The Cancellation of Socrates - Jacques Louis David, 1787
have you pregnant
no but i keep trying
this is what happens when they close yahoo answers, all the questions have to go somewhere
reproductive rights issues:
abortion
birth control
also reproductive rights issues:
doctors performing c sections during births without informed consent
eugenics via sterilization requirements for trans people to change documentation
eugenics via forced/nonconsenting sterilization of disabled people
eugenics via forced/nonconsenting sterilization of people of color
eugenics via selective abortion of disabled fetuses (fetuses with Down syndrome especially) (these are abortions sought by people who WANT to be pregnant–but only with non-disabled children, when there’s absolutely no guarantee that a non-disabled child won’t become disabled)
if your reproductive rights activism doesn’t incorporate ALL OF THE ABOVE, i want no part of it.
also
- doctors deliberately stitching their female patients genitals tighter than necessary / than is safe to “make sex more enjoyable for their spouse”
- doctors refusing to perform sterilization on people because “they’ll change their minds and want children down the road”
THIS THIS THIS
Selective abortion isn’t eugenics this is a really complicated issue that should be left to a woman and her medical professional. Selective abortion occurs for many reasons (the couple doesn’t have the time to care for a disabled child or the money to care for a disabled child, the couple knows they don’t have the patience of personality type that would suit raising a disabled child, the couple already has a special needs child and cannot handle more than one and countless others. When you say you are pro choice that include the choice to ALL women for ANY reason no questions asked. Knowing that you are not capable or willing to care for a disabled child and thus refusing to bring a person you cannot care for into the world is a brave and responsible thing to do. Would you rather force a woman to give birth to a child she cannot care for and have it be surrendered to the state?
Honestly the argument of “eugenics” in this case shames women who got abortions and attempts to characterize them as evil and selfish. Just like the pro life movement. As a medical professional who has been involved in this decision process I assure you it is heartbreaking and difficult. Shrouding it in shame and cruelty only makes it worse.
RIP to one of the stupidest publicity stunts of the modern era
They claimed it was to promote the culinary school scholarships they were giving to two women but then they spent over 4x the amount of the scholarships on advertising for the scholarships.
Sounds like they were hoping to get Cancelled in a big way, in a No Publicity Is Bad Publicity kinda move

Despite every moment of life being indescribably precious and a wondrous mystery, I will spend it caring about dividends and how many rental properties I have.
Rich people are truly dead inside.
There’s a line there that kinda sticks out at me:
“The plan was to grow our money so we could feel financially secure enough to have a baby.”
This is a couple that’s already worth three million dollars. They own their own home. They have a passive monthly income of $12.5k without lifting a single finger, and he can make $30k/mo working for 60 hours. To put that in normal 40-hour weeks, this means that he works until mid-May, takes the rest of the year off, and makes five hundred and sixty thousand dollars for his trouble, on top of the three million they already have and any income she might have.
tl;dr: That’s a lot of fucking money for very little effort.
And these people are scared. They think that thisisn’t enough money for them to raise a child
Capitalism will always keep you feeling hungry and desperate and on the edge of collapse. It runs on people feeling that way, and it will never let you go no matter how loyally you serve it.
i would rather die than market myself on linkedin. it's the modern day version of a peasant doing a little dance to convince the king to let him live

clairewillett: the unearned guilt fans put themselves through in the “separating art from artist” conversation makes me so sad // the problem isn’t that Buffy meant something to you; it’s how your love was used, by both Whedon & the system enabling him, to ensure he kept getting free passes. (12 Feb. 21)
jonrog1: Excellent point, not to mention TV shows and movies are *collaborative endeavors*. There are a shitload of other people’s words, camera setups, and performance choices you have a relationship with, not just one person’s vision. Don’t let someone retroactively cancel your joy. (12 Feb. 21)
jonrog1: Despite the argument of several showrunners, auteur theory, at least in television, is very hard to justify and when it is, often leaves a nightmare trail of damage behind it. (12 Feb. 21)
jonrog1: I have absolutely, positively failed other people during my career, and I would hate for you to stop loving characters ands stories other people put their heart and soul into because of one asshole, even if that asshole is me. (12 Feb. 21)
jonrog1: We could do a hundred tweet thread about everything I’ve ever done that people (sometimes inexplicably) love where I point out how that thing you love was the result of someone else’s choice. (12 Feb. 21)
I remember reading some time ago an article written around the topic of “Can you continue to enjoy art after coming to realize that the artist behind its creation is problematic?” It was a fairly long and in-depth piece, quoting from interviews done with a number of prominent critics, and the only conclusion it came to in the end was “Well, I don’t know. That depends on you. Can you?”
It’s a complicated and multi-part question, and the answer varies depending on which part of the question you focus on: Can I continue to buy the art or otherwise financially support the artist? Can I keep, physically or digitally, copies of this art that I have? Can I share it and interact with others on it? Can I continue to let it matter to me? Can I continue to love it?
An artist, or an author, pretty quickly learns a couple of things about making art. The first is that, as John Rogers says here, there is almost no art that is solely the province – legally, financially, or morally – of one single artist, and that becomes truer and truer the more complicated the art form gets. It is a pretty solid guarantee that in any given movie or video game or comic book someone involved in the making of it, someone who received remuneration from its development, is going to be a pretty shitty person for one reason or another – whether it’s the person who gets a lot of high-profile publicity or not. Searching for art that has never been touched by tainted hands is, in this world, going to be a pretty lonely endeavor. There is no ethical consumption of art under capitalism; whether you are personally touched by feeling of unease or unhappiness to think of your money going to support, say, OSC, is an entirely inward and personal feeling and nobody else is really in a position to give you shit for such things.
The other thing an artist learns pretty quickly on is that the art that exists in the head of your audience is not the same art that existed in the artist’s head when they made it. A good artist comes to accept that early. A bad one may expend considerable effort and cause a lot of grief attempting to control their audience’s interpretation – but won’t ultimately get any further towards making it so.
I’ve said, many times over, that you cannot know what other people are taking away from a piece of art. It is many times something completely to the left of whatever you took away from the art. Sometimes it can seem entirely converse to the purpose of the artist – I remember not too long ago reading an essay by a POC about finding things deeply meaningful to them in the works of Lovecraft, an author infamous for his disgust towards POC. But the themes of addiction and heritance in his work still spoke to them – why should they deny themselves an experience of art that helped them, just because of the failings of the author?
The experience of art is not only idiosyncratic to each person, it’s unique to the person you were at the time and place you experienced the art. Just for example, a story about a woman going through a bad breakup may speak to you entirely differently at a time that you are struggling in a relationship yourself, than when you re-read it five years later while peacefully single and lonely.
The context of the art changes as you find out more about it, and the context of you changes, too. There can be a hundred reasons why a piece of art that once helped you isn’t helpful any more, whether because the context changed or because you did. To borrow a Marie Kondo concept, if this art no longer sparks joy for you, then let it go. Grieve it if you feel the need, but don’t let it weigh you down. And contrarily, if the art does still bring you joy, then you don’t need to excuse yourself to anyone or anything for that.
At the end of the day, the only reason to be aware of other people’s expectation of art is so that you don’t let your own interactions with the art barge all over other people’s space – but you should perhaps not be doing that anyway? Being mindful of not being cruel or intrusive towards other people is something that is a constant practice, really, not only when a controversy is trending.
But in the end, every interaction between art and audience is unique and idiosyncratic. The author’s motives, good or bad, are a twinkling distant consideration. Don’t let your experience of art be controlled by expectations – anyone else’s or your own.

americans make jokes like “it’s chewsday innit” and “lol beans on toast” and the british retaliate with “go get shot in a school shooting and die from inaccessible health care” and the cycle repeats like every two months
Americans joking about Britain: harmless jokes, haha funny memes about British slang and light jabs about the Revolutionary War
Britains joking about America: Why don’t you go fucking die from things that you have no control over
Indians joking about Britain: jabs about stealing the Kohinoor diamond, being stiff and stuck up 24/7, roasting the royal family for eating taxpayers money to smile and wave.
British joking about India: We once ruled over you!! You should have stayed with us and maybe THEN you’d be good for something!!
It’s important to know that hijab is banned in schools in most of the european countries, such as france, belgium, switzerland etc. Millions of girls have to take their hijab off everyday in order to have access to education, and I am one of them. Please spread this as much as possible, it has become so normal here that I feel like a fool for even mentioning it, but I’m pretty sure it goes against the human rights. This senseless law has been on since 2004 and pretends that all the students have to be “equal” and it is prohibited to show that you belong to any religion, any religious sign must be set aside. However, most of us have to take our hijab off in schools where you can clearly see a christmas tree or a christian cross. “Yeah but it’s not the same”, they say. Tell me about double standards. I pray for days when we don’t have to chose between religion and education.
FUCKING PREACH
