percy got exactly what he wanted: not being the prophecy kid. and he got everything that comes with it too, including only learning about what has happened once it’s over. and yeah, he definitely didn’t expect that part and would have to learn how to deal with it.

i love how in heroes of olympus, there’s a boat full of couples (+leo☺️). and yet even if you didn’t know when each couple started dating, it’s so blatantly obvious that percy and annabeth have been together the longest, and are the most serious

cause frank and hazel are still pretty nervous/unsure with each other. they JUST started dating, and are so pure and adorable. they just haven’t quite figured out the romance part yet

and jason and piper have their moments, but they’re just so… distant. like not physically, of course, but they just don’t really seem to connect on a deep level. and they aren’t super affectionate, at least not physically or openly. piper is constantly unsure about where they’re at, and while jason has thoughts about how great piper is, he doesn’t openly show his feelings too often.

but percabeth? they’re the oldest in age (physically), have known each other the longest, and have been romantically committed to each other for the most time. they act like they’ve been together for eternity, which is funny since they were technically only dating for 4 months before percy got abducted. but they just have such a deep history together and such an intense connection. they’re in it for the long run. there’s no doubt or uncertainty - and it shows. like…annabeth is so wife girlfriend. there are so many funny/cute little moments, like her scolding him for putting too much syrup on his pancakes, and telling him to take a shower when he smells bad. and when percy suggests him and jason should go on a dangerous quest instead of annabeth and piper, instead of being like “omg he cares so much about me😍” (which hazel and piper would have done) annabeth is like “what seaweed brain?? you think two guys can do better than two girls??” and percy is immediately like “uh uh NO nope i definitely do NOT think that!!” he knows better. the immediate fear is so husband boyfriend of him. they simultaneously have the most disagreements (remember when percy called annabeth out when she thought she should navigate through rome alone, and basically called her stupid for thinking it was a good idea, and then they argued and had a face-off, which percy won) - while also being the most lovey dovey (they’re constantly putting their hands on each other - annabeth putting her hand on his chest to calm him down, putting their hands on each other’s arms for support, percy having his arm around her when they’re at the edge of the ship, always giving each other a kiss on the mouth or the cheek when they separate, etc). and they have no issues sneaking off in the middle of the night to do some talking and kissing. and quite frankly, making out in front of piper in BoO (remember that? when piper got super uncomfortable at how long their kiss was lasting, and then annabeth let out, and i quote, “grunt-whimpers”). they are just so natural and comfortable with each other. piper says it herself.

i just think it’s so funny. little frazel being adorable and blushing when they hold hands, jiper is happy to be dating but they’re also a little angsty and uncertain, and then there’s percabeth just being the old married couple they are. (and leo is being cute and fixing stuff)

percabeth act like an old married couple because they already bickered and cared deeply for each other before being a couple, and I love the fact that becoming a couple didn’t change that dynamic at all.

meanwhile the other couples are still on that early phase where they are discovering their boundaries and disagreements are still avoided. but percabeth didn’t even go through that phase, because they already knew each other well enough.

at most, the only thing that changed is that their bickering no longer become fights where they storm out because they can’t properly express their feelings.

I can't remember how much of this is implied canon or my own interpretation, but I fully believed that Chiron recognized Percy was a son of Poseidon from the fountain incident with Nancy Bobofit, knew that a child of the Big Three being claimed would be a total shit show, and simply chose not to say a word about it

Chiron was already aware about the fight between Poseidon and Zeus over the bolt being stolen. He also knew that Percy was innocent and telling someone about it would only put him in danger. Even bringing him to camp would eventually reveal the truth (like it did once he was there), which probably explains why he didn’t immediately took Percy there after Mrs. Dodd attacked him.

But imagine the moment he realized it though. Yeah there was something big awaiting this kid when he turned 16 that would affect all of them but there was also something big happening RIGHT NOW and the simple fact that this kid exists could make matters so much worse.

yeah anyways the first time I read Heroes of Olympus I thought all demigods needed a weapon and I was confused that Leo didn’t have one during TLH, besides his tool belt. I was convinced he was going to show up in MoA with something like a magical celestial bronze hammer that would grow in size when he needed to kill a monster.

I was going to write something about how fucked up it is that Piper eventually saw both her best friends die, even though one of them returned. I was going to write about how heartbreaking it is to read TLH knowing what we know now. I was going to make a comparison about how this would be equivalent of Annabeth seeing Percy and Grover die.

And then I realized that she did go through the exact same thing - she saw Thalia die, her best friend who eventually came back, and then she watched Luke die, the man she once loved and continues caring for, both of them sacrificing themselves to give her a better chance.

Heroes of Olympus version where Piper vows on the River Styx that she will never use charmspeak against her friends but later on is forced to in order to save their lives

I 100% agree with the “Percabeth should have been the only couple on the Argo II” take but also here are my inputs (canon compliant ships):

- Frank and Hazel start having a more serious crush during SoN but don’t actually get together yet (which would have driven Percy lowkey insane, except for the fact that he is not that invested in other people’s love life). This actually makes the love triangle way more interesting in MoA, but it actually ends with Leo’s character development rather than from Frazel getting together first. They finally get together in HoH.

- We see Jason and Piper as friends in MoA (instead of just skipping over their development). Piper is finally accepting that maybe they are just supposed to be friends, she thinks she still has feelings but tries to convince herself they are from her fake memories rather than from anything new. Meanwhile Jason has fallen completely in love with her over the past few months but has no idea that she still likes him and he would rather take that to his grave than try something that would ruin their friendship. Piper is also clueless about this, and we as readers only learn about it through Leo’s POV, or maybe even in HoH during the Cupid scene. I like the idea of them getting together during or at the end of BoO, maybe it would have been something that Leo tried to make happen before the final battle because he wanted to see his best friends together and happy before sacrificing himself (and yeah I how how this ship ended up, like I said I’m going with canon and how I would’ve rather seen it go during HoO).

Annabeth is able to see all these crushes from day 1 basically and tells Percy about it, but they are way to worried about the quest and each other to actually try and help their friends get together.

also got a question about which 3 by @impostor1491625​ but like i’d preferably change the seven around and have a change in the plot BUT imagine this - leo and piper having been in kronos’ army like think of it guys, a powerful charmspeaker and fire user which would make the fight between demigods in the last olympian SO intense and make it even more awkward on board after (before it was roman v greek but roman v greek v kronos’ army members?? AWKWARD)

and the guilt around beckendorf and silena’s death?? piper and leo having loved their older siblings and feeling so guilty about their deaths but at the same time still being SO DAMN ANGRY

drew v piper would have been so much more interesting like, drew is still sad about silena’s death but lashes out at everyone angrily especially piper because she defected and she blames it all on piper and piper’s feeling guilty about it too but at the time she won’t allow herself to be bullied so they’re just butting heads

and then piper’s guilt magnified even further when her father gets kidnapped because she’s betraying her friends again but AGAIN it’s a reasonable reason because it’s a valid goddamn reason

jason hearing about the fact that both of them had been on kronos’ army because chb is a bunch of gossips and having to deal with the moral quandary that he likes his friends but at the same time he’s super morals-orientated (unlike percy who stands by his friends regardless of what) and just trying to wrap his head around it while getting his memories together

and LEO, poor leo, who is still sad about his mother’s death, who uses humour to cope with his issues, but at the same time is just angry all the time - and still is, and everyone was already suspicious of them but also extra cautious around him because of his fire powers and just just imagine guys

ok I love this because Kronos had promised his allied demigods a better future for them, and regardless of whether he meant to keep this promise or not, his demigods believed in him.

now Gaea didn’t play on the demigods’ resentment against their godly parents, she would play against them on their insecurities, and she would do so trying to disarm them rather than convincing them to join her. it’s pretty clear that there are no demigods in her future. which is really interesting from those Kronos Army demigods’ pov, because they had fought for what they thought was the best option for fellow demigods (whether they actually believed in Kronos’ cause or were brainwashed - it would be very interesting to have both examples present). now, whether they like it or not, the best option for demigods is fighting alongside the gods. the thought of using demigod blood in a sacrificial ritual would disgust them. there wouldn’t really be a doubt about fighting Gaea. but at first they WOULD be weirded out about fighting alongside demigods who one year before had different values. but imagine them figuring out that Percy + co. we’re also fighting for what they thought was the best option for them, and they also resent the gods, and they aren’t so different after all.

now, imagine Leo, who had joined Kronos because, just like Luke, he had blamed his father for failing to protect his mom and himself. imagine that Leo discovering that actually, Gaea was the one who killed his mom, which leads him to question everything. imagine his first contact with Frank and Hazel, loyal Romans, and the first thing he does is shooting their camp (and Gaea picked him because she knew the others would distrust him). imagine Hazel, who had died to defeat a giant previously, having to work with Sammy’s great grandkid, and wondering how he could be so similar and yet so different.

and then there’s Piper, with her charmspeak, which also sparks distrust from fellow campers.

I like to believe that, in this scenario, Percy and Annabeth would be the firsts to give them a second chance (specially Percy, since he was the one who asked for their forgiveness). but there would be a moment when one of them reaches for their weapon, which doesn’t go unnoticed.

there’s A LOT of work to be done.
