Do you believe in love? / I am a soldier / I don’t believe in anything
Is it that time of year?
Still no fish bag news, but I have now finished uni! These are the things I made! They are The Bear and Rose from my beloved Ghost Quartet
Maryland Hatsune Miku + Baltimore and Annapolis edition
i lied. put your clothes back on. we're watching all of Dave Malloy's Ghost Quartet (2014) and then spending the next 8 hours analyzing its themes and characters
its a relatively minor detail but i really appreciate that in gq rose didn't fall out with the astronomer for no reason or vague reasons but because he stole her work. thinking abt how many women had their work stolen by men, particularly husbands? and its such an invasive and hurtful thing to do, to take the poems she wrote out of love for him and claim them as his own.
obviously "maul the astronomer and turn my sister into a crow and lock them both in a cage until the crow starts to starve and she has no choice but to peck out the eyes of her lover and eat them" is a pretty intense reaction to your sister getting with your ex (crush? boyfriend?) who stole your work. but i like how none of the characters in gq are straightforwardly innocent or heartless or straightforwardly anything. but sisters / daughters / brothers / husbands / mothers / fathers / ghosts
#ghost quartet#never take the stars away from me
fuckkkk i forgot about never take the stars away from me. fucking heartwrenching!!!!!!
obv ghost quartet is not a story super focused on giving detailed lore of its characters but yeah. the telescope as a whole song rlly shifts/deepens how you understand rose's poetry. similarly i would argue to how the whole musical starts from the camera shop scene where we get a simple retelling of the entire rose red / pearl white saga, only for the musical itself to slowly go so much more into detail about what happened.
its not even just that rose wrote the poems as a gift for the astronomer. she sees things in the stars. she's genuinely affected by the world and its beauty and its pain. "i love the way you see the world / i love the way your soul sings / i wish that i could sing like you / i wish that i could feels things / never take the stars away from me" and then he does. and then her sister loves him more than her.
and then danyazade dies. scheherazade is left with the shah with no stardust left and they are both miserable and full of regret. and the starchild is a ghost in the eyes of her god, staring up at the stars and wondering about the man a million lightyears away whose already turned to dust. and roxie is asking her mama to read her arabian nights, and lady usher sings about the little moons, little candles, little snowflakes, little glows, little bits of stardust. and her mother wasn't very nice.
maybe im just too lose in the gq sauce but actually drives me crazy how we know so little about these characters lives in any real detailed way yet there is a never ending amount of analysis i feel i can do on them that makes me want to cry and scream and wail. dave malloy let me kiss you with tongue under the moonlight.
This phrase has already entered my vocabulary re: media criticism where like. The viewer has a concrete view of what they expect a story to be based on the tropes and cliches they're used to seeing together, and when that doesn't happen, they judge it as a failed depiction of what they assumed it was going to be instead of judging it as what it actually is.
"This show is problematic because the hero didn't kill the villain at the end": When does he steal the bread?
"These two characters who were close friends throughout the series don't kiss at the end! What the fuck?": When does he steal the bread?
"This feels like it's missing a conclusion! Like, the protagonist does bad stuff and because of a critical decision he makes as a result of his major character flaws, meets tragedy in the end! Where's the part where he learns better and brings is love back from the dead and becomes a good guy and gets a happy ending?": When does he steal the fucking bread??
I heard this out as "When criticizing something, you must judge it for what it is, not what it isn't"
#this is why so many of us urge people to get a wider diet of stories

the number 1 rule of fanfic is have fun and be yourself. the number 2 rule is the average healthy adult male can lose roughly 2 liters of blood before dying.

they say you can't pour from an empty cup but i've been doing it my whole life and aside from all of these mysterious ailments it's working out great for me

I asked my five year old cousin what he would do if there was a scary skeleton and he said "I would pour water on it and then kick it" and I've been losing my shit laughing crying about a wet skeleton for about fifteen minutes straight
he was so delighted by my fits of giggles that he drew eight wet skeletons for me
