Hey if you like Spirk, Sense8, Vulcan telepathy shenanigans and Spock and Jim being so not normal about each other PLEASE check out With Golden String by Boxofrogs! He writes them so tenderly and beautifully it’s a great read & he just updated with a new chapter!
Spock will get overwhelmed by the loud noises at the parade and will have to be escorted to a nearby park to relax, Kirk did not pack sunscreen and she *will* burn to a crisp. Gave Spock the intersex and lesbian flags obvi, Kirk got Bi and Butch.
Creatures of the Bajoran countryside, as featured in Rainmongegers. (ao3 link). Descriptions under cut.
Despite its name and appearance, the Long Crane is actually closer to a mammal, as it gives live birth and breastfeeds its young. These animals, reaching in their adult sizes up to 1.20 meters are often described in Bajoran folklore as tricksters and friendly spirits -- unless wronged. A displeased long crane was told to be able to pull fowl and children underwater to drown them, set fire to wooden houses by stealing burning branches from settlements, and even claw people's eyes out. On the other hand, having a friendly long crane was said to bring prosperity and the Prophets' good will.
2. A juvenile long crane is fat, helpless and often left alone for hours. This would make them a perfect food source. However, cultural taboo forbids Bajorans from killing baby long cranes, even in times of hunger, as harming one of them was the sure way to make an adult long crane angry. Oddly enough, Cardassians stationed in areas populated by long cranes abstained from killing juveniles as well, perhaps because of their uncanny similarity to a juvenile Cardassian, both in appearance and tone of voice.
3. The desire to breed these fish for meat has led the Cardassians to flood almost the entire Litar region with water. The farming operation was quickly abandoned, but the fish have adapted very well, quickly destroying most of the native ecosystem.
4. The igj'ira grain is home to many small wasps and beetles, who nest inside of its heads. Instead of repelling them with pesticides, Bajorans harvest the heads of grain with the insects still inside them, and process them into flour. As a result, Bajoran "bread", vasu zhian, has a very high protein content and is not suitable for vegetarians.
5. One of the species of mosquito inhabiting the Litar region. Also commonly eaten.
6. A swamp frog. It has nothing to hide.
7. . One of the only native species of fish still surviving in the areas affected by Cardassian climate engineering. Named somehow inaccurately, as its one "eye", located in the same entrance as its mouth, is actually a multi-sensory organ, the exact workings of which are still not known.
ziyal survives the war -> is unofficially adopted by both garak and kira separately (Very Separately.) -> asks to spend time on cardassia during the reconstruction -> kira comes along because it’s a disaster out there and she’s not letting ziyal go by herself -> comedy of errors where kira keeps getting mistaken for garak’s quite young wife (but what a lovely daughter you have together! she looks so much like you! divorced, you say? what a shame…) -> kira’s head explodes. the end
they made a star trek movie last year just last year and you may notice that nopony on earth gave a fuck about that fact at all or even noticed that it happened or reacted in any way. worlds first impactless media
Star trek is kind of beautiful as the founding yaoi fathers because tos is pretty much just what you'd imagine. Yknow, suspiciously gay shit happening every 3 seconds, there's women they're involved with but the only permanent bond is with eachother, decent amount of angst, etc. Sort of a will-they-won't-they tease, except obviously they won't because this is the 60s and we imagine most of this is on accident anyway. Classic fan experience.
But then. 10 years later. The movies start coming out and they're even gayer. And not in the same way the show was, they're just happy. No one ever gets married to a woman, no one dies permanently, they are eachother's number one priority and greatest source of joy and constant companions and they get old together. Imagine. No one else is doing it like this.
#my favorite shore leave theory is that the shore leave factories didn't generate anything for spock not only bc he's sufficiently repressed#but because torn shirt kirk is. right next to him already. honestly shirtless kirk beating up his own old bully while spock watches#is. i think this is spock's kink actually. up there with the 'yes...yes...good...good' voyeuristic reaction to kirk inventing a bazooka#spock watching kirk be righteous and brilliant with as little clothes as possible and spock himself getting to be Correct about everything#is a GREAT day for spock already. who needs wish fulfillment#kirk isn't even interested in the chorus girl sexbots only the simulacrum of his steady gf. & real ruth is out of the picture and no threat#also they got to grab each other multiple times it was basically obscene. AND all this started when kirk only wanted a massage from him.#so 'shore leave' in its entirety is pretty much 10/10 no notes ideal day as far as spock's psyche is concerned w/ no need for extra steps @anghraine tags
“Uhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote “Upenda” - which means “peace” in Swahili, I understand — not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was “Uhura” her first name or her last name? Gene said, “Well, Nichelle and I never decided.” We always leaned towards it being her last name because it’s taken from the Swahili “uhuru” which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as “Freeman.” So he said, “You can make it her last name.” The writer said, “What about her first name? I’ve come up with one in Swahili. It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I like that.” — NICHELLE NICHOLS
