I like to think that at least once, the Avatar cycle seemed to skip the Water Tribeâlike people knew it was the water tribeâs turn, everyone was looking for them, the tests are done on all the kids, but like 60-80 years go by and no avatar until some Earth Kingdom kid shows up. People wonder if the cycle skipped a generation or what, but nothing serious was going on at that time so they shrug and move on.
Itâs only many many years later that someone is researching Swampbender oral history and someone tells the story of âOl Stinky Jess, she was a funny one, could light the swamp on fire anâ all sorts oâ shenanigans! Best catfishgator catcher in the tribe, she wasâ and thats literally it, she just lived a totally chill life in the swamp and nobody knew what an avatar was at the time so they just rolled with that funny galâs odd bending ways.

Yes but see, according to the Wiki the Swamp Tribe has been there for thousands of years, so whoâs to say there havenât been at least two Swamp Tribe avatars? You get Stinky Jess, who just shenaniganâd about in the swamp and lived her best life as the local cryptid/Maui-type folk hero, and then a few centuries later you get Muddy Joe, who rides into battle on a wave of muddy swamp water and everyone respects him but also begs him to wear some real pants.

just remembered a fic on AO3 (or more likely LJ because it had that distinct 00's experimental vibe) that appeared double-spaced oddly, in that some paragraphs would be spaced normally and others would have double or even triple spaces in between. it was about one half of the otp getting over the other's death (or coma, can't remember which), so all the comments were about how poignant the use of visual spacing was as a means to convey all the emotional holes in the character's life.
and then the author replied like... *giggle* guys it's NOT double spaced. try selecting the whole text
and we were all like "no WAY"
but we selected the text, and yes!!!
the "holes" in the story? they were actually lines and actions from the dead/coma character's ghost, rendered invisible to the eye by the simple trick of coloring the text the exact same as the background, revealed by nothing more than a click and a drag of the mouse
a story about the profound loneliness of losing your the partner of your life and having to make do without them, without anything to fill the holes they'd left behind, suddenly became a story about the profound helplessness of seeing someone you love suffer from your absence while you are right there, unable to do anything about it, unable to communicate that you love them enough to suffer unseen and unheard with them, just to keep them company they'll never know about
it was then that I truly realized how *superior* the digital medium is to plain printed paper, how the medium and the format can add to a story.
I think about that fic about once a year. I wish I could find it again

Fic rec time! Not a poignant meditation on loss; this one is just straight up fun! But nobody explores the bounds of the medium that is AO3 better than @gogglor (especially in the later chapters of this particular fic)!

BOOK: Lord of the Rings
REASON FOR BAN: Contained magic and was therefore Satanic
CONTEXT: Tolkien was a devout Catholic who explicitly wrote LOTR to be a metaphorical exploration of his faith. He said it was the reason why no one in the books worships anyone; they themselves are meant to be the religious text. Did that stop a mob of evangelicals from burning a pile of LOTR books in the 70âs? Lol of course not.
BOOK: The Lorax
REASON FOR BAN: Contained a biased condemnation of the logging industry.
CONTEXT: This one happened in a Pacific Northwest town with a big population of lumber industry professionals. Which is exactly the place where a book like this SHOULD be, but HEAVEN FORBID we let children THINK.
BOOK: Websterâs Dictionary
REASON FOR BAN: Someone was concerned a hypothetical child could look up the word âsexâ in it.
CONTEXT: This was in 2007 (!!??!!)
BOOK: Goosbumpsâs The Barking Dog
REASON FOR BAN: Contained a scary depiction of a dog.
CONTEXT: Do I really need to give more context on this one?
One of these days Iâll get into the art bans we dealt with, and the spectacularly terrible interpretations of the first amendment that people used to justify censorship, but for now Iâll just add that these examples didnât all happen in the American South. Censorship happens everywhere, just with different justifications. Keep a sharp eye, an open mind, and an examined set of principles.
